ભાવનગરના રૂપાભાઈ અને અત્તરનો પ્રસંગ
સંવત ૧૮૮૫માં ભગવાન શ્રીહરિ સહુ સંતો ભકતો સાથે સારંગપુરથી નીસર્યા અને વરતેજ થઇને ભાવનગર નરેશ વજેસિંહ બાપુના આમંત્રણે એમના દરબારમાં પધરામણી અર્થે પધારવા કરવા નીસર્યા. દાદાખાચર અને સહું સંતો ગઢપુરથી સીધા જ ભાવનગર આવ્યા અને શ્રીહરિના કહેણે કારીયાણીથી વસ્તાખાચર વગેરે સહું શ્રીહરિ સાથે જોડાયા. ભાવનગર પધારી શ્રીજીમહારાજે પોતાના સંતો-ભક્તો સાથે પોતાના ઉત્તમ અને આજ્ઞાપાલક શુરવિર ભક્ત રૂપાભાઈને ત્યાં ઉતારો કર્યો હતો. જયારે ભાવેણાં દરબાર શ્રીવજેસિંહના મહેલમાં પધરામણી કરવાની હતી. તેથી, મુકુંદબ્રહ્મચારીએ વસ્ત્ર-અલંકારો પરિધાન કરાવ્યા. શ્રીહરિએ શ્વેતવસ્ત્ર પરિધાન કર્યા અને તેના પર સુરતના પ્રેમી ભક્ત આત્મારામ દરજીએ જે પ્રેમના ગૂંથણે ગૂંથેલી ડગલી બનાવી તે ડગલી ધારણ કરી. શ્રીજીમહારાજની નયનરમ્ય મૂર્તિનાં દર્શન કરતાં સૌ સંતો-ભક્તો થાકતા ન હતા. તે શોભામાં અભિવૃદ્ધિ કરવા ભકતરાજ રૂપાભાઈએ મહારાજનાં વસ્ત્ર પર અત્તર છાંટ્યું. શ્રીહરિએ પૂછ્યું જે “રૂપાભાઈ આ શું ?” રૂપાભાઈ તો કંઈ બોલ્યા નહિ પણ રાજાભાઇ એ હાથ જોડીને કહ્યું, “હે મહારાજ ! આ તો રૂપાભાઈએ તમને અત્તર છાંટી આપ્યું. અમારા ગોહિલવાડના રજવાડાઓમાં અત્તર છાંટવાનો રિવાજ છે.” શ્રીહરિ ભકતનો ભાવ જાણીને રાજી થતા થકા હસ્યા અને સહુને હિત ઉપદેશ દેતા થકા બોલ્યા જે “ જુઓ ભકતો, અત્તરની સુગંધે સહું ના શરીર સુગંધે મઘમઘે ! પણ જો અંતર ગોબરું હોય તો? આ તો દેહ માં જે વિકારો હોય અને તે પરસેવા વાટે દુર્ગંધ મારતું હોય તેવા શરીરની ગંધને ઢાંકવા માટેની આ રીત છે.” થોડી વાર સુધી રૂપાભાઈ ને રાજાભાઈની સામું જોઈ શ્રીજીમહારાજ ફરીને બોલ્યા જે “જો અંતર વિકાર વિનાના ચોખ્ખા હોય અને આત્માને પ્રભુભક્તિના રંગથી રંગી દયો, તો આ શરીરમાંથી અત્તરને પણ ભૂલાવે તેવી સુગંધ છૂટે અને આ સુગંધ એવી તો છૂટે કે તમારી આસપાસનું વાતાવરણ ભક્તિમય બની જાય હો..!

भावनगर के रूपाभाई और इत्र का प्रसंग
संवत १८८५ में भगवान श्रीहरि समस्त संतों और भक्तों के साथ सारंगपुर से प्रस्थान कर वरतेज होते हुए, भावनगर नरेश वजेसंह बापू के निमंत्रण पर उनके राजदरबार में पधरामणी करने हेतु निकले। दादा खाचर और अन्य संत गढ़पुर से सीधे भावनगर पहुँचे तथा श्रीहरि की आज्ञा से कारियाणी से वस्ता खाचर आदि सभी भक्त भी श्रीहरि के साथ सम्मिलित हो गए।
भावनगर पधारकर श्रीजी महाराज ने संतों-भक्तों सहित अपने परम आज्ञाकारी, शूरवीर और अनन्य भक्त रूपाभाई के यहाँ मुकाम (उतारा) किया।
जब भावेणा दरबार श्री वजेसंह के राजमहल में पधरामणी का समय हुआ, तब मुकुंद ब्रह्मचारी ने श्रीजी महाराज को सुंदर वस्त्र-आभूषण धारण कराए। श्रीहरि ने श्वेत वस्त्र धारण किए और उनके ऊपर सूरत के अनन्य प्रेमी भक्त आत्माराम दर्जी द्वारा प्रेम के धागों से गूंथी गई सुंदर डगली (अंगरखा) धारण की।
श्रीजी महाराज की उस नयनाभिराम दिव्य मूर्ति के दर्शन करते हुए संत-भक्त तृप्त नहीं हो रहे थे। उस दिव्य शोभा की अभिवृद्धि करने के भाव से भक्तराज रूपाभाई ने महाराज के वस्त्रों पर सुगंधित इत्र छिड़का।
श्रीहरि ने पूछा, “रूपाभाई! यह क्या?” रूपाभाई तो संकोचवश कुछ नहीं बोले, परंतु राजाभाई ने हाथ जोड़कर विनयपूर्वक कहा, “हे महाराज! यह तो रूपाभाई ने आप पर इत्र छिड़का है। हमारे गोहिलवाड़ के रजवाड़ों में आदर-सत्कार हेतु इत्र छिड़कने की प्रथा है।”
श्रीहरि भक्त का विशुद्ध भाव जानकर अत्यंत प्रसन्न हुए, मंद-मंद मुस्कुराए और सभी को हितकारी उपदेश देते हुए बोले, “देखिए भक्तों! इत्र की सुगंध से सभी का नश्वर शरीर तो महक उठता है, परंतु यदि अंतःकरण ही मलिन हो तो क्या लाभ? यह बाह्य इत्र तो देह के विकारों और पसीने की दुर्गंध को छिपाने का एक सांसारिक उपाय मात्र है।” कुछ क्षण रूपाभाई और राजाभाई की ओर स्नेहपूर्वक देखकर श्रीजी महाराज पुनः बोले, “यदि अंतःकरण विकारों से रहित होकर निर्मल हो जाए और आत्मा प्रभु-भक्ति के दिव्य रंग में रंग जाए, तो इस शरीर से सांसारिक इत्र को भी लजाने वाली ऐसी अलौकिक सुगंध प्रस्फुटित होती है कि आपके आसपास का संपूर्ण वातावरण ही भक्तिमय बन जाता है!”

Rupabhai of Bhavnagar and the Fragrance of Attar
In Samvat 1885, Bhagwan Shri Hari departed from Sarangpur accompanied by revered saints and devotees. Traveling via Vartej, He set out to visit the royal court of Bhavnagar upon the cordial invitation of King Vajesinh Bapu. Dada Khachar and other holy sadhus arrived in Bhavnagar directly from Gadhpur, while Vasta Khachar and other devotees from Kariyani joined Shri Hari upon His instructions.
Upon arriving in Bhavnagar, Shriji Maharaj, along with His holy saints and devotees, resided at the home of Rupabhai—a noble, valiant, and exceptionally obedient devotee.
When the time arrived for the divine visit (padhramani) to the palace of Bhavnagar Darbar Shri Vajesinh, Mukund Brahmachari adorned Maharaj in divine garments and ornaments. Shri Hari donned pristine white attire, and over it, wore a splendid coat (dagli) exquisitely tailored with strands of pure love by His loving devotee Atmaram Darji of Surat.
Beholding the enchanting and blissful murti of Shriji Maharaj, the assembly of saints and devotees gazed upon Him with unceasing devotion. Desiring to enhance this divine splendor, devotee Rupabhai gently sprayed fragrant perfume (attar) upon Maharaj’s sacred garments.
Shri Hari affectionately asked, “Rupabhai, what is this?” In humble reverence, Rupabhai remained silent, but Rajabhai folded his hands and submitted, “O Maharaj! Rupabhai has sprayed attar upon You. In our royal courts of Gohilwad, it is an esteemed tradition to sprinkle attar in honor of noble guests.”
Recognizing the pure love and devotional sentiment of His devotee, Shri Hari smiled graciously and imparted profound spiritual wisdom to everyone: “Look, devotees! The fragrance of attar makes everyone’s mortal body smell sweet. But what if the inner self remains impure? This worldly attar is merely a means to mask the foul odors of perspiration and bodily imperfections.” Looking gently at Rupabhai and Rajabhai for a moment, Shriji Maharaj continued: “If the inner conscience (antahkaran) is cleansed of all base desires and flaws, and the soul is imbued with the divine hue of pure devotion to God, then a fragrance far surpassing all worldly attar radiates from this very body—a divine fragrance so transcendent that the entire atmosphere around you becomes sacred and devotional!”
