Vela Suthar of Bagasara: Unwavering Devotion, the Chieftain’s Servant, and Temple Darshan

In the village of Bagasara lived Vela Suthar, a deeply committed devotee of Bhagwan Swaminarayan. Strictly adhering to the divine injunctions of the Shikshapatri, he made it an unbroken rule to visit the local mandir every night for holy darshan.

One night, as he stepped out of his house, torrential rains poured down. The streets turned pitch dark and inundated with mud. Because the mandir was located at some distance, a momentary thought arose in his mind: “The rain is exceedingly heavy tonight; let me return home and visit the mandir in the morning.” With this thought, he turned back towards his house.

On the path, he crossed paths with an attendant (khavas) of the local chieftain rushing along in haste. Surprised, Vela Bhagat asked, “Brother! Where are you hurrying through this torrential storm and pitch darkness?”

The servant casually answered, “I am running to the tavern to purchase a bottle of liquor for the Darbar!”

These words struck Vela Bhagat’s conscience like a thunderbolt! Deep self-reproach consumed him: “Alas! For mere wages and mundane sustenance, this servant braves this fierce deluge simply to fetch intoxicating liquor for his mortal master; yet I, a servant of the supreme Lord of infinite cosmoses, hesitate and turn back from His divine shrine due to a few raindrops?! Shame upon this body and shame upon such weak resolve!”

Reprimanding himself, Vela Bhagat instantly turned around, ran through the driving rain and mud, and reached the mandir. He offered prostrations, drank in the sanctifying darshan of the Lord, and upheld his sacred discipline unbroken. True devotees never let physical discomfort compromise their devotional fidelity to God.
