વિરમગામના કાશી ભણીને આવેલા પ્રકાંડ પંડિતો દુર્લભરામ અને કામેશ્વરનો શાસ્ત્રાર્થ અહંકાર, શ્રીહરિનું અંતર્યામીપણું અને છાતીમાં ભૃગુંલાંછન દર્શનનું દિવ્ય ચરિત્ર.
વિરમગામના બે તેજસ્વી બ્રાહ્મણો દુર્લભરામ અને કામેશ્વર કાશી નગરીમાં બાર-બાર વર્ષ સુધી વેદ, વ્યાકરણ અને શાસ્ત્રોનો ગહન અભ્યાસ કરી વતનમાં પરત ફર્યા. ગુજરાતમાં આવી તેમણે સાંભળ્યું કે, “હાલ કાઠિયાવાડમાં સ્વામિનારાયણ નામે પ્રગટ ભગવાન બિરાજમાન છે, જેમની સામે મોટા મોટા પ્રકાંડ પંડિતો પણ શાસ્ત્રાર્થમાં પરાજિત થઈ જાય છે.” બંને પંડિતોને શાસ્ત્રજ્ઞાનનો ભારે અહંકાર હતો, તેથી તેમણે વિચાર્યું કે જો આપણે સ્વામિનારાયણને શાસ્ત્રાર્થમાં ન હરાવીએ તો આપણી આટલા વર્ષોની કાશીની વિદ્યા શા કામની?
આમ વિચારી બંને ગઢપુર આવ્યા. ઘેલા નદીએ સ્નાન-સંધ્યા કરતી વખતે તેમણે હજારો સંતો, કાઠી દરબારો અને વિદ્વાન બ્રાહ્મણોની વિશાળ ભીડ જોઈ. બંનેને થયું કે આટલી મોટી સભામાં જો આપણે હારી જઈશું તો ભારે અપમાન થશે! આથી તેમણે સંકલ્પ કર્યો કે જો સ્વામિનારાયણ આપણા મનની ગુપ્ત વાતો જાણી જાય તો જ તેમને સાચા ભગવાન માનવા. દુર્લભરામે સંકલ્પ કર્યો: “જો મને સુંદર ગાલીચો પાથરી પાસે બેસારે, હું કાશીમાં જે ભણ્યો છું તે કહી બતાવે અને સીધો-સામાન અપાવે તો સાચા!” જ્યારે કામેશ્વરે સંકલ્પ કર્યો: “ભૃગુ ઋષિએ નારાયણની છાતીમાં ચરણપ્રહાર કરેલો તેનું જે ‘ભૃગુંલાંછન’નું ચિહ્ન શાસ્ત્રોમાં વર્ણવેલું છે, તે જો તેઓ સામેથી પોતાની છાતી ખોલીને બતાવે તો જ હું તેમને સર્વાવતારી ભગવાન માનું!”
બંને પંડિતો દરબારગઢમાં આવી લિંબવૃક્ષ નીચે ઊભા રહ્યા. શ્રીહરિ સભામાં બિરાજમાન હતા. બંનેને જોતાં જ શ્રીહરિએ સાદ કર્યો, “દુર્લભરામ અને કામેશ્વર! અહીં અમારી સમીપે આવો!” શ્રીહરિએ પાર્ષદોને કહ્યું, “આ બંને કાશીના વિદ્વાન પંડિતો છે, એમના માટે ઉત્તમ ગાલીચો પાથરો.” ગાલીચો પાથરી બંનેને બેસારી પુષ્પહાર પહેરાવ્યા. શ્રીહરિએ પૂછ્યું, “તમે કાશીમાં બાર વર્ષ રહી વ્યાકરણની કૌમુદી અને તેની ત્રણ ટીકાઓ સુધીનો અભ્યાસ કરીને આવ્યા છો ને? લ્યો, અમે દાદા ખાચરને કહી તમને ઉત્તમ સીધો-સામાન અપાવીએ.” દુર્લભરામ તો આ અંતર્યામીપણું જોઈ સ્તબ્ધ થઈ ગયા!
ત્યારબાદ શ્રીહરિએ કામેશ્વર તરફ જોઈ હસતાં હસતાં કહ્યું, “ભૂદેવ! જુઓને, મને નાનપણમાં અહીં કંઈક વાગ્યું હતું!” એમ કહી શ્રીહરિએ પોતાની લીલા રંગની કિનખાબની ડગલીની કસ છોડી પોતાની છાતી ખોલીને બતાવી. કામેશ્વરે સાક્ષાત્ તેજોમય ‘ભૃગુંલાંછન’નું પવિત્ર ચિહ્ન પ્રત્યક્ષ જોયું! બંને પંડિતોનો શાસ્ત્રાર્થનો અહંકાર એક ક્ષણમાં ઓગળી ગયો. બંનેએ શ્રીહરિના ચરણોમાં સાષ્ટાંગ પ્રણામ કરી પ્રાર્થના કરી, “હે પ્રભુ! આપ સાક્ષાત્ પૂર્ણ પુરુષોત્તમ નારાયણ છો. અમને પંચવર્તમાન ધરાવી આપના આશ્રિત કરો.” શ્રીહરિએ બંને વિદ્વાનોને વર્તમાન ધરાવી દ્રઢ સત્સંગી બનાવ્યા.

वीरमगाम के दो तेजस्वी विद्वान ब्राह्मण दुर्लभराम और कामेश्वर काशी में बारह वर्षों तक वेद, व्याकरण और शास्त्रों का गहन अध्ययन कर स्वदेश लौटे। गुजरात आकर उन्होंने सुना कि काठियावाड़ में स्वामीनारायण नाम से साक्षात् ईश्वर विराजमान हैं, जिनसे बड़े-बड़े महापंडित भी शास्त्रार्थ में परास्त हो जाते हैं। विद्या के अहंकारवश दोनों ने सोचा कि हम गढपुर जाकर स्वामीनारायण को शास्त्रार्थ में पराजित करेंगे।
गढपुर आकर घेला नदी के तट पर उन्होंने हजारों संतों और भक्तों की विशाल उपस्थिति देखी। पराजय के भय से उन्होंने शास्त्रार्थ के स्थान पर अंतर्यामी परीक्षा लेने का निश्चय किया। दुर्लभराम ने संकल्प किया: “यदि वे मुझे उत्तम कालीन पर बैठाएँ, मेरे काशी के अध्ययन का विवरण बताएँ और सीधा-सामान दिलवाएँ तो वे ईश्वर हैं।” कामेश्वर ने संकल्प किया: “यदि वे अपनी छाती पर महर्षि भृगु के चरण-प्रहार का ‘भृगुलान्छन’ चिह्न स्वयं दिखाएँ, तभी मैं उन्हें सर्वोपरि परमात्मा मानूँगा।”
दरबारगढ़ पहुँचते ही श्रीहरि ने पुकारा, “दुर्लभराम और कामेश्वर! हमारे समीप आओ।” प्रभु ने उनके लिए उत्तम कालीन बिछवाया, पुष्पमाला पहनाई और कहा, “आप काशी में बारह वर्ष तक सिद्धांत कौमुदी और उसकी तीन टीकाओं का अध्ययन करके आए हैं। हम दादा खाचर से कहकर आपके लिए भोजन सामग्री की व्यवस्था करवाते हैं।” दुर्लभराम यह सुनकर विस्मित रह गए।
तदुपरांत श्रीहरि ने कामेश्वर से मुस्कुराकर कहा, “विप्रवर! देखिए, बाल्यावस्था में मुझे यहाँ चोट लगी थी।” प्रभु ने अपनी हरी किनखाब की अंगरखी खोलकर अपनी छाती पर साक्षात् दिव्य ‘भृगुलान्छन’ का दर्शन करा दिया! दोनों विद्वानों का पांडित्य-अभिमान क्षणभर में चूर-चूर हो गया। उन्होंने प्रभु चरणों में साष्टांग दंडवत कर क्षमायाचना की और पंचवर्तमान ग्रहण कर अनन्य सत्संगी बन गए।

Gadhpur Pandits Durlabhram Kameshwar Bhrigu Lanchan
Two brilliant Brahmin scholars from Viramgam, Durlabhram and Kameshwar, returned home after twelve rigorous years of mastering the Vedas, Sanskrit grammar, and philosophical scriptures in the holy city of Kashi (Varanasi). Upon returning to Gujarat, they learned that Bhagwan Swaminarayan was reigning supreme in Kathiawar, effortlessly defeating eminent pundits in scriptural debates. Puffed up with academic conceit, the two scholars resolved to travel to Gadhada and defeat Swaminarayan in public debate.
Arriving at Gadhpur, they beheld thousands of disciplined sadhus, noble Kathi rulers, and learned scholars by the banks of the River Ghela. Apprehensive that a public defeat would ruin their reputation, they decided to test His divine omniscience instead. Durlabhram mentally resolved: “If He invites me warmly, spreads a rich carpet for me to sit on, accurately reveals my exact studies in Kashi, and provides full provisions, I shall accept Him as divine.” Kameshwar formulated an even more esoteric condition: “In the sacred scriptures, Lord Vishnu bears the sacred footmark of Sage Bhrigu (Bhrigu-lanchan) upon His divine chest; if Swaminarayan opens His robe and reveals this mark unprompted, I shall surrender to Him as the Supreme God.”
Entering the royal court, they stood under the sacred neem tree. Spotting them immediately, Shreehari called out, “Durlabhram and Kameshwar! Come, sit beside Us!” Turning to His attendants, Shreehari ordered, “These two are eminent scholars from Kashi; spread a plush Persian carpet for them!” Adorning them with fresh flower garlands, Shreehari smiled and said, “You have returned after twelve years in Kashi mastering the Siddhanta Kaumudi along with its three intricate commentaries, have you not? Let Us instruct Dada Khachar to supply you with ample grain rations.” Durlabhram was struck with awe!
Then, turning toward Kameshwar, Shreehari gently remarked, “O Brahmin! Look here, I sustained a small mark on my chest during childhood.” With divine grace, Shreehari untied the cords of His emerald brocade coat, revealing His chest—and there shone the unmistakable, radiant mark of Bhrigu-lanchan! In a single instant, all their intellectual vanity vanished. Weeping with repentance and joy, both scholars fell prostrate at Shreehari’s lotus feet, pleading, “O Supreme Lord! You are truly omniscient Purushottam Himself! Please initiate us into Your divine fold.” Shreehari administered the moral vows, transforming both brilliant scholars into steadfast, lifetime disciples.
