The Cleanliness and Devotion of Jetha Koli of Tad Village
In the village of Tad, located in the Nagher region of Saurashtra, lived a devotee named Jetha Koli, who maintained the strict purity, hygiene, and disciplined conduct akin to that of an orthodox Brahmin.
Once, a government officer set out to inspect the village farmlands (seem). Spotting an exceptionally well-maintained plow and fine oxen working in the fields from a distance, he asked, “Whose plow is that over there?” A village Patel replied, “Sir, that belongs to Jetha Bhagat Koli.” In those days, only wealthy, prosperous landlords owned fine oxen, whereas poor folks from underprivileged communities could seldom afford a pair of oxen. Astonished, the officer inquired, “Does a Koli own such oxen?” The Patel responded, “Sir, no one in our entire village possesses oxen as splendid as his!”
Curious, the officer approached Jetha Koli and began conversing with him. Gazing around, the officer noticed something resting in the shade of a jujube (bordi) tree and asked, “What is kept over there beneath that berry bush?” Jetha respectfully answered, “Sir, that is a bhambhali (a covered jug for drinking water). I have placed a small bowl on top of it as a lid so that crows do not perch on it and soil the water.” Hearing this, the officer asked further, “Then why have you kept that other lota (water pot) so far away from it?” Jetha replied with utmost naturalness, “Sir, if one needs to answer the call of nature, water is required for cleansing! Hence, the vessel used for ablution is kept far away, and the drinking water vessel is kept strictly separate!” Beholding such meticulous cleanliness, hygiene, and ritual purity (shuchita) from a humble farmer, the officer was thoroughly amazed.
Praising Jetha’s virtue, the village Patel added, “Sir! In this entire village, Jetha is the solitary soul who strictly observes every Ekadashi fast. No one commands such honor, wholesome sustenance, and spotless reputation as he does! His firm spiritual discipline (niyam) is that on the tenth day (Dashami) of every lunar fortnight, he walks to the Swaminarayan temple in Una. There, he observes the holy Ekadashi fast, spends the day immersed in divine chanting and prayer, breaks his fast (parana) on the twelfth day (Dwadashi), and only then returns home. Every morning, he wakes up early, bathes, performs his daily puja and prayers, applies the sacred tilak-chandlo on his forehead, and dresses in pristine, clean white attire.”
Such was the transformative power of Bhagwan Swaminarayan’s Satsang, which elevated devotees from all walks of life to the highest standards of morality, spiritual purity, and devotion.
