The Divine Episode of Mavjibhai and Panchabhai of Haliyad

In the village of Haliyad lived a devout devotee named Mavjibhai. However, his wife was deeply opposed to Satsang (kusangi). Whenever she brought lunch to the farm, she would deliberately place an onion in Mavjibhai’s food to harass him, and would even throw onions into the earthen water pot to violate his vows of purity.

Once, Sadguru Dharmanand Swami arrived at the village mandir. Mavjibhagat went to the mandir for darshan and humbly invited Swami to his house to prepare and accept meals (rasoi). While the sadhus were preparing food in a room, his wife obstructed the doorway and began hurling bitter words at them: “He drags these sadhus into our house from wherever he finds them! I will stand right here at the entrance; let me see how you step outside!” Mavjibhagat felt extremely embarrassed and distressed. To ensure that the holy sadhus would not have to fast, he held her by the arm and escorted her inside. Taking the raw food rations (sidhu), the sadhus accompanied Mavjibhagat to his farm (vadi). There, creating a makeshift hearth (mangalo), the sadhus began baking rotlas. The wife stormed into the farm as well and shouted at the sadhus: “You shaved-headed mendicants! You just wouldn’t leave Mavji alone, but I am leaving Mavji’s household forever!”

Seeing this discord in the devotee’s family, the benevolent and selfless Dharmanand Swami said to Mavjibhagat: “Go and bring your wife back. It is not right that our presence causes friction in your household. We shall depart from here.” Mavjibhagat then went and persuaded his wife to return home, while the sadhus went to another orchard to cook and take their meal.

With the passage of time, when Mavjibhagat reached the final moments of his earthly life, he joyfully proclaimed, “Shriji Maharaj has personally arrived to take me, and I am ascending to Akshardham!” Hearing this, his wife remarked, “I shall offer you the ritual waters of mourning for a month.” Mavjibhagat replied, “Offer your water to someone else! I have drunk enough of your water throughout this lifetime; now I am departing to Akshardham with Shri Hari!” Saying this, he discarded his mortal body and departed for the divine abode with Shriji Maharaj.

Mavjibhagat had a son named Panchabhai. Through the holy association of the sadhus, Panchabhai grew into a staunch satsangi. Since his mother was still averse to Satsang, she would intentionally fill the pots with unfiltered water (violating the satsang code of drinking only filtered water). From early childhood, Panchabhagat observed the disciplines of Satsang with unshakeable resolve. Whenever his mother brought unfiltered water or cooked contrary to the rules, he would smash the earthen water pots and break the cooking vessels. He sustained this uncompromising stance for days on end. Although deeply exasperated with her own child, she witnessed Panchabhagat upholding the moral vows (vartaman) of Satsang fearlessly and openly. Finally, one day, worn down by his unyielding conviction, she said to her son, “I will do whatever you say.” The boy firmly replied, “I will eat food cooked by your hands only if you become a true satsangi!” Thereupon, she traveled to Gadhpur (Gadhada), accepted the sacred vows (panch vartaman) from the revered female ascetics (sankhya-yogi women), and embraced Satsang wholeheartedly.
