The Resolute Faith of Kayabhai Sandhi of Kamdhiala

Near the town of Derdi in the Gondal region lies a small village named Kamdhiala. In that village lived a Sandhi Muslim named Kayabhai. Possessing the intense, fiery nature of the Sandhi community, Kayabhai had previously been known for a harsh, quick-tempered temperament. However, through the awakening of merits from past lives, he attained the rare divine association of Bhagwan Swaminarayan. Blessed by the grace of the Supreme Lord, Kayabhai was transformed into an exceptional and unflinching devotee.

Once, Shriji Maharaj was traveling on horseback from Junagadh toward Gadhpur accompanied by a entourage of Kathi Darbars. On their route lay the village of Kamdhiala. Because the journey had been long and exhausting, Maharaj paused on the outskirts of Kamdhiala to allow the tired horses a brief rest. Shriji Maharaj rested leaning against the trunk of a large, shady peepal tree in the village square (gondre). The Kathi chieftains also sat beside Shri Hari, enjoying the peaceful respite. At that very moment, Kayabhai happened to walk by, and his eyes fell upon the enchantingly radiant form of Shri Hari. Shriji Maharaj was conversing warmly with Sura Bapu and others with a gentle smile playing upon His lips. As Kayabhai drew a little closer, omniscient Shriji Maharaj affectionately called him by name: “Come, Kayabhai, please come!” Shri Hari inquired after his well-being and imparted profound spiritual wisdom. Kayabhai was spellbound by the divine darshan and sweet words of Shriji Maharaj. A deep, unshakable conviction arose within his soul that he had found the manifest Supreme God (Pragat Khuda). Merits from past incarnations blossomed in his consciousness. As Shri Hari and the Kathi Darbars prepared to mount their steeds and depart, Kayabhai folded his hands and earnestly pleaded, “O Lord of the Universe (Parvardigar)! Please accept me as Your disciple. I promise to faithfully observe all Your religious commandments and moral vows.” Shriji Maharaj gently said, “Kayabhai, you are a valiant man and your heart is filled with pure love toward Us; thus, you truly belong to Us. However, if you become a Satsangi, your fellow Muslim brethren will harass you and cause you immense hardship. Therefore, simply cherish love in your heart and remember Us in your prayers.” Kayabhai replied with unyielding resolve, “Maharaj! No matter what hardships I may face, I will uphold Your commandments even at the cost of my life! Please bless me and purify my life.” Pleased by his unshakeable faith, Shriji Maharaj administered the moral vows (vartaman), initiated him into the Satsang fellowship, and guided him on code of righteous living before departing for Gadhpur. Kayabhai stood peacefully, gazing upon Shri Hari until He rode far into the distance. Returning home, he cleansed himself thoroughly, renounced all vices and addictions, and began engaging in devout prayers with boundless humility and deep reverence.

Witnessing Kayabhai embracing the faith of Bhagwan Swaminarayan and leading a life of continuous devotion, many of his caste brethren began mocking, slandering, and ostracizing him. Yet, completely fearless and unashamed, Kayabhai derived immense inner strength from his Satsang faith. Whenever large festivals were organized at Gadhpur, Vadtal, and other holy places, he would travel there to attain darshan of Shri Hari and the company of the holy sants. At these gatherings, whatever seva was assigned to him—including standing guard on night watch—he performed with immense devotion and joy.

Under Kayabhai’s devout influence, his wife, children, and close relatives also gradually embraced the Satsang fellowship. However, envious locals could not tolerate this transformation and constantly sought ways to harass him. Despite being a formidable warrior, Kayabhai silently endured every tribulation, never slackening in his moral discipline or his daily chanting and kirtans. Eventually, his adversaries went to the Muslim village ruler (Gamdhani) and lodged a bitter complaint: “Kayabhai is our Muslim brother, yet he follows a Hindu faith! Moreover, he has built a temple in his home, where every evening he leads loud chants of ‘Swaminarayan’. You are an Islamic ruler; it is unacceptable for Kayabhai to propagate a Hindu faith. You must take strict and immediate action to compel him to abandon it!” Swayed by their instigations, the village chieftain summoned Kayabhai and commanded, “Being a Muslim, why do you follow the religion of Hindus? If you wish to live peacefully in our village, you must renounce Swaminarayan immediately, or else you will not be permitted to stay here!” Kayabhai replied humbly, “You are our sovereign ruler. Ever since I became a disciple of Bhagwan Swaminarayan, my life has improved in every moral and spiritual aspect. If my conduct causes any harm to the state or its citizens, or if I have acted unrighteously, it is your duty to punish me.” Offended that his royal decree was questioned, the chieftain flew into a rage and shouted, “I will not listen to your explanations! You must abandon this nonsense at once!” Resolute in his faith, Kayabhai replied fearlessly, “Your Honor, under no circumstances can I abandon my faith! As long as life remains in this body, regardless of what suffering may come upon me, the holy name of Bhagwan Swaminarayan can never be parted from me. It has been etched into the very fabric of my soul! You may do whatever you see fit.” Astonished by such unyielding determination, the ruler immediately ordered his guards, “Soldiers, penalize this man by making him sit outside under the scorching summer sun!” The guards led Kayabhai outside into the searing heat of the month of Vaisakh and decreed, “You must sit in the scorching sun until the chieftain issues a counter-order!”

Kayabhai sat in the sweltering heat with joyful serenity, chanting the Swaminarayan Mahamantra without pause. It was the height of the summer heatwave, with blistering winds and scorching ground. Enduring a full day under such harsh sun would normally be agonizing, yet Kayabhai remained completely absorbed in the divine bliss of chanting God’s name, forgetting all physical discomfort. Meanwhile, Kayabhai had sat in the sun for barely two to three hours when the village chieftain suddenly developed an agonizing, unbearable burning sensation in his stomach! One physician after another was summoned, yet none of their treatments could quell the torment. For three agonizing days, renowned healers administered remedies, but the ruler found no relief. Finally, Rupshibhai, a well-known and skilled physician from the neighboring village of Derdi, was summoned. As Rupshibhai entered the village square, he noticed Kayabhai sitting under the blazing sun, peacefully chanting the Swaminarayan Mahamantra. Surprised, he approached him and asked, “Kayabhai, why are you sitting in this fierce heat chanting prayers?” Kayabhai explained, “Because I follow the Swaminarayan faith despite being a Muslim, the village chieftain grew angry and sentenced me to sit in the sun.”

Rupshibhai, being a devout Satsangi himself, was deeply pained to hear this. He went before the ruler, administered a calming medicine, and gently inquired, “Darbar Saheb, if you will permit me, may I speak candidly?” The ruler replied, “Please speak.” Rupshibhai said, “You have taken numerous medicines, yet this burning agony does not subside. It is my firm conviction that you do not suffer from any bodily illness; rather, you have committed a grave spiritual offense against an exalted devotee of God, and this agony is the direct consequence! If you wish to be cured, appease that devotee; his grace alone will heal you without need for medicine.” Realizing his grave mistake, the chieftain immediately had Kayabhai brought before him and declared respectfully, “You are free to worship Bhagwan Swaminarayan with all your heart; we shall never hinder you again.” Kayabhai returned home in peace, and in that very moment, the excruciating burning sensation in the ruler’s stomach vanished completely!
