Dahyabhai of Vanthli and His Sublime State of Devotion
In the village of Vanthli lived the great devotee Kalyanbapa, who had three sons: Devjibhai, Shamabhai, and Dahyabhai. As the Gujarati proverb goes, “The peacock’s eggs need not be painted,” following in their revered father’s footsteps, all three sons were exemplary and devout Satsangis. They enjoyed high respect both within the Satsang fellowship and society at large. Near Junagadh, they established two villages, Ivanagar and Navugam.
Among the three noble sons of Kalyanbapa, the youngest, Dahyabhai, had attained an extraordinarily elevated state as an Ekantik devotee. He would spend his time in the temple continuously engaged in meditation and devotional singing (bhajan). His penance-filled and humble devotional steadfastness, reminiscent of great ascetic rishis of yore, humbled the pride of even the greatest souls. Having conquered appetite, sleep, and worldly desires, he subdued the senses and the inner faculties (antahkaran), always maintaining a state of identifying himself with the divine soul (Brahmarup) and remaining immersed in God.
Dahyabhai never slept at night by stretching his legs. Leaning his back against a pillar in the temple, he would remain absorbed in ceaseless meditation and prayers. Late in the night, past midnight, when drowsiness overtook him, he would take a brief nap while remaining seated in that very posture. He never laid down a mattress, quilt, or bed; he only kept a handwoven coarse cloth (pachhedi), which he wrapped around himself only during bitter winter cold.
In Samvat 1948, following the grand yagna festival at Gadhada, Acharya Viharilalji Maharaj organized a spiritual discourse series (parayan) of the Satsangi Jivan scripture in Vadtal. On that momentous occasion, senior Sadgurus and saints from Gadhpur, Junagadh, Dholera, and other shrines arrived in Vadtal. From Junagadh, Sadguru Balamukunddasji Swami also attended, and Dahyabhai of Vanthli accompanied his holy group to attain darshan. The congregation of Sadguru Balamukunddas Swami, along with revered senior Sadguru Swami Ramcharandasji of Gadhpur and other saints, stayed on the second floor of the assembly hall. On one side, seats were arranged for the sadhus, and directly opposite them near a pillar, Dahyabhai’s seat was placed. The temple administrator (Kothari) had sent a mattress and a quilt for him, but Dahyabhai simply rolled them up and kept them behind his back solely to lean against. Sadguru Ramcharandasji Swami was an elderly saint and would wake up three to four times during the night to relieve himself. Every time Swami arose, he observed Dahyabhai turning his rosary beads (mala) in devout prayer, never once lying down with legs stretched out. Swami watched this unbroken dedication for eight consecutive nights.
Finally, one day, Ramcharandasji Swami asked Balamukunddas Swami, “Swami! Which village does this devotee accompanying you belong to?” Swami replied, “He is Dahyabhai, the son of the exalted devotee Kalyanbhai of Vanthli.” Swami Ramcharandasji exclaimed with deep admiration, “Oh! What an extraordinary spiritual state he has attained! Whether it is twelve, two, or three in the night, whenever I wake up, he is always turning his beads in prayer. For eight days I have observed him closely, and not once has he stretched his legs to sleep. Truly, our feet cannot even fit into his shoes (we cannot even fathom matching his spiritual stature)!”
On another occasion, quilts were being prepared for the saints in the temple. The sadhus asked him, “Dahyabhai, what length and breadth should we keep for these quilts?” Dahyabhai innocently and detachedly remarked, “Only someone who has ever used or spread a quilt would know its measurements!” Hearing this profound dispassion, the sadhus were filled with wonder and remarked, “Behold! Despite being a householder, what an exalted spiritual state he possesses! Scriptures narrate the detached glory of King Janak and King Ambarish, yet Dahyabhai’s spiritual detachment surpasses even those.”
In Vanthli, there was a sacred sanctified pool known as Suryakund, where Dahyabhai went every morning to bathe. Once, women from a local merchant family went to bathe at Suryakund early in the morning. One of the ladies removed her heavy gold anklets (sankla), placed them aside, and after bathing, inadvertently left them behind. Even after returning home, she was engrossed in household chores and completely forgot about the gold ornaments. As per his daily routine, Dahyabhai arrived at Suryakund for his morning bath and noticed the gold anklets lying on the ground. He reflected, “Another’s property is not ours to take, nor even to touch. Someone must have forgotten this ornament here and will surely suffer great grief. Lest someone misappropriate it, let me place it safely out of sight.” Using a small stick, he picked up the anklets without touching them with his bare hands and carefully concealed them in a nearby cactus hedge. He then completed his bath, arrived at the temple, and sat before Thakorji turning his rosary beads. Around four or five in the afternoon, the woman suddenly remembered that she had left her gold anklets at Suryakund. However, by that time, many people had frequented the pool, so there seemed little hope of retrieving them. Hearing of her plight, someone advised, “Dahyabhai visits Suryakund very early every morning to bathe. Go ask him; he is an impeccably honest and pious man, and will truthfully tell you if he saw anything.” The lady’s husband went to Dahyabhai’s house, but finding him away, proceeded to the temple and explained the situation. Dahyabhai calmly said, “Sheth! When I went to bathe, I saw the anklets lying there. To ensure no one stole them, I placed them safely in the cactus hedge nearby. If you look carefully, you will find them there.” The merchant rushed to Suryakund and found the gold anklets intact. He was filled with profound reverence and admiration for Dahyabhai’s immaculate integrity.
In Junagadh, Swami Yogeshwardasji, a prominent disciple of Sadguru Gunatitanand Swami, was a highly revered and spiritually accomplished saint. Dahyabhai shared a deep bond of divine affection with him. In Samvat 1957, Swami Yogeshwardasji fell critically ill, to the point that his earthly departure seemed imminent. At that time, Dahyabhai prayed to Shriji Maharaj with heartfelt anguish and devotion to spare Swami’s life. Consequently, Shriji Maharaj did not take Swami to His divine abode. Swami Yogeshwardasji perceived this through his inner spiritual vision. Later, when Dahyabhai came for his darshan, Swami affectionately reproached him, “Dahyabhai, you made Shriji Maharaj make a futile journey and prevented me from departing to Akshardham, didn’t you?” Dahyabhai humbly replied, “Swami, I wish to reach Akshardham before you!” In the month of Jeth in Samvat 1958, Dahyabhai attained Akshardham, and only after him did Swami Yogeshwardasji depart for the divine abode.
