Nani Kunkavav Ratanshi Snake Vasana

On one occasion, Sadguru Gunatitanand Swami and Sadguru Shukanand Swami visited the village of Nani Kunkavav during their spiritual tour. The local mandir was cramped and lacked adequate kitchen and storage facilities (bhandar). Gunatitanand Swami affectionately urged a neighboring resident, a wealthy yet penurious merchant named Ratanshi Thakar, “Ratanshi! Donate your backyard plot to the mandir so that visiting sadhus and pilgrims may have a proper dining kitchen.” Bound by acute greed, Ratanshi flatly refused, despite Shukanand Swami’s gentle counseling. Soon after, the sadhus departed, and years later, both Ratanshi and his wife passed away with intense worldly attachment (vasana) tied to that very property.

In Samvat 1940, Sadguru Mahapurushdas Swami arrived in Nani Kunkavav. Ratanshi’s devout brother, Narshibhai, happily gifted the required plot to expand the mandir, and construction commenced. During the noon recess, as Sadguru Rugnathcharandas was washing his hands, he discovered a menacing black cobra coiled atop the foundation wall with its hood spread wide! Rushing to Mahapurushdas Swami, he reported the serpent. Smiling knowingly, Swami remarked, “This is none other than Ratanshi Thakar! Because he disobeyed the great saint’s word and harbored deep possessiveness for this piece of land, he was reborn as a venomous snake in the very foundation!” Swami sprinkled sanctified water upon the serpent and had it carefully relocated to the forest. Seconds later, a female cobra emerged; Swami identified her as Ratanshi’s wife, who had met the same fate.

Highlighting the grave spiritual danger of defying God-realized saints and clinging to material possessions, Swami cautioned the congregation on the peril of worldly desires. By his boundless compassion, Sadguru Mahapurushdas Swami later liberated both departed souls from the serpent species and elevated them to Badrikashram, completing the mandir with grand devotion.
