The Incident of Kayabhai of Kamdhiala and the Dog

Kayabhai, a valiant devotee hailing from the village of Kamdhiala, possessed an extraordinary spiritual mindset brimming with profound understanding of divine glory (mahimā). Considering himself supremely fortunate, he harbored immense reverence and glory for Shriji Maharaj, the holy sadhus, and all the devotees of the Satsang.

Once, he journeyed to Gadhpur (Gadhada) to have the divine darshan of Shriji Maharaj. At that time, in the early morning, Shriji Maharaj was presiding over a spiritual assembly under the sacred neem tree (limbataru) in the courtyard of Dada Khachar’s royal residence (darbar). As Kayabhai was walking across the courtyard toward the assembly, his gaze remained fixated with deep longing upon the divine form of Shriji Maharaj. In the dawn’s dim light, his foot inadvertently struck a dog resting in the courtyard. True to its animal nature, the dog let out a sharp, startled yelp. In that instant, Kayabhai was stricken with immense remorse and grief, as though he had committed a grave offense against an exalted devotee of God! Filled with genuine humility and repentance, he immediately dropped to the ground and began performing prostrations (dandavat pranam) before the dog.

Observing this from the assembly, Shriji Maharaj spoke aloud, “Whom is Kayabhai offering dandavat pranam to over there? Is some revered sadhu seated there? Go and see!” A Kathi devotee went to inspect and returned, saying, “Maharaj! There is no sadhu there. A dog is sitting in the courtyard, and Kayabhai is offering dandavat to it!” Shriji Maharaj then summoned Kayabhai and asked, “Kayabhai, why were you offering dandavat pranam to a dog?”

With folded hands and heartfelt sincerity, Kayabhai replied, “O Maharaj! This dog is supremely fortunate. You are the supreme Fountainhead of all avatars (Sarva-avatar-na avatari), and countless liberated souls (Muktas) reside here in Your divine presence. Blessed by the sacred dust of Your holy lotus feet (charan-raj) and those of Your saints, this entire land is supremely sacred—a sanctified dust that is rare and unattainable even for the greatest celestial devas! This dog is truly privileged to sit and roll in such divine holy dust. Having struck such a blessed creature with my foot, I have incurred a grave spiritual offense. Thus, to seek forgiveness for my transgression, I offered dandavat pranam to this dog.”

Beholding Kayabhai’s sublime spiritual comprehension, boundless humility, and transcendental vision of divine glory (mahimā-drashti), Shriji Maharaj was immensely pleased with him.
