Sura Khachar’s Humorous Tale: The Bard of Sayla, Jiva Khachar’s Mojadi, and the Feast
On one occasion, Shreeji Maharaj was gracing an assembly in the court of Dada Khachar in Gadhada. His intimate friend and devotee, Sura Khachar, arrived, offered humble prostrations, and sat before Him. Smiling delightfully, Shreehari said, “Sura Bapu! Share some light-hearted humor to gladden the hearts of the assembly.”
Sura Khachar wittily introduced a peculiar riddle: “Maharaj! There are certain villages whose very name brings misfortune—the moment one speaks their name, far from receiving a morsel of grain, one ends up being struck on the face with shoes!” Intrigued by this humorous premise, Shreeji Maharaj leaned against His bolster and asked, “Sura Bapu! Which strange village is that? Pray tell us the full story.”
The entire assembly listened eagerly as Sura Khachar narrated: “Maharaj! Today an itinerant bard (Gadhvi) arrived at the porch of Jiva Khachar. Jiva Khachar asked, ‘Gadhvi, where do you hail from?’ The bard hesitated, ‘Bapu, it is better not to name my village; there is a proverb that uttering its name leaves one starving and brings blows to one’s mouth!’ Jiva Khachar took pride in his hospitality and insisted, ‘Nonsense! In my court food is abundant; tell me the name!’ Reluctantly, the bard answered, ‘Bapu, I come from the village of Sayla.’
Determined to disprove the superstition, Jiva Khachar summoned his cook, a barber named Sango, and commanded: ‘Prepare a lavish feast for this bard—serve him rich wheat rotlis soaked in ghee, along with milk, rice, and fine sugar!’ Jiva Khachar then retired for his afternoon nap. The bard thought that cooking would take time, so he stepped out to explore Gadhada town.
In the meantime, another bearded bard happened to arrive and sat at the porch. Soon, Sango the cook emerged and called out, ‘Where is the Gadhvi? Come inside for lunch!’ Assuming it was general hospitality, the second bard entered, relished the luxurious meal to his heart’s content, and quietly departed!
Meanwhile, the original bard from Sayla returned from his walk and lay down on the veranda, patiently waiting to be called. At 4 PM, Jiva Khachar woke up, saw the hungry bard still lying there, and asked cheerfully, ‘Well, Gadhvi! Did you enjoy a hearty feast?’ The bard lamented sorrowfully, ‘Bapu, what feast? My stomach is churning with famished cries!’
Furious, Jiva Khachar summoned Sango: ‘Did you not feed this bard as ordered?’ Sango protested, ‘Bapu, I served him the rich rotlis, milk, and sugar as instructed!’ The bard cried, ‘Sango, look closely, whom did you feed?’ Sango shaded his eyes, inspected the bard’s face, and stammered, ‘Bapu! The man I fed had a long flowing beard; this one is clean-shaven!’
Enraged at the bungle, Jiva Khachar pulled off his pointed leather shoe (mojadi) and hurled it furiously at Sango! Sango swiftly ducked, and the heavy shoe flew through the air and struck the Sayla bard squarely on the mouth! Rubbing his bruised jaw, the bard exclaimed with a sigh of relief: ‘Ah! At last the auspicious omen has taken place! Now my teeth shall surely receive some food! Did I not tell you earlier that uttering Sayla’s name brings shoes to the face?’
Hearing Sura Khachar’s hilarious recital, Shreeji Maharaj burst into uncontrollable divine laughter. The entire assembly of sadhus and devotees echoed with joyous mirth. Through such innocent and endearing humor, the Supreme Lord filled the hearts of His devotees with unbounded spiritual joy.
