Kavishwar Dalpatram Forbes Tilak Chandlo

Kavishwar Dalpatram, the towering pioneer of modern Gujarati literature, was an unshakeable and devoted disciple of Bhagwan Swaminarayan. In Surat, British civil servant Alexander Kinloch Forbes studied the Gujarati language under his tutelage. One Sunday, observing Dalpatram without his customary sectarian Vaishnava mark (tilak-chandlo) on his forehead, Forbes expressed deep concern, fearing Dalpatram had turned agnostic in his company. Dalpatram explained that having shaved late and bathed twice, he had missed reapplying it, but firmly assured: “Mr. Forbes! The roots of my faith delve as deep as the netherworlds (patal). For embracing this fellowship, I endured the painful renunciation of my orthodox father. Every single evening I walk miles to the mandir to absorb divine discourses—never fear for my steadfastness!”

Another renowned incident occurred in Borsad. Visiting the residence of Reverend Taylor and Mrs. Taylor alongside British dignitaries, Mrs. Taylor served hot tea. While other guests drank, Dalpatram placed his cup on the table untouched. When guests chided him that declining a hostess’s hospitality was discourteous and that tea was merely boiled water and leaves, Dalpatram delivered a legendary rebuttal: “Whether there is sin in the cup or not, if tomorrow someone asks me under God’s witness whether I consumed tea from a Christian woman’s hand, and I say ’no’, the grave sin of falsehood would stain my soul! Who among you shall bear that sin—Madam or Taylor Sahib? In the holy prayer ‘Nirvikalp Uttam Ati’, Sadguru Premanand Swami enshrined the core commandments of the Shikshapatri: ‘Bin khapto nahi khaat’ (Consume nothing contrary to righteous discipline). Having embraced the sanctity of this fellowship, I shall never violate its scriptural boundaries!”

Witnessing such fearless fidelity to moral discipline, the British officers were left spellbound in profound admiration.
