Dhoraji Bhima Kumbhar Raja Devaji Gondal

In Samvat 1856, King Devaji ascended the royal throne of Gondal, appointing his valiant younger brother Hathisinh as commander-in-chief. Both noble brothers were devoted disciples of Sadguru Ramanand Swami, and during Sahajanand Swami’s formal investiture in Jetpur in Samvat 1858, Hathisinh had presented a prized stallion to Shreehari.

On one occasion, Shreehari visited Dhoraji and stayed at the residence of Vakabhai Khimani. An anxious thought crossed Vakabhai’s mind: “If King Devaji arrives for darshan, the lavish royal protocol will impose a heavy financial burden upon me!” Discerning this mental calculation, omniscient Shreehari immediately rose and walked to the humble hut of an impoverished potter devotee, Bhima Kumbhar, seating Himself upon a rough burlap sack spread under the cooling shade of a peepal tree.

Meanwhile, King Devaji set forth in royal splendor accompanied by his Arab cavalry, state ministers, and royal drummers. Arriving near Khimani’s street, he learned that the Lord had moved to the potter’s dwelling. His prime minister cautioned, “Your Majesty! Royal decorum dictates that a sovereign monarch should never set foot in the humble home of a lowly potter!” King Devaji cast aside all ego and resolutely proclaimed: “Where the Supreme Lord resides, a sincere seeker never hesitates to step; We shall definitely proceed to meet our Lord; you may stay behind if you wish!”

King Devaji entered Bhima Kumbhar’s courtyard, humbly seated himself on the bare earth before Shreehari, and placed one hundred and fifty silver rupees at the Lord’s feet. When young Prince Nathuji grew thirsty, Shreehari personally offered sanctified water from His own earthenware cup and gifted the sacred vessel to the King. Shreehari then distributed all one hundred and fifty rupees to the impoverished potter Bhima. Later, upon the King’s loving invitation, Shreehari visited Gondal palace, bathing with His sadhus in the royal orchard well and sanctifying the grounds as an eternal pilgrimage site.
