Vankiya Darbar Alavala Balmukunddasji Swami

Following the consecration of the new temple in Vankiya, Sadguru Balmukunddasji Swami resided there for some days. The feared local chieftain, Darbar Alavala, noticing the tranquil quietude of the temple during afternoon hours, began riding his mare right into the shrine compound, having his servant set up a cot so he could snore away in luxury.

Observing this irreverence, the fearless Balmukunddasji Swami confronted him: “Darbar! This is Thakorji’s holy temple, not your royal court! Here, one must practice devotion, not indulge in slumber. Riding your horse directly into God’s sanctuary is a gross violation of sacred decorum!” Enraged, the chieftain roared: “Do you know who I am? I am Darbar Alavala of this domain!” Swami looked him straight in the eye: “We recognize only our Ishtadev Swaminarayan and fear none other! Speaking the righteous truth is our ascetic duty.”

Furious at being rebuked, the chieftain walked outside and spitefully fired a bullet into the left front leg of an elephant painted upon the temple wall. Within days, his prized mare developed an agonizing, untreatable disease in her exact left front leg! When physicians failed, an astrologer divined that a deity had been gravely offended. Realizing his sin, Darbar Alavala rushed to the mandir, begged forgiveness from Thakorji and Balmukunddas Swami, and surrendered his arrogance, becoming a dedicated Satsangi.
