Jijibhai of Intola and the Salvation of His Ox

In the Kanam region near Amod lies the village of Intola. There lived an exemplary devotee of Shriji Maharaj named Jijibhai. By serving and associating with eminent saints like Sadguru Muktanand Swami, he had evolved into a steadfast and genuine devotee. He observed the five sacred vows (panch-vartaman) with utmost purity and constantly remembered Shri Hari. Earning his living through farming, he introduced whoever crossed his path to Bhagwan Swaminarayan as the manifest Supreme Lord, Purna Purushottam Narayan. Faithfully every year, he set aside a tenth or twentieth portion of his income (dharmada) and offered it at the feet of Shri Lakshmi-Narayan Dev and Shri Harikrishna Maharaj in Vadtal.

With the passage of time, as Jijibhai’s lifespan drew to a close, Shri Hari arrived one midnight on a golden chariot to escort his soul to Akshardham. In Intola village, there lived another devoted Brahmin satsangi named Bapubhai. At that hour, Bapubhai was asleep on a cot in his courtyard. Shri Hari descended with His radiant golden chariot right into Bapubhai’s courtyard. The entire courtyard was bathed in a brilliant flood of divine light, causing Bapubhai to awaken with a start. The moment he beheld the divine darshan of Shri Hari, he began prostrating repeatedly (dandvat) in overwhelming reverence. Blessed with the divine sight of Shri Hari at midnight, he was filled with profound ecstasy. Folding his hands, Bapubhai prayed and asked, “O Lord! Where are You journeying at this late hour of the night?” Shriji Maharaj replied, “The earthly lifespan of Jijibhai, the loving devotee of your village, is complete. Therefore, We have come to take him to Our Akshardham!” With folded hands, Bapubhai earnestly pleaded, “O Prabhu! Jijibhai is the principal pillar and strength of satsang in our region. Through mind, speech, and action, he lends tremendous fortitude to our fellowship. He talks of Satsang to new spiritual seekers (mumukshus) and inspires them to worship You. Guided by his noble counsel, numerous souls have sought refuge at Your lotus feet and are devoutly observing the vows while singing Your glory. Thus, satsang flourishes greatly on his account. Therefore, O Lord, if You please do not take Jijibhai to Akshardham just yet, it would be a blessing for our fellowship; for there is no other devotee as spiritually powerful and influential as him in our entire village.”

Shri Hari said, “Bapubhai, We have traveled all the way from Akshardham, and We cannot return with an empty chariot. So let us do this: instead of Jijibhai, We shall take the soul of his faithful ox to Our divine abode!” Hearing this unexpected declaration, Bapubhai curiously inquired, “O Maharaj! What extraordinary virtue or merit could an ox possibly have earned to attain Your supreme abode?” Shriji Maharaj smiled tenderly and explained, “His ox has performed devout service unto Our holy saints. Once, Muktanand Swami was traveling to the fair at Tavra with a group of fifty saints. Due to heavy floods in the Narmada River, the saints were stranded and remained without food for two to three days. At that critical time, Jijibhai yoked this very ox to his cart, loaded it with food grains, and delivered it to the stranded saints. The saints prepared khichdi, ate, and were thoroughly satisfied. In the noble act of serving food to Our supreme benefactors, the holy sadhus, this faithful ox pulled the cart. By virtue of this great service, We shall take him to Our Akshardham today!”

Shri Hari immediately boarded His golden chariot, proceeded to Jijibhai’s home, and escorted the soul of the ox to Akshardham. Bapubhai rushed from his house to Jijibhai’s residence and narrated the whole divine encounter—how Shriji Maharaj had personally arrived in a golden chariot to take Jijibhai, but on Bapubhai’s humble plea, agreed to take the ox instead. Both devotees hurried into the cattle shed, only to find that the ox had peacefully shed its mortal frame at that very moment. When the villagers learned of this miraculous occurrence the following morning, they were struck with wonder. All were filled with profound awe and devotion witnessing how, in this era of Kaliyuga, Shri Hari not only liberates His human devotees, but out of His boundless compassion, also elevates and grants Akshardham to mute animals that have rendered humble service to His holy saints.

“Kahu Kanam deshma, ek Intola gaam! Bhakt bhala kanbi kule, jaano Jijibhai naam! Aavya ardhi raate Avinash, thayo gaamma bahu prakash! Ek dwij bhakt Bapubhai, chhodhyo rath ena faliyaamai! Pachhi bolya Shri Maharaj, ame aavya Jijibhai kaaj! Tene tedi jaashu aaj ame, satya maano Bapubhai tame! Tyaare bolya Bapubhai em, ene meli jaao kahiye kem! Pan satsangma eh jeva, beeja nathi shiraman deva! Tyaare Nath kahe nahi laiye, leshu ena baladne taiye! Tyaare bolya Bapu Harijan, Prabhu evu shiyu enu punya! Tyaare Shri Hari kahe sant arthe, jutyoto e rasoine rathe! Maate lai jaishu ene aaj, em kahi padharya Maharaj!”
