Kakabhai of Rojka and Shriji Maharaj’s Discourse
In the month of Chaitra, Samvat 1876, Darbar Shri Kakabhai, a devout follower from the village of Rojka, had no children. At that time, an itinerant Brahmin visited the village and said to his wife, “If you go to Prabhas Patan, you will be blessed with a child.” Persuaded by this, his wife insisted on visiting Prabhas Patan for pilgrimage, and both Kakabhai and his wife went there for darshan. On their return journey, they came to Gadhpur.
At that time, Shri Hari was seated in the Akshar Ordi along with His close companions Sura Khachar, Moka Khachar, Somla Khachar, and others. When Kakabhai came to Akshar Ordi to offer his respects, Shriji Maharaj warmly inquired about his well-being. Because there was some dispute concerning Dada Khachar’s land at Mandavdhar, Maharaj lovingly requested Kakabhai to stay in Gadhpur for about a month. Kakabhai gladly agreed, and Shri Hari instructed Dada Khachar to arrange suitable lodging for him.
After Kakabhai departed for his lodging, Shri Hari advised Sura Khachar and Moka Khachar, “Sura Bapu, you have a playful, teasing nature; therefore, We specifically urge you not to say anything hurtful or make fun of Kakabhai.” Sura Khachar and Moka Khachar concurred, saying, “As You wish, Maharaj.” Soon after, the thal was ready; Shri Hari partook of the meal, and all the Darbars returned to their respective quarters.
In the afternoon, an assembly gathered under the shade of the neem tree in the Darbargadh. Sadhus and devotees sat reverently before Shri Hari. Kakabhai was also seated directly facing Shri Hari, while Sura Khachar sat close to Maharaj’s cot. Just then, Sura Khachar’s young son, Natha Khachar, came and sat upon his father’s lap. Sura Khachar remarked loudly, “Maharaj, this Nathiye of mine never went to Kashi, never to Kedar, never to Jagannath or Prayag, nor did he ever visit Gokul-Mathura or Dwarka! He went nowhere! Brahma needlessly keeps creating creation after creation!” Saying this, he lifted Natha from his lap and said, “Run away now, how many of you can I keep playing with!” In this subtle manner, he mocked Kakabhai’s lack of progeny and his pilgrimage undertaken for that purpose. Kakabhai understood the veiled mockery, and his face turned gloomy. Shri Hari noticed this instantly and signaled to Sura Khachar to speak no further. At dusk, after the sandhya arti, the assembly dispersed for dinner.
After dinner, Sura Khachar and Somla Khachar visited Shri Hari at Akshar Ordi. Recalling the afternoon incident, Shri Hari reprimanded Sura Khachar, “Sura Bapu, We specifically asked you not to mock Kakabhai, yet you made fun of him?” Sura Khachar replied defensively, “Maharaj, only a wretched person would mock Kakabhai; I was merely speaking about my own son Nathiya!” Shri Hari smiled and said, “Your speech and the cawing of a crow are identical! Under the pretext of teasing your own boy, you struck at the Garasiya and taunted him.” Thus, Shri Hari affectionately reproached Sura Khachar. That night in the assembly, Shri Hari delivered profound discourses on His supreme supremacy and divine majesty, instilling unwavering faith in everyone’s heart.
The following morning, on the full moon day (Purnima), Kakabhai posed a question to Sadguru Nityanand Swami in the assembly: “From deep within, one inner voice urges us to indulge in worldly sense desires, while another voice strictly forbids it. Who is the one that forbids, and who is the one that consents?” Nityanand Swami replied, “The one that forbids is the jiva (soul), and the one that consents is the man (mind).” Shri Hari then elaborated upon this answer in great depth.
Then Kakabhai asked another question: “O Maharaj! For one person, the internal battle with worldly desires and negative influences (kusang) has ceased, and he possesses only the strength of the holy Sant. For another person, the internal struggle rages continuously. Between these two, the one whose battle has subsided attains God’s divine abode upon death—there is no doubt about that. But what will be the fate of the one who passes away while continually fighting this internal battle? Please explain.”
Shriji Maharaj gave a magnificent answer: “Suppose a warrior goes out to fight and encounters weak opponents like merchants, and easily defeats them—he is indeed considered victorious. Another warrior sets out to fight and faces formidable, ferocious fighters like Arabs, Rajputs, Kathis, or Kolis; they are extremely difficult to conquer and cannot be vanquished easily like frail merchants. He battles them incessantly. If he triumphs during the fight, he wins; but even if the enemies are not repelled and his lifespan comes to an end while battling and he dies—would his master not recognize his valor? The master knows, ‘Fierce warriors came before him whom he could not readily conquer, whereas the other faced feeble foes.’ Both remain in the master’s vision. In the exact same manner, God helps that devotee, thinking, ‘He faces the fierce onslaught of base thoughts and worldly doubts, yet he valiantly fights on—bravo to him!’ Knowing this, God extends His divine help. Therefore, remain fearless and do not worry. Continuously worship God, keep deep association with the holy Sant, and stay away from bad company.”
Thus Shri Hari delivered profound teachings, which are faithfully enshrined in Vachanamrut Gadhada First 70.
