Three Brothers at the Merai Well, Lakhu’s Half Rotlo, and Protection of the Harvest

In the region of Kutch, Shreehari decided to travel from Mankuva to the agricultural orchards of Rampur. Handing over His mare to Natha Bhagat, Maharaj sent him back to Mankuva and continued the journey on foot. Arriving at the Merai Vadi in the late afternoon, Shreehari stood near the trough of an irrigation well where water was being drawn.

Three Kanbi brothers—Bhimji, Khimji, and the youngest, Lakhu (Lakshman)—were operating the water-lift (kosh). Approaching the well dressed in the attire of a simple Brahmachari, Shreehari said, “I am feeling exceedingly hungry; please give Me a piece of rotlo to eat.” The two elder brothers replied bluntly, “O Bawa! We finished our meals at noon and are currently operating the well. Where can we fetch rotlo for you now?”

Omniscient Shreehari smiled and pointed out, “Across in the entrance porch, inside the pot hanging from the ceiling rope (chhinku), there is bread kept for dinner. Please offer Me half of that rotlo.” The elder brothers refused, but Lakhu’s heart melted with devotional compassion. Lakhu insisted that turning away a hungry holy renunciant was improper. He promptly retrieved the half rotlo from the pot and lovingly placed it into the sacred hands of the Brahmachari.

Shreehari relished the offering with great delight. Moments later, a divine miracle unfolded. The Brahmachari who had been standing beside the water trough was suddenly seen seated atop a tall tamarind tree! Astonished by this supernatural spectacle, the elder brothers stood in awe. When Lakhu approached the well, the Brahmachari affectionately said, “O Patel! You have satisfied My hunger. Ask for whatever boon you desire, and I shall bestow it upon you.”

Lakshman humbly replied, “Maharaj, we worship our village Mahadev and Lord Bileshwar Mahadev located three miles away. By their grace, we have sufficient food, clothing, and family well-being. What more mundane wealth could I ask from you?” Immensely pleased by his pure detachment, Shreehari declared, “Lakshman! I grant you ultimate spiritual liberation (Atyantik Kalyan). Furthermore, for seven generations in your lineage, exalted liberated souls (muktas) shall take birth, and your entire family shall worship Me with pure devotion!” Bestowing this magnificent benediction, Shreehari proceeded westward towards Tera and Kalatalav.

Twenty days later, Shreehari revisited the orchard and cautioned Lakhu, “Lakshman! Your chasatiyo (short-duration crop) is fully ripened. Harvest it immediately without delay, for torrential unseasonal rains are imminent. If left unharvested, the entire yield will rot.”

Lakhu approached the orchard proprietor, a Garasiya landlord, who initially hesitated since others had not yet harvested. Unshaken in his trust in the Brahmachari’s words, Lakhu agreed upon a fixed grain settlement, harvested his crop overnight, and safely stored it in the barn. Soon after, dark clouds gathered and torrential downpours flooded the fields. Every other farmer’s unharvested crop in the vicinity was completely ruined by the deluge, while Lakhu Bhagat’s harvest remained entirely dry and protected. Thus, Shreehari eternally safeguards and blesses those who offer food with a sincere, loving heart.
