Jetha Maniya of Khopala: Fearless Faith with Serpents, Humble Seva, and Devotion to Sadhus
In the renowned Satsang village of Khopala resided Muktaraj Jetha Maniya, an exceptionally devoted and unwavering follower of Bhagwan Swaminarayan. He possessed absolute conviction that Shreehari alone is the supreme doer of all actions (Sarvakartaharta), and without His divine will, not even a blade of grass can stir in the cosmos.
On one occasion, Jetha Bhagat was seated with villagers in the village square (chora). Suddenly, a large venomous serpent slithered into their midst. Terrified by the sight, everyone scrambled and ran in panic. Jetha Bhagat remained completely composed and called out, “Brothers! Why do you flee? Biting is not in the hands of the serpent; it rests entirely in the hands of my beloved Lord Swaminarayan!” Saying this, he remained seated fearlessly. The serpent crawled over his legs onto his bare shoulders, struck its fangs at his navel two or three times, and peacefully slithered away; yet Jetha Bhagat was neither shaken nor harmed by any poison! Such was his monumental faith in divine protection.
At another time, when his buffaloes did not return from grazing in the evening, his wife sent word to the mandir inquiring about them. Jetha Bhagat sent back a calm reply from the mandir: “Go tell her that I returned them to their rightful Owner! Gopinathji Maharaj Himself visited my field and expressed the need for milk for the visiting sadhus, so I surrendered the buffaloes to the Gadhada temple.” Such was his detached surrender of worldly possessions.
During another visit to Gadhada, devotees and attendants were laboriously shifting enormous grain storage bins (kothis) in the south-facing room. Arriving for darshan, Jetha Maniya immediately joined the strenuous physical seva without hesitation. Pleased by his selfless devotion, Shreeji Maharaj embraced him warmly, placed His sanctifying hand upon his head, and had Mulji Brahmachari fetch four large churma ladus. Maharaj fed them to Jetha Bhagat with His own divine hands. Recognizing the rare divinity of this prasad, Jetha Bhagat consumed them on the spot and promptly resumed shifting the heavy grain bins.
During a scorching summer, Sadguru Anandanand Swami arrived in Khopala. The heat of Vaishakh was stifling, and the village mandir had little ventilation. Swami casually remarked, “Jetha! The heat is intense; it would be wonderful if a cool breeze could enter.” Jetha Bhagat responded, “Swami! Please go for your bath at the well, and I will arrange the breeze.” While Swami was bathing, Jetha Bhagat took tools and knocked a large opening (bakoru) directly through the back wall of the mandir!
Upon returning from his bath, Swami was astonished to see the gaping window in the wall and asked, “Bhagat! What have you done?” Jetha Bhagat innocently replied, “Swami, you desired cool air. As long as you stay, the breeze will flow freely; after you depart, I will brick the wall back up!” Deeply moved by Jetha Bhagat’s pure, uncalculating love for holy sadhus, Sadguru Anandanand Swami showered him with profound spiritual blessings.
