King Ranbahadur of Nepal and Nilkanth Varni

Maharaja Shri Prithvi Narayan Shah of Nepal is revered as the unifier of Nepal, akin to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the architect of united India. He brought together the fragmented Kathmandu Valley and eastern Nepal under one rule, laying the foundation of modern Greater Nepal.

Prithvi Narayan Shah was born into a very poor Gorkha family to his father, Narbhupal Shah. Born with extraordinary royal destiny, this child was blessed by the causeless divine grace of the great master Yogi Matsyendranath (Machhandarnath).

Once, while young Prithvi was wandering near a rest house on the outskirts of the village, an ascetic avadhuta arrived. His attire was aghori-like, which would ordinarily evoke dread or disgust in an onlooker. Despite feeling frightened, young Prithvi bowed humbly to the yogi. The aghori yogi said to him, “Son! I am very hungry and thirsty. Please bring me some curd (yogurt).” Like an obedient and pure-hearted child, Prithvi rushed home immediately and brought back some fresh curd. The yogi drank the curd. Then, gesturing toward Prithvi, the yogi said, “Son, cup your hands together.” Without any inkling of what the yogi intended to do, young Prithvi cupped his hands. The yogi took a mouthful of curd, spat it out into Prithvi’s cupped hands, and commanded, “Drink this curd!” Prithvi could not refuse outright, but the unconventional act nauseated him. He drank a small sip and poured the rest onto the ground.

Smiling gently, the yogi said, “As God wills! Son Prithvi! Had you drunk all of this curd, you would have become the sovereign emperor of the entire world. But because you consumed only a portion of this consecrated grace (prasad) and spilt the remainder on the ground, you shall not rule the whole earth. Nevertheless, you shall certainly become the Maharaja of Nepal. Your descendants shall rule the land of Nepal for eleven generations, after which your lineage shall come to an end.” That ascetic yogi was none other than the great siddha Matsyendranath himself.

In time, young Prithvi grew up to become the king of Kathmandu. He founded the Gorkha Kingdom, united numerous scattered principalities, and laid the cornerstone of Greater Nepal. His territory expanded from eastern Nepal all the way to Sikkim. He reigned from 1743 to 1775 CE. True to the prophecy and boon bestowed by Yogi Matsyendranath, his royal dynasty governed Nepal for exactly eleven generations, until in 2001 CE, the royal family met a tragic end when the crown prince opened fire and assassinated the members of his own family.

Maharaja Prithvi Narayan Shah’s grandson was King Ranbahadur Shah. King Ranbahadur had the divine fortune of meeting Supreme Lord Shri Swaminarayan during His ascetic forest travels (van-vicharan) in the divine guise of Nilkanth Varni. When young ascetic Nilkanth Varni arrived in Kathmandu, Nepal, during His pilgrim journey, Ranbahadur Shah was reigning as king. King Ranbahadur suffered from a severe and incurable abdominal ailment. In his desperation to find relief, he summoned numerous physicians, vaidyas, sadhus, and learned scholars. However, if anyone failed to cure his pain, the tyrannical king would cruelly throw them into prison.

The king of that realm suffered acute abdominal torment, which yielded to no remedy..!
Whenever an ascetic arrived wearing holy robes, the king would serve him lavishly..!
Then, paying formal homage, the king would say: “God Himself dwells within holy robes…!”
“Therefore, cure this affliction of mine, or else prepare to enter the dungeon!”
In this manner, he had imprisoned five hundred sadhus, refusing to let any of them go..!

When young Lord Nilkanth Varni arrived in Kathmandu, several wandering ascetics warned Him against entering the city, recounting the king’s cruel deeds. Nilkanth Varni fearlessly declared, “A true sadhu never fears anything in this world.” With serene dignity, Nilkanth entered the city accompanied by several sadhus. Hearing of the arrival of a radiant young ascetic, the king’s guards promptly escorted Him to the royal court. Seeing the king’s suffering, Nilkanth Varni addressed him in sweet, serene, and sublime words: “Every human being and living creature must inevitably undergo the fruits of their past karma (prarabdha). No occult spells, alchemy, or force can alter it, for none can transgress the universal laws of God. Therefore, whenever distress arises, one should accept it with fortitude as the unfolding of destiny, pray sincerely to God, and endure it patiently. By acting willfully and imprisoning innocent mendicants, you are only compounding your misery, binding yourself to new sinful karmas, and prolonging your suffering.” Beholding Nilkanth Varni’s captivating divine beauty, radiant aura, and courageous, enlightening words, the king realized his folly. Repenting deeply for his past atrocities, he humbly begged for forgiveness and prayed to be relieved of his unbearable agony.

Through sincere devotion, Shri Hari mitigates suffering, turning the agony of a spear into the mere prick of a needle..!
When one stubbornly demands from God, the Lord never removes his distress!
God is never moved by coercion or self-harm, nor is He ever intimidated by threats!
Whether one harms oneself or torments others, God never delivers such a soul from pain!

Moved with divine compassion, Nilkanth Varni asked for fresh water. Placing the water in the king’s cupped palms, He had him take a sacred resolution and instructed him to drink it. The king drank the consecrated water with profound faith and devotion. Instantly, its divine effect became manifest, and the agonizing pain that had tormented him for years vanished completely! Overwhelmed with gratitude and devotion for Nilkanth Varni, the king offered any boon or reward He desired. Nilkanth Varni smiled gently and replied, “If you truly wish to serve Us and find peace, immediately release all the innocent sadhus, sants, and scholars whom you have held captive in your dungeons. That is the only offering We ask of you.” The king immediately complied and freed all five hundred imprisoned sadhus and scholars. In this way, Nilkanth Varni eradicated the king’s superstitious coercion and stubborn reliance on forced divine miracles. Filled with boundless veneration, King Ranbahadur earnestly pleaded with Nilkanth Varni to reside permanently in his kingdom. But the detached, selfless young ascetic Nilkanth Varni, ever immersed in His divine mission, departed peacefully toward Tibet and Assam.
