The Divine Episodes of Hasanbhai and Natho of Sardhar

Once, Shri Hari was seated under the sacred neem tree (Limbataru) in the Darbargadh of Gadhpur, gracing a divine assembly. At that time, a mother from the village of Sardhar arrived in Gadhpur, carrying her two young sons, Hasanbhai and Natho, in a pair of pack-saddle baskets (chhalaka) balanced on a bullock. Upon reaching the Darbargadh, she unloaded the baskets and helped both boys out. Hasanbhai was afflicted with eightfold physical deformities (severely crippled), while his younger brother Natho was mute. Seeing the plight of the two small children, Sadguru Brahmanand Swami folded his hands before Shri Hari and reverently recited:

Mūkaṁ karoti vācālaṁ paṅguṁ laṅghayate girim | Yat-kṛpā tam-ahaṁ vande paramānandaṁ mādhavam ||

Filled with boundless compassion, Bhaktavatsal Shri Hari stood up from His cot. He placed His holy big toes upon Hasanbhai’s feet, held his neck, pulled him upward, and gave a gentle pat on his back. Miraculously, all physical deformities vanished from Hasanbhai’s body at once, and he began walking effortlessly! Shriji Maharaj then turned to the Kathi darbars and parshads seated in the assembly and commanded, “Catch a sparrow from the courtyard, open Natho’s mouth, and make the sparrow chirp inside it.” The Kathi darbars caught a sparrow from the courtyard, opened Natho’s mouth, and had the sparrow chirp. Instantly, Natho began speaking clearly! Overjoyed beyond measure, their mother folded her hands before Shri Hari and prayed with tears of gratitude, “O Maharaj! You are the ocean of mercy and the protector of the humble (Garib-nawaz). Please accept both my sons into Your holy service.” Recognizing the two souls as spiritual seekers from their past lives, Shriji Maharaj instructed Dada Khachar, “Keep them engaged in service at the farm (vadi).” From then on, both brothers began performing various humble devotional services at the farm.

Once, Hasanbhai observed the fast of Ekadashi. Toward evening, overwhelmed by intense hunger, he went to Motiba and pleaded, “Ba! Please give me some faral (fasting food); I am extremely hungry.” Motiba replied, “Hasan, faral is not ready right now, but there are chickpeas (chana) in the granary; roast and eat them.” Hasanbhai placed the chickpeas into a thimbdi (a broken earthenware pot piece), placed burning embers over it, and sat on the veranda outside Vasudev Narayan’s chamber to roast them. Just then, Maharaj returned to the Darbargadh from Lakshmi Vadi. Hearing the herald (chopdar) announce Maharaj’s arrival at the gate, Hasanbhai panicked, thinking, ‘If Maharaj sees me roasting and eating chickpeas on Ekadashi, He will be very displeased with me.’ Trembling with fear, he wrapped the hot thimbdi in a cloth and tried to run away. In his haste, the container slipped from his hands, scattering hot embers and roasted chickpeas all over the courtyard. At that exact moment, Shri Hari walked past the neem tree toward the Akshar Ordi. Seeing the chickpeas and embers strewn across the courtyard, Shri Hari asked Motiba, “Who spilled these chickpeas here?” Motiba explained, “Maharaj! Hasan was very hungry and was roasting chickpeas for his fast. Hearing Your arrival, he ran away out of fear.” Shriji Maharaj instructed His parshads, “Someone go call Hasan!” The parshads searched and brought Hasanbhai from the backyard where he was hiding.

Hasanbhai stood before Shriji Maharaj with folded hands, his entire body trembling with fear. Maharaj asked gently, “Hasan! Why did you scatter the chickpeas in the courtyard?” Hasanbhai answered timidly, “Maharaj! I was fasting for Ekadashi today and felt terribly hungry, so I was roasting chickpeas for faral. When You arrived, I fled in fright.” Hearing this, compassionate Shri Hari said lovingly, “Go, from now on you may have one simple meal (ektanu) on fasting days, but be sure to always observe Ekadashi.”

On another occasion in Gadhada, Hasanbhai engaged in the tobacco trade. Anticipating a financial loss, he approached a Brahmin named Ramchandra from the village of Runvad and said, “There is immense profit to be made in this tobacco trade. Load the bullock carts and go sell it in Sardhar.” Hasanbhai sent Ramchandra to Sardhar with carts laden with tobacco. That morning, after bathing, Shriji Maharaj sat down for His morning puja and inquired, “Where is Ramchandra?” Someone informed Him, “He has been sent to sell tobacco.” Shri Hari remarked, “Ramchandra Vipra used to recite the sacred Vishnu Sahasranama before Us daily; why was he sent there? Why make a cow carry the heavy load meant for a donkey? Send two horsemen immediately and call him back.” The two riders hurried after him and brought Ramchandra Vipra back from the road. That day, Shriji Maharaj summoned Hasanbhai and instructed him, “Whether there is profit or loss, the responsibility rests entirely upon your own shoulders.” (This Ramchandra, his brother Ratneshwar, and their mother had renounced their village to come to Gadhpur to serve Shriji Maharaj. Ramchandra recited the Vishnu Sahasranama every morning while Shriji Maharaj performed His puja. Later, both brothers received initiation from Shri Hari and became sadhus in the Brahmachari order. Ramchandra was initiated as Purushottamanand, while Ratneshwar was named Govindanand Brahmachari.)

At another time, Hasanbhai entered into a business venture in Gadhpur and incurred heavy debts. Shriji Maharaj had a public announcement made across Gadhpur: “Whoever has claims or dues against Hasan may collect them directly from him; Dada Khachar has no connection whatsoever with Hasan’s dealings.” Feeling deeply wounded by this public announcement, Hasanbhai arose early the next morning, left for Bhavnagar, boarded a vessel to Surat, and visited Sadguru Gopalanand Swami. Seeing him arrive unexpectedly, Gopalanand Swami asked, “Hasanbhai! What brings you here?” Hasanbhai lamented, “Shriji Maharaj ruined my honor in Gadhpur.” Swami asked, “Where do you intend to go now?” Hasanbhai declared, “I will go to Mumbai, meet the British Governor, and take the revenue lease (ijara) of the Gadhpur territory. Then, when I ride through the bazaars of Gadhada in a horse-drawn carriage and the prominent merchants (mahajan) bow and salute me, my lost honor will be restored!” Swami asked profoundly, “The One who stripped your pride in Gadhada—who do you know Him to be?” Hasanbhai replied, “I know Shriji Maharaj to be the Supreme Lord Himself.” Swami smiled and asked, “And if He changes the very heart and mind of the Governor, what will you do then?” Instantly, Hasanbhai realized his grave mistake. He broke down in tears of deep remorse at Swami’s feet and pleaded, “Swami! I will now do whatever you command.” Wishing for the spiritual welfare of his soul, the grave and serene Gopalanand Swami took Hasanbhai to Vadtal and appointed him as the Kothari of the mandir.

On yet another occasion, Hasanbhai had traveled toward Amreli, where he spotted carts carrying sacred murtis (deity idols) for sale. Returning to Gadhpur, he mentioned this to Shriji Maharaj. The next day, Shriji Maharaj had all the carts brought to Gadhpur and purchased all the murtis, except for one murti of Kaal Bhairav. Shri Hari placed His divine hand upon the Kaal Bhairav murti, blessed it, and declared that this deity would always remain holy and worshipped (this murti is presently enshrined in the Kaal Bhairav temple in Palitana). All the other murtis were bought by Shri Hari from the sculptor and personally installed by His own holy hands in Dada Khachar’s Darbargadh.
