Devji Bhagat of Nenpur and Shriji Maharaj
Once, Sadguru Krupanand Swami and Gurudev Gunatitanand Swami arrived in the village of Nenpur during their spiritual travels (satsang vicharan). Nenpur was the home of Devji Bhagat, who was like the foremost bead in the rosary of the devotees of Bhagwan Shri Hari. In the evening, after the sandhya aarti and spiritual discourses were completed, Devji Bhagat returned from his agricultural fields. After feeding and tending to his oxen, he immediately ran to the mandir to have darshan of the holy saints. Devji Bhagat offered prostrations (dandvat pranam) and sat beside the swamis to listen to the divine discourses. Around ten o’clock at night, Krupanand Swami said, “Bhagat, it has grown very late. You must be exhausted from a full day of arduous farming. Please go home and rest.” Devji Bhagat replied, “Very well, Swami! You too must be weary from your travels. Please take rest, and I shall take your leave.” Swami asked, “What will you do after going home?” Bhagat said, “A covered plate of dinner will be waiting for me, and everyone in the household will be asleep. I will go home, light a lamp, take my dinner, and return straight to the fields. There, I will chant my daily discipline of five hundred rosaries (malas). Then I will tell sleep, ‘Come if you wish.’ If sleep comes, well and good; otherwise, I will continue chanting the rosary until dawn.” Hearing this, Sadguru Krupanand Swami exclaimed, “Listen, Gunatitanand Swami! Look at the steadfast and unwavering faith of this devotee!”
On another occasion, Devji Bhagat’s young son passed away (departed for Akshardham). When neighbors and villagers began coming to express their mourning and condolences, the enlightened and detached Devji Bhagat went to his fields to sit in peace, and sent his wife to Gadhpur with a large pot of pure ghee. Upon reaching Gadhpur, she arrived at the Darbargadh veranda, placed the pot of ghee before Shriji Maharaj, and bowed at His holy lotus feet. Shriji Maharaj inquired, “Well, is our Bhagat happy and doing well?” Devji Bhagat’s wife replied, “O Maharaj! Bhagat was already blissful by Your grace, and now You have made him even more blissful!” Shri Hari asked, “How so?” Folding her hands reverently, she said, “O Maharaj! By Your divine grace, Bhagat has always been at peace. We had only one young son, who was blessed by Your compassion with divine vision (niravaran drishti). Because of that, he had continuous darshan of You and would daily narrate Your divine pastimes (leelas). Bhagat then thought that if our son became entangled in the bondage of worldly life, he might become complacent and miss out on the supreme bliss of Your divine darshan. Therefore, Bhagat resolved that he should attain Your divine abode and perpetually relish the divine bliss of Your form. Fulfilling Bhagat’s wish, You granted him a place in Akshardham; hence, today he is even more fortunate and blissful. Now our worldly anxieties have also ended, and we can engage in devotion peacefully. As soon as our son departed for Akshardham and his final rites were completed, Bhagat went to live in the farm, and he sent me here to You with this pot of ghee so that no one would gather at our home to weep or mourn.”
Maharaj listened to her words with a gentle smile. At that time, Shriji Maharaj was taking His midday meal, enjoying bhadku (a traditional porridge). The devotee’s wife placed the pot of ghee before Maharaj. Shriji Maharaj personally scooped out ghee with His own hands and began eating it with relish. Turning to all the royal residents of Darbargadh, Shriji Maharaj remarked, “When a mere infant daughter of Dada Khachar passed away, you all shaved your heads in mourning and wept unceasingly; you even forgot to serve Us milk or offer the sacred meal (thaal)! Yet here, their only young son has departed for Akshardham, and they observe no sorrow at all; instead, she has brought a pot of ghee for Our meal, and Our devotee is sitting peacefully in his fields.” Hearing these illuminating words, Jivuba, Laduba, Panchuba, and all the others instantly understood the profound spiritual significance of Shriji Maharaj’s teachings.
Reflecting on the historical setting of Vachanamrut Gadhada I-2, after partaking of the bhadku, Shriji Maharaj went to the veranda outside Vasudevnarayan’s room and narrated this entire episode in detail to the gathered saints. Beholding the extraordinary detachment (videhi sthiti) of Devji Bhagat, everyone in the assembly was filled with deep wonder. It was undoubtedly after hearing this transcendental account of Devji Bhagat’s state beyond body-consciousness that Mayaram Bhatt thoughtfully asked Maharaj, “O Maharaj! What are the characteristics of supreme, middling, and inferior detachment (vairagya)?” And Shriji Maharaj answered this question through the illustration of King Janak, a householder—because the questioner, Mayaram Bhatt, was a householder, and Devji Bhagat and his noble wife, whose sublime spiritual state inspired the inquiry, were householders as well.
