Jethurapa of Fachariya and Bhagwan Swaminarayan’s Divine Protection
In the village of Fachariya near Dedan in the Babariyavad region, there lived a devoted Ahir farmer named Jethurapa. He was a prosperous, well-respected farmer of that area and a true refuge for the distressed, ever ready to offer help even in the dead of night. Jethurapa never partook of a meal without first feeding holy sadhus, mendicants, and guests. Through the visits and spiritual guidance of Sadguru Gunatitanand Swami, Krupanand Swami, and Raghavanand Swami, the residents of that region led virtuous, principled lives. Jethurapa possessed unwavering faith in Shri Hari; though he wore simple, coarse garments, his spiritual wisdom was profoundly deep. Constantly turning his mala, he would chant ‘Swaminarayan… Swaminarayan…’ in a resonant voice. He would regularly inspire laborers and farmhands working in his fields to abandon vices and realize the rare value of human birth.
Once, the auspicious occasion arrived for the wedding of his grandson Raja (son of Kandhabhai). Being a respected elder of the community, he invited the entire village and all relatives to join the wedding procession (jaan). After the grand wedding celebrations, the marriage party returned with great joy and festive welcomes. Exhausted from the days of festivities, everyone took their evening meal early and fell into deep slumber, wrapping themselves in whatever quilts they could find.
The days of joyous wedding clamor subsided into absolute quiet, and the entire house lay veiled in the cold winter night. Before retiring to sleep, the visiting women guests had handed all their gold ornaments to Kali-ai, the lady of the house. Kali-ai placed all her own ornaments together with those of the guests into large vessels and locked them inside a heavy wooden chest (pataro). Midnight had passed; far away in the fields, the distant howling of jackals and the gentle humming of crickets broke the silence. A deep, tranquil stillness enveloped the cold winter night.
At that very hour, four Kathi men from the village of Dedan, driven by greed to plunder the wedding jewelry, crept up to the rear mud wall of Jethurapa’s house. With malicious intent, they began digging through the wall to break inside. Soon, an opening was made, but a stream of pearl millet (bajra) poured out; they had struck an earthen grain silo built against the wall! They moved two arm-lengths aside and began boring a second breach. After nearly half an hour of digging, a large opening was created. One of the thieves peered inside through the hole, and his eyes widened in sheer disbelief!
He quickly signaled to his three companions. Looking inside in the flickering glow of a small oil lamp, they beheld two formidable, powerfully built men—fully six cubits tall, with broad chests, long dark moustaches, and noble turbans—sitting peacefully near the wooden chest quietly turning their malas! Seeing this, the four thieves froze. They waited for a while, but realizing their nocturnal venture was foiled, they gathered their tools, slipped away into the outskirts, mounted their tethered horses, and fled into the night.
At dawn, as the ladies of the household awoke to churn butter and grind grain, someone noticed the breaches dug into the rear wall and raised an alarm. News spread through the village like wildfire, and villagers gathered in concern. Jethurapa was bathing and preparing to perform his daily Thakurji puja on the veranda. When informed, he remarked serenely, “As my Maharaj wills! A burglary attempted at my home? Throughout my entire life, I have never transgressed Shriji Maharaj’s Shikshapatri and have always set aside the tenth and twentieth share (tithe) for God. Yet, our accumulated karmas of past lives must be exhausted; whatever has transpired is Hari’s divine will. Go and inspect what has been stolen.” Upon examining the room, they discovered that not a single thread had been taken; all the jewelry inside the chest remained completely untouched!
Everyone exclaimed in unison, “This is the direct divine protection of Bhagwan Swaminarayan! Whoever takes His refuge is personally shielded by Him!”
Just then, two Ahirs came running and said, “Apa, Jai Swaminarayan! Last night, thieves drove off twelve to thirteen buffaloes from our Khajuriya settlement. But just then, two luminous young men dressed in pristine white garments appeared, shook us awake, and alerted us: ‘Someone is stealing your buffaloes!’ At our loud shouts, the thieves abandoned the herd and fled!”
Hearing this, Jethurapa turned his mala in his gaumukhi with tears of devotion streaming down his cheeks: “O Maharaj! How immense is Your divine protection! Forgiving our countless flaws, You vigilantly guard us night and day. O Lord, do we worship You, or do You watch over us?!”
Jethurapa was known throughout Babariyavad for generously supporting anyone in hardship with food and financial assistance. When the relatives of the four thieves learned of their attempt to rob Jethurapa’s home, they sternly reprimanded them: “You ungrateful scoundrels! You spat in the very plate from which you ate! How could you attempt to rob the house of the very soul who supported you in your darkest hours?!” Overcome with remorse, the four Kathis traveled to Fachariya, fell at Jethurapa’s feet, and begged for forgiveness: “Apa! Please forgive us; clouded by evil counsel, we dug a breach into your house. We committed a grave sin by forgetting your benevolence. Please forgive us.”
Moved by their genuine repentance, Jethurapa said, “Brothers, stealing is a violation of God’s holy commands. Never repeat such a sin in your lives; God always provides enough food to nourish this body! But tell me, after digging the hole, why did you leave without taking anything?”
One of them confessed, “Apa, on that night, two armed guards were sitting beside the chest quietly turning their malas, so we fled leaving everything behind.”
Jethurapa replied with profound emotion, “Brothers, we had no guards in our house; but the Master whose humble servants we are—Bhagwan Swaminarayan Himself—became our guardian and stood watch over our home at midnight! If you too take His sincere refuge, He will protect you eternally.”
In this manner, Shri Hari performed a direct divine miracle, safeguarding the home of His staunch devotee Jethurapa and rescuing the cattle of the Rabaris of Khajurines.
