Bhula Bhagat Guided in Brahmin Disguise and Sura Khachar Bearing the Weight of the Universe
One day, Bhula Bhagat, a simple-hearted farmer devotee from the village of Nandasan in the Dandhavya region, set out on foot to have the divine darshan of Shreehari. Guileless and completely innocent, he had unwavering faith in God. Devoid of any sense of geographic directions and unmindful of harsh weather, he carried neither provisions nor water. Journeying through the arid wilderness towards Kutch, he completely lost his way.
Recognizing the plight of His guileless devotee, omniscient Shreehari assumed the guise of a radiant Brahmin and appeared before him on the desert path. The Brahmin asked, “O devotee, where are you bound?” Bhula Bhagat replied, “Our Lord Bhagwan Swaminarayan is residing in Bhuj; I am walking to have His holy darshan.” The Brahmin kindly offered, “I too am journeying to Bhuj. Come along, I will guide you safely to the very abode where the Lord resides.”
Caring for his food, water, and overnight shelters throughout the arduous journey, the Brahmin safely escorted Bhula Bhagat to the house of Hirji Suthar in Bhuj. Pointing towards the entrance, the Brahmin said, “Bhagwan Swaminarayan resides within; go inside.” As Bhula Bhagat entered and prostrated at the feet of Shreeji Maharaj, the Brahmin outside vanished!
Shreehari inquired, “Bhula Bhagat, how did you manage to arrive here through such a perilous journey?” Bhula Bhagat explained, “Maharaj, a benevolent Brahmin met me outside Nandasan, cared for me like a mother, and guided me all the way here, but he has mysteriously disappeared!” Smiling compassionately, Shreeji Maharaj recounted every detail and night-halt of the journey, revealing, “Bhula Bhagat! That Brahmin was none other than Myself!” Overcome with tears of gratitude, Bhula Bhagat surrendered completely at the Lord’s lotus feet.
Later, Shreeji Maharaj proceeded from Bhuj to Mankuva, accompanied by attendant Naja Jogiya, Sura Khachar, and Kathi chieftains. Coming upon deep, loose sand dunes, Shreehari feigned exhaustion and said to Naja Jogiya, “We are tired of walking; crouch down so We may ride upon your shoulders for fifty paces.” Naja Jogiya joyfully obeyed, lifting the Lord onto his shoulders and striding briskly across the sand.
Shreehari then turned to Sura Khachar: “Sura Bapu! Now crouch so We may ride upon your shoulders.” Sura Khachar sat down, and Maharaj mounted his shoulders. At that very moment, Shreehari manifested the colossal weight of the entire cosmos (Triloki no bhaar)! Crushed by the unbearable divine weight, Sura Khachar could not even stand up and shrieked in desperation: “Bhanu Maharaj! I am dying! I am crushed!”
Shreehari stepped down and laughed, “Sura Bapu! Naja Jogiya carried Us sixty paces without complaint, while you began screaming the instant We sat down!” Panting for breath, Sura Khachar retorted wittily, “Maharaj! You sat upon me with the immense weight of the three worlds—how on earth could any mortal stand?!” Shreehari smiled delightfully and continued His joyous pastimes towards Natha Suthar’s home in Mankuva.
