Raghavanand Swami and the Discretion of Speech

One day, Shri Hari was gracing an assembly in the Darbargadh of Dada Khachar in Gadhpur. Senior sadhus, including Sadguru Muktanand Swami, and numerous devotees were drinking the divine nectar of Shri Hari’s discourse. Emphasizing the supreme importance of polite and thoughtful speech, Shri Hari said, “Swami! There is a vast difference in how words are spoken; one speech contains pure nectar, while another contains venom.”

Just then, Sadguru Raghavanand Swami arrived after completing a satsang tour of rural villages. He offered his prostrations (dandvat pranam) to Shri Hari and sat down. Shri Hari warmly inquired about his well-being, seated him close by, and resumed narrating an incident:

“Once, We, along with Raghavanand Swami, Sura Khachar, and ten to twenty horsemen, were traveling together. On the way, we arrived at a village called Sokhda. It was intensely hot, everyone was parched with thirst, and the horses also desperately needed water. We halted under the cool shade of a large banyan tree at the outskirts of the village. At that time, Dada Khachar’s attendant named Trikam was with us. We sent him to the village well where the local women were drawing water and filling their pots. Trikam went there and insolently shouted to the women, ‘Hey, my father’s wives (stepmothers)! Give us water to drink!’ Hearing this offensive remark, the women became furious, began hurling abuses, and rushed at Trikam with their brass pots to beat him. They refused to give a single drop of water, and Trikam returned to us crestfallen and empty-handed.

Then We sent Raghavanand Swami. He approached the well and spoke with immense gentleness and respect, ‘O mothers! We are weary travelers halting at the outskirts of your village. Along with us, Bhagwan Shree Swaminarayan Himself has graced your village! Great is the fortune of your village today that the Lord has arrived here! He is very thirsty, and our horses are also parched from the long journey. If you would kindly lend us a bucket and rope, we will draw water to quench our thirst and water the horses. Mothers, you are kind-hearted and relieve the misery of others.’

Hearing Raghavanand Swami’s sweet and courteous words, the women gladly replied, ‘Revered Swami, please take this pot of water and offer it to the Lord on our behalf, and then all of you may drink. Please ask the others to bring the horses here; we will gladly draw two to four pots each and water all the horses!’ Saying this, they offered a pot of fresh water. Raghavanand Swami brought it to Shri Hari; Shri Hari was offered the water, and everyone drank and felt thoroughly refreshed.

While sitting there, We remarked, ‘Swami, you quenched everyone’s thirst, but all of us are hungry as well.’

At that moment, Sura Khachar teased, ‘Maharaj, Raghavanand Swami quenched our thirst, but will food fall from the heavens for Swami to satisfy our hunger as well?!’

Hearing this, Raghavanand Swami humbly said, ‘O Maharaj, please rest here; by Your divine grace, I shall arrange a sumptuous feast of laddoos.’ Saying this, Swami walked on foot to a neighboring Garasiya village about two miles away. At the village square (choro), the elderly Garasiyas were seated in a gathering. Raghavanand Swami went there, covered his head with a cloth, and began weeping loudly.

The village elders inquired with concern, ‘O Rajgor (Brahmin)! Why are you weeping so bitterly?’

Raghavanand Swami lamented, ‘When I was traveling to Dwarka, my mother passed away. At that time, the generous Garasiyas of Khad-Khambhaliya and Amliyala donated flour, ghee, and jaggery to prepare laddoos for my mother’s memorial feast (khandhiya). Now, returning from Dwarka after darshan, I received word that my father has also passed away! Tomorrow morning is his memorial rite, and I have no provisions whatsoever. You are the masters of this village and generous souls, so I have come to plead for provisions for my father’s rites. I will abide by whatever you decide.’

Hearing Raghavanand Swami’s plea, the generous Garasiyas rose one by one and brought from their homes flour, ghee, and sugar—some half a maund, some ten to fifteen sers—totaling about three maunds of fine dry provisions. They arranged a farmer’s bullock cart and sent it alongside Swami.

Swami loaded all the provisions into the cart and brought it to the banyan tree where Shriji Maharaj was resting. When the cart was unloaded, Raghavanand Swami smiled and said, ‘Here, Sura Khachar! Food has indeed fallen from the heavens! Now prepare laddoos and feast to your heart’s content!’ Beholding this, Shri Hari laughed heartily and was immensely pleased with Swami. The sadhus then prepared a delicious meal of laddoos, and all the sadhus and devotees dined joyfully under the banyan tree.”

In this manner, Shri Hari expounded upon the merits and demerits of speech that day and showered boundless grace upon Raghavanand Swami.
