એકસમયે શ્રીહરિ ગામ ભચાઉમાં હરિભકત શાહ વાઘાને ઘેર ઉતર્યા. એમના ઘરે ભાવથી બનાવેલ થાળ જમીને ત્યાંથી ઘણાક મુમુક્ષુ જીવોનું કલ્યાણ કરવા સારુ દરબારમાં પધાર્યા હતા. ગામમાં સારા મુમુક્ષું માણસો હતા તેમણે એમ કહ્યું જે, ‘આ સ્વામિનારાયણ જે જીવન્મુક્ત કહેવાય છે એ હાલ દરબારમાં ઉતર્યા છે તે આપણે સર્વે ચાલો વાતો સાંભળીએ ને એને પ્રશ્ન પૂછીએ, એ ભગવાન કહેવાય છે તે કાંઇક પરચો પણ માંગશું. તે જો ભગવાન હશે તો જણાશે. વળી આપણા ગામમાં ફકીર બહુ ડાહ્યો છે તેને સાથે લઇએ.’ પછી તે ફકીરને લઇને સહું માણસો ભેળા થઇને દરબારમાં ગયા. તે સર્વે જણ નાળિયેર લઇને શ્રીહરિની આગળ ભેટ મૂકી પગે લાગીને સન્મુખ બેઠાં. ગામના પટેલ ખીમાએ શ્રીજીમહારાજને કહ્યું જે, હે મહારાજ ! આ અમે સર્વે વાતું સાંભળવા આવ્યા છીએ તો વાતું કરો. ત્યારે શ્રીજીમહારાજે મયારામ ભટ્ટને કહ્યું જે, વાતો કરો. ત્યારે તેમણે કહ્યું જે, ભટ્ટની વાતું તો અમે આખી ઉંમર સાંભળી છે. અને અમો તો મહારાજની વાતું સાંભળવા આવ્યા છીએ. તે તમે વાતું કરો. પછી શ્રીજીમહારાજે ભગવાન ભજવાની વાતો બહુ પ્રકારે કરી અને સહુને ઉપદેશ દીધો. પછી તે લોકોએ કહ્યું જે, હે મહારાજ ! તમે સમાધિ કરાવો છો તે અમે બીજા પાસે સાંભળીને સમાધી જોવા આવ્યા છીએ. તો અમને સમાધિ કરાવો. તે સુણીને નિર્લોભાનંદ સ્વામી જે (જેરામ ભક્ત) તે દિવસે ધોળે લુગડે ઘેર હતા, તેને મહારાજે કહ્યું જે, “જેરામભકત, તમે એકાંતે બેસીને ધ્યાન કરો તો સમાધિ થાય.” તે એકાંતે જઇને ધ્યાન કરવા બેઠા. થોડીવારે તેને શ્રીજીમહારાજે પૂછ્યું જે, તમે ધ્યાનમાં શું દીઠું ? ત્યારે તે જેરામભક્તે કહ્યું જે, બે બાઇઓ વઢતી હતી. તેમાં મારું મન ગયું હતું. તે માટે મેં તો કાંઇ દીઠું નથી. ત્યારે શ્રીહરિ હસ્યા અને કહ્યું જે, ‘તમે તો ખીચડીને કાંકરા ભેળા કરીને જમો છો. તે ખીચડીનો સ્વાદ ક્યાંથી આવે ?’ ત્યારે જેરામભક્તે કહ્યું જે, “હે મહારાજ ! તમે તો ઇશ્વર ના ઇશ્વર છો. તે તમારી પાસે ખીચડીને કાંકરા જુદા કરવા સારુ આવ્યા છીએ તો તે જેમ જુદા થાય તેવી રીતે બતાવો.” ત્યારે મહારાજે કહ્યું જે, તમારે કયા દેવની ઉપાસના છે ? ત્યારે ભક્તે કહ્યું જે, અમારે તો પ્રભુ રામચંદ્રજીની ઉપાસના છે. ત્યારે મહારાજે કહ્યું જે, રામચંદ્રજીની મૂર્તિ ક્યાંય જોઇ છે ? લ્યો અમે તમને રામચંદ્રજી બતાવીએ. તે આવા હતા. તે મૂર્તિનું ધ્યાન કરવું.
એમ કહીને શ્રીજીમહારાજે પોતાનાં સર્વે અંગ બતાવ્યાં. તેમાં પ્રથમ તો ચરણારવિંદ સોળે ચિહ્ન સહિત દેખાડ્યાં. જે પ્રભુ રામચંદ્રજીનાં ચરણારવિંદ સોળે ચિહ્ન ઉર્ધ્વરેખાઓ સહિત આવાં જ હતાં. તે જુઓ, પિંડીને ઢીંચણ ને સાથળ તે પણ આવી જ હતી. ને પેટ, છાતી, તે પણ આવી ને આવી જ હતી. ને મુખારવિંદ ને નેત્ર ને નાસિકા, મસ્તક તે પણ આવાં ને આવાં જ હતાં. ને રામચંદ્રજીનું સ્વરૂપ પણ આવું જ હતું. તે અંગ ધારીને ધ્યાન કરવું. તે વાત સાંભળીને ભક્તે કહ્યું જે, હે મહારાજ ! જેવી રીતે તમે ધ્યાન કરવાનું કહ્યું તેવી રીતે ધ્યાન કરનારાને એ સુગમ માર્ગ છે. એમ કહીને પગે લાગીને ઊઠ્યા. એ વખતે ગામનો ફકીર જે ભેળો આવ્યો હતો તેને ગામજનોએ પૂછ્યું જે, તમે શું નિર્ધાર કર્યો ? ત્યારે તે ફકીરે કહ્યું જે, હું અમારા પીર, ફકીર ને ઓલીયા તેને દર્શને જ્યારે જાઉં ત્યારે મારી લાકડીને લગારેક પૃથ્વી ઉપર પછાડું તો જેમ બંદુકનો ભડાકો થાય તેમ ભડાકો થાય છે. અને ‘સ્વામિનારાયણ’ આગળ તો મેં ત્રણ વાર લાકડી પછાડી તો પણ લગારેય બોલી નહિ. તે ‘સ્વામિનારાયણ’ તો હિંદુ છે ને તમે પણ હિંદુ છો. માટે તમે ગમે તો માનો અથવા ન માનો પણ મારી લાકડી ‘સ્વામિનારાયણ’ આગળ બંધ થઇ ગઇ, તે જોઇને મને અતિ આશ્ચર્ય લાગ્યું. માટે મને અલ્લા બોલાવે છે જે, ‘સ્વામિનારાયણ’ તો નિશ્ચે ખુદા છે. તે મને તો પરચો આપ્યો. થોડીવારે તે સર્વે મનુષ્ય પગે લાગીને ઘેર ગય, ત્યારે શ્રીહરિએ અખંડાનંદ સ્વામીને બોલાવીને કહ્યું જે, ‘આ ગામમાં મુમુક્ષુ ઘણા છે અને સત્સંગ થાય એવું છે. તે માટે તમે દશ દિવસ અહીં રહીને સર્વને વાતું કરો. અમારે ભુજ જાવું છે તે આજ ચાલશું.’ એમ કહીને શ્રીજીમહારાજ ચાલ્યા ને અખંડાનંદ સ્વામી ભચાઉ ત્યાં રહ્યા. ને જે મનુષ્ય મહારાજને દર્શને આવ્યા હતા ને પ્રશ્ન પૂખ્યા હતા અને સમાધિ કરાવ્યાનું કહ્યું હતું, તે સર્વે સ્વામી પાસે સત્સંગી થયા.
અખંડાનંદ સ્વામીને તે સત્સંગીઓએ કહ્યું જે, “શ્રીજીમહારાજે અમારા ઉપર દયા કરીને અમને કહ્યું જે, રામચંદ્રજીનું સ્વરૂપ આવું હતું. એમ કહીને પોતાનાં ચરણારવિંદ સોળ ચિહ્ન સહિત દેખાડ્યાં ને પિંડી, ઢીંચણ, સાથળ, ઉદર, છાતી, મસ્તક, નાસિકા, કાન ને નેત્ર એ સર્વે અંગો બતાવ્યાં, પણ અમને એ વાત સમજ્યામાં ન આવી. અને જ્યારે તમારી વાતો સાંભળીને સત્સંગ કર્યો ત્યારે એ વાત હવે અમને સમજ્યામાં આવી. પ્રભું રામચંદ્રજી તથા શ્રીકૃષ્ણાદિક અવતારના ધરનારા શ્રીજી મહારાજ છે, તે અમારા ઉપર કૃપા કરીને તમને અહીં મૂકી ગયા. તે તમે અમને કાળના મુખમાંથી કાઢ્યા. નહિ તો સંસાર સમુદ્રરૂપ પ્રવાહમાં ક્યાંય તણાઇ જાત, ને અમે અમારો આ મનુષ્યનો દેહ કેવળ વૃથા ખોઇ નાખત ને યમનો માર ખાઇને મરી જાત. લખ ચોરાસીમાં ફરતાં પાર ન આવત. માટે શ્રીજીમહારાજે અમારી ઉપર બહુ જ કૃપા કરીને સત્સંગ કરાવ્યો. હવે તો કલ્યાણનો નિશ્ચય થયો. જે અમારું કલ્યાણ થયું તે સર્વ પ્રતાપ શ્રીજીમહારાજનો છે.”

भचाऊ का फ़कीर और रामचंद्रजी का स्वरूप
एक समय श्रीहरि कच्छ के भचाऊ गाँव में हरिभक्त शाह वाघा के घर पधारे। उनके घर भावपूर्वक निर्मित थाल आरोगने के पश्चात, महाराज अनेक मुमुक्षु जीवों के कल्याण हेतु वहाँ के दरबार में पधारे।
गाँव के कुछ विचारशील मुमुक्षुओं ने आपस में कहा, “यह स्वामिनारायण जिन्हें जीवनमुक्त कहा जाता है, वे इस समय दरबार में ठहरे हैं; चलिए हम सब चलकर उनके आध्यात्मिक वचन सुनें, उनसे प्रश्न पूछें। वे भगवान कहलाते हैं, तो हम कोई चमत्कार (परचा) भी माँगेंगे। यदि वे वास्तव में भगवान होंगे, तो प्रत्यक्ष प्रकट हो जाएगा। और हमारे गाँव का फ़कीर बहुत समझदार है, उसे भी अपने साथ ले चलें।”
वे सभी उस फ़कीर को साथ लेकर दरबार में पहुँचे। सभी ने श्रीहरि के सम्मुख नारियल की भेंट अर्पित की, चरण स्पर्श किए और सम्मुख बैठ गए। गाँव के पटेल खीमा ने श्रीजी महाराज से प्रार्थना की, “हे महाराज! हम सब आध्यात्मिक वार्ता सुनने आए हैं, कृपा कर उपदेश दीजिए।”
श्रीजी महाराज ने मयाराम भट्ट से कहा, “भट्टजी! आप कथा-वार्ता कीजिए।”
तब ग्रामीणों ने कहा, “भट्टजी की बातें तो हमने जीवनभर सुनी हैं; हम तो विशेष रूप से महाराज के मुखारविंद से ज्ञान सुनने आए हैं, अतः आप ही वार्ता कीजिए।”
तत्पश्चात श्रीजी महाराज ने भक्ति, ज्ञान और भगवान के भजन के विविध पक्षों पर अत्यंत मार्मिक उपदेश दिया। इसके बाद लोगों ने कहा, “हे महाराज! आप लोगों को समाधि कराते हैं; हमने दूसरों से सुना है और हम समाधि देखने आए हैं। कृपा कर हमें समाधि कराइए।”
यह सुनकर महाराज ने निर्लोभानंद स्वामी (जो उस समय श्वेत वस्त्रधारी जेराम भक्त के रूप में थे) से कहा, “जेराम भक्त! आप एकांत में बैठकर ध्यान कीजिए, आपको समाधि होगी।”
जेराम भक्त एकांत में ध्यान करने बैठे। थोड़ी देर बाद श्रीजी महाराज ने पूछा, “आपने ध्यान में क्या देखा?”
जेराम भक्त ने सरलता से कहा, “निकट ही दो स्त्रियाँ आपस में झगड़ रही थीं; मेरा मन उनके विवाद में चला गया, अतः मुझे कुछ दिखाई नहीं दिया।”
श्रीहरि हँसकर बोले, “आप तो खिचड़ी में कंकड़ मिलाकर खाते हैं; तो खिचड़ी का दिव्य स्वाद कैसे आए?”
तब जेराम भक्त ने कहा, “हे महाराज! आप तो ईश्वरों के भी परमेश्वर हैं। हम आपके पास खिचड़ी से कंकड़ अलग करवाने ही आए हैं; अब वह उपाय बताइए जिससे वे अलग हो सकें।”
महाराज ने पूछा, “आप किस देव की उपासना करते हैं?”
भक्त ने कहा, “हम प्रभु रामचंद्रजी की उपासना करते हैं।”
महाराज ने पूछा, “क्या आपने रामचंद्रजी का स्वरूप कहीं देखा है? आइए, हम आपको रामचंद्रजी का स्वरूप दिखाते हैं; वे बिल्कुल ऐसे थे; इस स्वरूप का ध्यान कीजिए।”
ऐसा कहकर श्रीजी महाराज ने अपने समस्त दिव्य अंग दिखाए। सर्वप्रथम महाराज ने सोलह दिव्य चिह्नों और ऊर्ध्वरेखाओं से युक्त अपने चरणारविंद दिखाए कि ‘प्रभु रामचंद्रजी के चरणारविंद सोलह चिह्नों सहित ठीक ऐसे ही थे।’ फिर पिंडलियाँ, घुटने, जाँघें, उदर, विशाल वक्षस्थल, मुखारविंद, नेत्र, नासिका और मस्तक दिखाते हुए कहा कि ‘प्रभु रामचंद्रजी का स्वरूप ठीक ऐसा ही था; इन अंगों को मन में धारण कर ध्यान कीजिए।’
यह दिव्य दर्शन पाकर जेराम भक्त ने कहा, “हे महाराज! जिस प्रकार आपने ध्यान करने की यह सुगम रीति बताई है, उससे ध्यान करना अत्यंत सहज हो गया है।” ऐसा कहकर वे चरण छूकर उठे।
उस समय गाँव के लोगों ने साथ आए फ़कीर से पूछा, “फ़कीर बाबा! आपने क्या अनुभव किया?”
फ़कीर ने विस्मित होकर कहा, “सुनो भाइयो! जब मैं अपने पीर, फ़कीर या औलिया के मजार पर जाता हूँ और अपनी लाठी को जमीन पर हल्का सा भी पटकता हूँ, तो बंदूक की गोली जैसा भयंकर धमाका होता है। परंतु ‘स्वामिनारायण’ के सम्मुख मैंने तीन बार अपनी लाठी को पूरी ताकत से जमीन पर पटका, फिर भी उससे किंचित् मात्र भी ध्वनि नहीं निकली! स्वामिनारायण हिंदू हैं और आप सब भी हिंदू हैं; आप चाहें मानें या न मानें, परंतु मेरी लाठी स्वामिनारायण के आगे बिल्कुल मूक हो गई, यह देखकर मैं अत्यंत चकित हूँ। मेरा अंतरात्मा गवाही दे रहा है कि ‘स्वामिनारायण’ साक्षात् खुदा हैं! मुझे तो प्रत्यक्ष परचा मिल गया है!”
थोड़ी देर बाद सभी लोग नतमस्तक होकर अपने-अपने घर लौटे। तब श्रीहरि ने अखंडानंद स्वामी को बुलाकर कहा, “इस गाँव में अनेक जिज्ञासु मुमुक्षु हैं और यहाँ सत्संग का सुंदर विस्तार हो सकता है। इसलिए आप दस दिन यहीं रुककर सभी को सत्संग कराइए। हमें आज ही भुज प्रस्थान करना है।”
श्रीजी महाराज भुज चले गए और अखंडानंद स्वामी भचाऊ में रुके। जिन लोगों ने महाराज से प्रश्न पूछे थे और समाधि की बात कही थी, वे सभी स्वामी के वचनों से निष्ठावान सत्संगी बन गए।
कालांतर में उन सत्संगियों ने अखंडानंद स्वामी से कहा, “श्रीजी महाराज ने दया करके अपने चरणारविंद और समस्त अंग दिखाकर कहा था कि रामचंद्रजी का स्वरूप ऐसा था, परंतु उस समय हमारी अल्पबुद्धि में वह रहस्य नहीं आया था। अब आपके मुख से सत्संग-कथा सुनकर हमें सत्य का बोध हुआ है कि प्रभु रामचंद्रजी और श्रीकृष्ण आदि समस्त अवतारों के अवतारी स्वयं श्रीजी महाराज ही हैं! वे हम पर असीम कृपा करके आपको यहाँ छोड़ गए थे। आपने हमें काल और यम के मुख से बचा लिया, अन्यथा हम संसार-सागर में बहकर यह अमूल्य मनुष्य देह व्यर्थ गँवा बैठते और चौरासी लाख योनियों में भटकते रहते। आज हमें मोक्ष का पूर्ण निश्चय हो गया है, और यह सब केवल श्रीजी महाराज के परम प्रताप से ही संभव हुआ है।”

The Fakir of Bhachau and the Divine Form of Ramchandraji
Once, Shri Hari graced the village of Bhachau in Kutch and stayed at the residence of devotee Shah Vagha. After partaking of a lovingly prepared thal at his home, Maharaj visited the local Darbar to bestow spiritual liberation upon earnest seekers.
Some thoughtful seekers of the village gathered and discussed among themselves, “This Swaminarayan, who is revered as a Jivanmukta, is currently residing at the Darbar. Let us all go to listen to His spiritual discourses and pose some questions. He is said to be God, so let us also seek a divine miracle (parcho); if He is truly God, it will become evident. Moreover, our village fakir is very wise and experienced; let us take him along.”
Taking the fakir with them, the villagers gathered at the Darbar. Offering coconuts before Shri Hari and bowing reverently, they sat facing Him. Village Patel Khima petitioned, “O Maharaj! We have come to hear spiritual discourse, so please impart divine wisdom to us.”
Shriji Maharaj said to Mayaram Bhatt, “Bhattji, please speak to them.”
The villagers said, “We have listened to Bhattji’s discourses our entire lives; we have come specifically to hear the divine words from Maharaj’s own lips. Therefore, please speak to us Yourself.”
Thereupon, Shriji Maharaj delivered an extensive, sublime discourse elucidating devotion, knowledge, and the paramount importance of worshipping God. Afterwards, the villagers said, “O Maharaj! You induce divine trance (samadhi); we have heard of this from others and have come to witness samadhi firsthand. Please grant us samadhi.”
Hearing this, Maharaj addressed Jeram Bhagat (who later became Sadguru Nirlobhanand Swami, but was then a householder clad in white garments): “Jeram Bhagat, sit in solitude and meditate, and you will enter samadhi.”
Jeram Bhagat sat in a quiet corner to meditate. After a while, Shriji Maharaj asked, “What did you behold in your meditation?”
Jeram Bhagat answered candidly, “Two women were quarreling nearby; my mind drifted toward their dispute, so I saw nothing.”
Shri Hari smiled and remarked, “You are mixing pebbles with khichdi while eating; how then can you relish the sweet taste of khichdi?”
Jeram Bhagat submitted, “O Maharaj! You are the Lord of lords. We have come to You precisely so that You may separate the pebbles from our khichdi; please show us the means by which they may be separated.”
Maharaj asked, “Which deity is the object of your personal worship (upasana)?”
The devotee replied, “We worship Lord Ramchandraji.”
Maharaj asked, “Have you ever seen the murti of Ramchandraji? Behold, We shall show you Lord Ramchandraji; He was exactly like this; meditate upon this form.”
Saying this, Shriji Maharaj revealed all His divine limbs: first displaying His lotus feet adorned with the sixteen sacred emblems and vertical lines (urdhva rekha), saying: “Lord Ramchandraji’s lotus feet, endowed with sixteen marks, were exactly like these. Behold, His calves, knees, and thighs were identical to these; His abdomen and broad chest were identical; and His lotus face, eyes, nose, and head were exactly like these. Lord Ramchandraji’s divine form was identical to this. Enshrine these limbs within your heart and meditate upon them.”
Hearing this, Jeram Bhagat said, “O Maharaj! For those who meditate as You have instructed, this path becomes exceedingly simple,” and he prostrated at His lotus feet.
Meanwhile, the villagers turned to the fakir who had accompanied them and asked, “What have you concluded?”
The fakir replied in sheer astonishment, “Listen, my friends! Whenever I visit our revered Pirs, Fakirs, or Auliyas, if I tap my wooden staff ever so lightly on the ground, it produces a deafening crack like a gunshot! But before ‘Swaminarayan’, I struck my staff three times upon the earth with all my strength, yet it did not emit the slightest sound! Swaminarayan is Hindu and you are Hindu; believe it or not, my staff fell utterly mute before Swaminarayan! Seeing this, I am filled with profound wonder. Allah whispers to my heart: ‘Swaminarayan is truly Khuda (God)!’ He has granted me a direct miracle!”
Shortly thereafter, all the villagers bowed and returned home. Shri Hari then summoned Akhandanand Swami and instructed him, “There are numerous sincere spiritual seekers in this village, and Satsang will flourish here. Therefore, remain here for ten days and impart spiritual wisdom to all. We must proceed to Bhuj today.”
Shriji Maharaj departed for Bhuj, while Akhandanand Swami remained in Bhachau. All those who had questioned Maharaj and requested samadhi embraced Satsang under Swami’s spiritual guidance.
Later, those devotees expressed to Akhandanand Swami, “Out of supreme compassion, Shriji Maharaj revealed His holy feet with sixteen marks and all His divine limbs, telling us that Ramchandraji’s form was like this; but our limited intellect could not grasp the divine secret at that time. Now, listening to your discourses, we have realized the truth: Shriji Maharaj Himself is the Supreme Source of Lord Ramchandraji, Shri Krishna, and all divine incarnations! He mercifully stationed you here, rescuing us from the jaws of Kal and death. Otherwise, we would have drifted helplessly in the worldly ocean, wasted this precious human birth, and suffered endlessly through the cycle of 8.4 million life forms. Today our eternal salvation is assured, and it is entirely by the supreme grace of Shriji Maharaj!”
