Sadguru Viraktanand Swami Gadhpur First Mahant

Sadguru Viraktanand Swami, the very first Mahant of the historic Gadhpur temple, was born in the village of Kalodra near the port of Khambhat in the Bhal region. Highly devout and naturally detached from worldly allurements from childhood, he was initiated as a sadhu by Bhagwan Swaminarayan, who aptly named him ‘Viraktanand’ (one who finds joy in detachment). Recognizing his administrative competence and spiritual virtues, Shreehari appointed him the first Mahant of Gadhpur mandir, instructing him to manage the shrine selflessly and serve visiting sadhus and devotees with utmost warmth.

Once, Shreeji Maharaj assumed the leela of physical illness. During this period, the ascetics and parshads attended to Him round the clock with tireless dedication. Deeply pleased by their selfless service, Shreehari summoned Mahant Viraktanand Swami to Akshar Ordi and gave an explicit command: “These sadhus and attendants have served Us with immense devotion. Therefore, prepare rich sugar laddoos soaked in abundant pure ghee on My behalf, and feed all the sadhus with heartfelt warmth.”

However, swayed by administrative frugality and an innate habit of penny-pinching, Viraktanand Swami substituted sugar with jaggery (gur) to save temple funds and served jaggery laddoos to the gathering. When Shreeji Maharaj learned that His direct command had been compromised for worldly thrift, He firmly reprimanded the Mahant, reminding him that obedience to the divine will (agna) supersedes all mundane calculations. Soon afterward, when coins requested to help a destitute Brahmin were also withheld due to his rigid nature, Shreehari relieved Viraktanand Swami of administrative management and appointed Sadguru Parmanand Swami as the Mahant. Swami had served as Mahant for ten years.

Realizing his grave mistake, Viraktanand Swami was overcome with deep remorse. Tears rolled down his cheeks as he repented: “Alas, I failed to honor the supreme command of Purushottam Narayan! Henceforth, every breath of mine shall be dedicated solely to pleasing Him.” Living the remainder of his life in absolute humility, obedience, and unbroken devotion, he ultimately attained Akshardham.
