Kanabhagat Paleval Brahmin of Piperla: Scrupulous Honesty and Atonement for a Single Stalk

In the village of Piperla near Talaja in Saurashtra lived Kanabhagat, a devout Paleval Brahmin farmer. Introduced to Satsang by Sadguru Muktanand Swami, he lived by the strictest moral tenets of the Shikshapatri, refusing to touch even a blade of grass without the owner’s permission.

One afternoon while he was plowing his fields, his wife arrived bringing his lunch, carrying their young son Valji on her hip. On the path, the child threw a tantrum demanding a sweet stalk of sorghum (jowar). To placate the child, the mother snapped a single stalk from an adjacent field without the owner’s consent.

Under the shade of a tree, as Kanabhagat sat down to eat, he asked, “Why did you stoop near that roadside field on your way?” She innocently confessed what she had done. Kanabhagat was deeply distressed! Admonishing her, he said: “Tomorrow if the child asks you to jump into a well, will you jump? Taking anything without the owner’s permission is theft! Consuming food served by your hands today would be consuming sin! Only if you observe a complete fast in atonement shall I eat from your hands again.” Kanabhagat refused the meal and observed a strict fast himself that day.

On another evening, Kanabhagat brought home some green mung bean pods received as prasad at the mandir. Seeing them, his equally scrupulous wife challenged: “We do not grow mung in our fields; from whose farm did you unlawfully harvest these?” Kanabhagat immediately ran back to the mandir and brought the donor devotee home to testify that these were consecrated offerings from his own farm! Only then was she satisfied. Shreehari was endlessly delighted by the spotless moral integrity of this saintly couple.
