Lavji Vipra of Mankuva and the Divine Teachings of Shriji Maharaj

Once, Shri Hari graced the village of Mankuva in Kutch, residing at the home of Suthar Nathabhai. The members of Natha Sutar’s family were deeply loving and dedicated devotees, who daily prepared delicious thal and served it to Shri Hari with profound devotion. One day, Dahibai, the wife of Aboti Brahmin Lavji Vipra from the same village, extended a loving invitation to Shri Hari to partake of thal at their home. At midday, Shri Hari arrived at their house. Dahibai and Lavji Vipra had lovingly spread a clean seat on the veranda (osari) and arranged the meal. Shriji Maharaj took His seat upon the platform.

At that moment, Shri Hari cast His glance toward their inner chamber (orda). To His astonishment, the room was filled with numerous wooden and iron figurines smeared with vermilion (sindoor)—superstitious deities and spirits (devla). Seeing them, Shri Hari said, “Lavji, you already have so many petty deities housed here; what need do you have of Us? Therefore, We shall not dine at your home; We shall return to Our residence.”

Hearing this, Dahibai’s husband, Lavji Vipra, pleaded with folded hands, “O Maharaj! The thal is prepared. Why are You turning back without partaking of food?”
Shri Hari replied firmly, “We cannot abide in the presence of such hypocrisy and superstition. Either keep Us, or keep all these worshipped figurines and spirits. You cannot have both.”

Humbled, Lavji submitted, “O Maharaj! I shall do exactly as You command.”
Shri Hari then instructed him, “First, shave off this long matted hair (jata) and topknot you have grown. Renounce all sorcery, occult spells (jantra-mantra), deceptive theatrics, and spirit possession (dhunvu). From this day forth, all your spells are rendered utterly powerless; none of your trickery shall ever work again. Bundle up all these figurines, immerse them into the waters of the lake, and only then shall We partake of your meal.”

Lavji Vipra immediately gathered all the figurines into a bundle, hurried to the village lake, and immersed them in the water. Having purged his home of superstition, he served the thal to Shri Hari. After dining, Shri Hari returned to His lodging. Soon after, Lavji Vipra also ate and came before Shri Hari. Calling a barber, he shaved off his long matted hair, bathed, and received the sacred vows (vartaman) of Satsang from Shri Hari’s lotus hands. From that auspicious day onward, he became a staunch and devoted follower of Shri Hari.

During His stay in Mankuva, Shriji Maharaj went daily to bathe in Vichendrasar Lake, situated to the west of the village. Along the way, at a Marwadi devotee’s orchard (vadi), He would sit upon the high cliff overlooking the riverbed. One day, arriving there with the sadhus, Shri Hari playfully proposed, “Come, let us all jump from this cliff!” Saying so, the Lord leaped first, landing twelve to thirteen cubits (haath) away. Then all the sadhus and parshads jumped one after another, but none could match the distance of Shri Hari’s leap.

Observing this friendly contest, Shriji Maharaj joked with divine laughter, “None of you could jump as far as Us! We have leaped the farthest!”
The santos and devotees reverently replied, “O Maharaj! You are the greatest of all, so the leap of the great is naturally great, while the leap of the small remains modest.” Hearing their loving answer, Shri Hari smiled with delight. On the bank of that lake, where an ornamental memorial dome (chhatri) stands today, Maharaj sat and delivered profound spiritual discourses (gnan-varta) for hours. Later, walking to the Marwadi’s orchard, He seated Himself on an elevated seat beneath the dangling roots of the Bhutiyo Vad (ancient banyan tree), surrounded by an assembly of santos and haribhaktas.

After imparting sublime spiritual wisdom, Shri Hari announced, “Now let us head back to the village.” As they walked through the threshing floor (khalo) of Mithi Vadi, a farmer named Vishram Kanbi approached and pleaded, “O Maharaj! My son Devshi constantly wanders around with You; please do not make him a sadhu!”
Shri Hari chuckled and reassured him with humor, “Do not worry! For seven generations, We shall not initiate anyone from your family into sainthood!” Smiling and joking, the Lord returned to Natha Sutar’s house.

At that time, Natha Sutar’s daughter, Devbai, was married into a family in the village of Vithon. Her father-in-law had come to escort her back to her marital home, but Devbai adamantly refused, saying, “I will not go to my in-laws.”
Natha Sutar brought the dilemma before Shri Hari. Shri Hari called Devbai’s father-in-law and suggested, “This lady refuses to return; therefore, arrange another marriage for your son. Whatever expenses are incurred, We shall bear them.”
However, the father-in-law stubbornly insisted, “No, we will only take our daughter-in-law with us.”
Shri Hari warned him, “If you take her away against her will, your lineage will not continue through her.” Even so, the carpenter remained obstinate, repeating, “We shall take her nonetheless.”

Seeing his stubbornness, Shri Hari gently advised Devbai, “Go to your in-laws.”
Devbai replied with devotion, “If You accompany me there, only then will I go.”
Shri Hari promised, “We shall surely come.”
The following morning, after partaking of thal, Shri Hari boarded an ox-cart, and Devbai sat in another. Together they traveled to her in-laws’ village of Vithon. Shri Hari dined there and stayed for five days, showering divine joy upon the devotees, before returning to Mankuva to reside once again at Natha Sutar’s home.
