Kariyani: Resolution of the Kazi’s Doubts and Unflinching Conviction of Shreehari as Khuda
Once, Bhagwan Swaminarayan was residing at the royal residence of Vasta Khachar in Kariyani. During an assembly, a devotee faltered in adhering to the prescribed five moral vows (panch-vartman). To uphold the sanctity of dharma, Shreehari disciplined him by dismissing him from the holy congregation. Brokenhearted and weeping bitterly, the devotee departed toward his home.
On the outskirts of Zamrala village stood a Sufi tomb (dargah). Overcome with remorse and separation from Shreehari, the devotee sat near the shrine’s entrance, weeping inconsolably. The resident Kazi observed his sorrow and inquired, “Devotee, why do you shed such agonizing tears?” The devotee replied, “I had gone to Kariyani for the sacred darshan of my worshipful Lord Swaminarayan. However, having breached the holy vows, the Lord has banished me from His presence.” The Kazi declared, “If Swaminarayan is truly Khuda (God Almighty), Khuda invariably forgives the transgression of His humble servant! Come, I shall accompany you to Kariyani and intercede on your behalf.”
They arrived in Kariyani just as Shreehari, accompanied by saints and chieftains, was returning from the lake toward the darbargadh. Calling out at the entrance, the Kazi asked, “Swaminarayan! Pray halt, I have an important question for you.” Maharaj graciously invited him into the royal court. In the courtyard, the Kazi asked directly: “Swaminarayan! Are You truly Khuda or not?” Shreehari smiled: “Yes, respected Kazi, We are Khuda. What question troubles your mind?” The Kazi challenged: “If You are Khuda, Khuda forgives His servant’s errors; why then did You not forgive this devotee’s lapse?”
Shreeji Maharaj provided a profound judicial illustration: “Kazi Saheb, consider this. When a thief is brought before a judge, the magistrate examines his prior records. If the criminal has previously committed offenses and breached leniency, the judge combines both offenses and inflicts double the penalty! Similarly, when a jiva surrenders to Us, We remit the sins of countless past lifetimes upon his commitment to the sacred vows. But if he wilfully transgresses Our sacred commandments again, he must bear the consequences of both the past pardoned sins and his present transgressions! Divine liberation cannot occur without absolute moral rectitude.”
Hearing this unassailable spiritual logic, the Kazi was thoroughly humbled. Holding his ears in reverent submission, he proclaimed: “Swaminarayan Maharaj! You are indeed the true Khuda; Your justice is absolute and flawless!” The Kazi prostrated at Shreehari’s lotus feet, and beholding the devotee’s heartfelt repentance, Shreehari restored him to the fellowship.
