Jetpur Dussehra Animal Sacrifice Abolished Ahimsa

On the eve of the auspicious festival of Dussehra (Vijayadashami), Bhagwan Swaminarayan arrived at the banks of the River Bhadar on the outskirts of Jetpur. Approaching the sacred bathing ghat where His spiritual preceptor, Sadguru Ramanand Swami, regularly bathed, Shreehari, Muktanand Swami, and Nishkulanand Swami placed their foreheads against the holy earth in deep reverence. The King of Jetpur accorded Shreehari an imperial reception, adorning the Lord with golden ceremonial garlands, royal brocades, and jewels, while decorating His prized mare Manki with pure-gold anklets.

On Dussehra day, following the worship of the sacred Shami tree, a grand royal procession marched through the streets. Deeply entrenched in the royal Kshatriya tradition was an ancient ritual: a fattened buffalo was led before Goddess Chamunda, and warrior princes competed to decapitate the animal with a single sword stroke to appease the deity. Dismounting from His elephant, Shreehari walked straight to the post where the helpless buffalo was tethered.

Addressing the King and the gathered Rajput rulers of Gondal, Anjar, and Lakhtar, Shreehari declared with commanding authority: “You claim to be Our disciples, yet you pride yourselves on butchering a defenseless, voiceless creature? No divine goddess or deity is ever pleased by the bloodshed of innocent animals; divine beings are satisfied solely by pure, sattvic oblations of clarified butter, milk, and sacred grains! If you truly wish to demonstrate martial valor, why not decapitate a ferocious wild tiger with a single stroke? Why slaughter an innocent herbivore chewing grass? A Rajput’s sword is consecrated to protect the weak and helpless, never to spill innocent blood!”

Shreehari then issued an unyielding ultimatum: “Because an innocent animal was slaughtered, We once renounced the water of Meghpur forever. If you sacrifice this innocent buffalo today, We shall renounce the food and water of Jetpur this very second and never set foot in this land again!”

Pierced to the soul by Shreehari’s divine authority, the King of Jetpur and all the assembly of Rajput chieftains cast their swords at Shreehari’s lotus feet. Weeping with remorse, they pledged solemnly: “O Lord! From this sacred moment forward, we swear that no innocent animal or bird shall ever be sacrificed before any deity in our lands; we shall strictly uphold the sacred vow of universal ahimsa (non-violence)!” Shreehari placed His blessing hands upon their heads, permanently eradicating the centuries-old bloody ritual from the kingdom.
