The Account of Becharbhatt and Durlabhram of Mahemdavad
Shriji Maharaj was seated upon a high platform in the Gyanbaug at Vadtal, bestowing divine bliss upon His devotees. Haribhaktas arrived from distant regions, and Shri Hari warmly enquired about everyone’s wellbeing. Some loving devotees anointed the Lord’s divine form with fragrant perfumes (attar), some offered cooling sandalwood paste (chandan) upon His forehead, while others adorned Him with exquisite garlands, wristlets, and ornaments made of fresh roses, mogra, and jasmine.
Presently, the pilgrim congregation (sangh) from the village of Mahemdavad arrived to offer their devotion. All the devotees performed heartfelt worship. Thereafter, Shri Hari lovingly enquired, “Devotees, why do we not see our Becharbhatt and Durlabhram? Where are they?” The devotees hesitated to answer. At last, one devotee gathered courage and submitted, “Maharaj, for some time now, an unfortunate rift has arisen between the two. As a result, if Becharbhatt attends the assembly, Durlabhram stays away; and if Durlabhram comes, Becharbhatt leaves.”
Shri Hari said with gentle surprise, “Oh! But the two of them shared such deep affection and unity!” The pilgrims replied, “Maharaj, indeed they were inseparable friends. Neither could spend a single day without the other. They visited each other’s homes, conducted their worldly affairs together, attended spiritual assemblies side by side, and sang devotional kirtans together in melodious unison. What knot has suddenly tied their hearts, even we cannot comprehend. Now the situation has deteriorated so much that if Becharbhatt is chanting his rosary in the mandir and Durlabhram enters the courtyard, Becharbhatt immediately puts on his turban and departs; and if Becharbhatt arrives, Durlabhram walks away. When given a chance, they even speak ill of one another.”
Hearing this, Shri Hari paused in contemplation and immediately resolved to mend their bond. Mounting His swift mare, Manki, and accompanied by a few devotees, He set out directly for Mahemdavad. Upon arriving, the Lord summoned Becharbhatt and spoke to him with boundless love: “Becharbhai, we have come here solely to resolve this cold silence between you and Durlabhram. It displeases us greatly when devotees of God harbor discord (kusamp) amongst themselves. Therefore, discard all animosity; in that alone lies our divine pleasure (rajipo).”
Hearing Shri Hari’s compassionate counsel, Becharbhai folded his hands with deep humility and spoke with tearful devotion: “Maharaj! You are the Supreme Lord, my revered Ishtadev. I am ready to do whatever You command. If You bid me to do so, I will bow at Durlabhram’s feet, place his shoes upon my head, and seek his forgiveness with a blade of grass between my teeth. My only desire is to please You in every possible way.”
Pleased with the egoless humility (nirmanipanu) of this noble devotee, Shri Hari then called Durlabhram. Durlabhram was an influential, respected devotee in Mahemdavad. Maharaj seated him nearby and lovingly advised him, “Durlabhram, wash away the dark stain of this animosity. Becharbhai is willing to do whatever we command—even to pick up your shoes at our word. Therefore, you too must let go of this grievance, take his turban reverently in your hands, and greet him with ‘Jai Swaminarayan’.”
Durlabhram, however, hesitated. Instead of answering, he began scratching the earth with his foot. Bound by stubborn ego and pride (maan), his agitation grew. Negative thoughts clouded his judgment, and he retorted, “Maharaj, what have I to do with Bechar? I can live independently as I please; why should I care about him? No, Maharaj, bid me to do anything else and I shall obey, but this I cannot do. I will not reconcile with Bechar.” Shri Hari reasoned with him persistently, but like an unyielding, obstinate horse, Durlabhram refused to budge. Gripped by false prestige, the Brahmin turned a deaf ear to the supreme counsel of God Himself.
Then, Shri Hari’s countenance assumed a stern expression. He said firmly: “Durlabhram, today you refuse to heed our words. Becharbhai is willing to carry your shoes, yet blinded by pride, you feel ashamed to hold his turban. But remember this well: a day shall surely come when you will have to take off your own turban and prostrate at his feet!” With these prophetic words, Shri Hari mounted the swift Manki and departed from Mahemdavad for Vadtal. Galloping faster than a falling shooting star, Manki carried the Lord back to Vadtal in no time.
Durlabhram was indeed a devoted soul with firm faith and regular devotional practices, yet his unbending pride had blinded him to the Lord’s divine command. In time, the respect other devotees held for him also began to wane.
Eventually, an occasion arose that tested his resolve. Durlabhram’s son came of age, and elaborate preparations were made for his wedding. A marriage party (jaan) was scheduled to travel to the bride’s village. Everything was in place, but unexpectedly, all his relatives and community members took a united stand and declared unequivocally: “Durlabhram, we will accompany the wedding procession only if Becharbhai joins; otherwise, none of us will come.” When Durlabhram hesitated, the relatives responded bluntly: “In that case, you may take your son and conduct the wedding all by yourself!”
Faced with overwhelming social pressure and the imminent collapse of his family’s reputation, Durlabhram was brought to his knees. To salvage his honor, his rigid ego finally broke. He walked straight to Becharbhai’s house, removed his turban, placed it on the floor, and fell at Becharbhai’s feet. In tears, he pleaded, “Bechar! Today my dignity is entirely in your hands. My son is getting married. If you do not join the procession, no one will come. Please forget the past and help me see this wedding through!”
The noble devotee Becharbhai immediately lifted Durlabhram up and embraced him warmly. “Durlabhram,” he said with genuine warmth, “from the very moment Maharaj commanded us, I wiped away all bitterness against you from my heart. There is no grudge in my mind whatsoever. But my dear brother, had you yielded only a little when Maharaj Himself came to your doorstep, how immense would have been His divine grace and pleasure!” Durlabhram was overcome with remorse: “Becharbhai, I am filled with profound regret for defying Maharaj’s wish. Had I obeyed Him then, this humiliating ordeal would never have occurred. Maharaj’s prophecy has proven true to the very letter.”
Tears of joy washed away all remnants of ill feeling. Becharbhai smiled and said, “Come, let us celebrate! I am ready to join the procession; your son is just like my own son.” The wedding took place with great joy and celebration.
When news of their joyful reconciliation reached Shri Hari, the ocean of compassion was deeply pleased. Devotees remarked, “Maharaj, how strange is the stubborn nature of the soul (jiva)! He would not unite at Your divine command, yet circumstance forced him to surrender before society. Those who will not bend to wisdom are inevitably bent by defeat.” Shri Hari replied with a compassionate smile, “Such is the nature of the jiva; it falters easily. Yet both are our cherished devotees. They were momentarily deluded by the veil of Maya. Now they will sing devotional bhajans together, and both their souls shall attain supreme spiritual upliftment.”
Remembering these two exemplary devotees, Sadguru Nishkulanand Swami wrote in the Shri Bhaktachintamani (Prakaran 121, Verse 16):
Mota bhakta chhe Me’mdavad, bhajya Harine taji upadhi..!!
Dvij bhakta kahiye Dhaneshwar, Durlabhram ne bhakta Bechar..!!
