Darbar Devisang of Devaliya: Subdual of Pride, Vision of the Four-Armed Form and Complete Surrender
Darbar Devisang, the chieftain of Devaliya village, was notorious for his fierce temper, arrogant disposition, and deep addictions to opium and bhang. Poisoned by evil associates, he bore intense hostility toward Bhagwan Swaminarayan and His ascetic order, issuing strict orders to sentries to arrest ‘Swaminarayan’ immediately if He ever crossed the town boundary.
One day, as the village assembly gathered, a sentry announced that Swaminarayan had arrived near the village outskirts. Enraged, Devisang twirled his moustache and bellowed: “If Swaminarayan enters Devaliya today, I shall cast Him into chains and obliterate His divinity, or else I am no true Kshatriya!” A sharp-witted court poet (Gadhvi) challenged him before the court: “Darbar, hold your tongue! When terrorizing bandits like Joban Pagi and notorious sinners like Munjo Suru surrendered at His holy feet, what standing do you possess? Why bring disgrace upon yourself?”
Accompanied by Mulji Brahmachari and saints, Shreeji Maharaj approached Devaliya. When Brahmachari expressed concern about awakening a sleeping serpent, Shreehari smiled: “Brahmachariji! If you feel fear, you may stay back; We shall enter alone, for We fear no one!”
As Shreehari reached the village gate, Devisang stormed out with bloodshot eyes, twirling his scorpion-like moustache, shouting fierce threats. At that very instant, Supreme Bhagwan Swaminarayan revealed His transcendental four-armed (Chaturbhuj) divine form! Adorned in glowing pitambar robes and wearing the fragrant vaijayanti garland, He held the divine conch, discus, mace, and lotus, radiating the effulgence of millions of suns!
Blinded by this divine radiance, Devisang’s towering ego collapsed instantly into dust. Trembling from head to toe, he ran and fell prostrate at Shreehari’s lotus feet, sobbing tears of profound repentance! Shreehari gracefully withdrew the cosmic brilliance and spoke with tender compassion: “Darbar Devisang! Because you have taken refuge in Us, We bestow complete fearlessness upon you. Rise up.” Devisang washed the Lord’s sacred feet with his tears, joyfully led Maharaj and the saints to his darbargadh, and served them with utmost reverence. Beholding this miraculous transformation, the court poet proclaimed: “Garav kiyo so nar haryo… Siyaramji! (He who harbors pride is inevitably humbled!)”
