Shripur Kamleshwar Math Nilkanth Varni Lion
In the foothills of the Himalayas, outside the sacred township of Shripur, young yogic ascetic Nilkanth Varni sat serenely in lotus posture upon the raised veranda of the historic Kamleshwar Math. Observing His radiant demeanor at dusk, the temple mahant, Nirmalgiri, warned: “O Brahmachari! Come inside the monastery or proceed to the town; ferocious lions roam this forest at night and will tear You to pieces!”
Nilkanth Varni smiled with tranquil majesty: “Mahantji! Can hiding inside a room evade destined death? Men tie protective amulets and kings employ royal physicians, yet when the thread of lifespan snaps, nothing can mend it. Early or late, physical death is inevitable; why should one harbor fear? We shall rest right here upon this open veranda.”
At midnight, a deafening lion’s roar reverberated through the wilderness, shaking the ashram. Trembling with dread, the Mahant and his disciples peered through a window slit, expecting the delicate young monk to have been devoured. Instead, they beheld an astounding sight: like a docile cow standing before a gentle cowherd, the ferocious lion sat humbly with its head bowed at Nilkanth Varni’s lotus feet! At daybreak, as Varni walked toward the river to bathe, the lion followed obediently behind Him like a calf before melting into the dense forest.
Witnessing this supernatural mastery, Mahant Nirmalgiri fell prostrate at Varni’s feet, pleading: “O Divine Ascetic! Remain here permanently; I will install You as the supreme pontiff of this monastery with an annual royal revenue of one hundred thousand rupees!” Varni declined with sublime detachment: “Mahantji! Had We harbored any desire for wealth, why would We have renounced Our household? That which has been vomited out is never consumed again; having renounced worldly bondage, Our mission is to traverse pilgrim shrines and redeem the souls of the cosmos!”
