અમરેલીમાં ઠેબી નદી કાંઠે મંદિરના પગથિયાં માટે એક વર્ષથી અટકેલી મંજૂરી સદગુરુ મહાપુરુષદાસ સ્વામીએ સુબા પાસે જઈ એક જ ઘડીમાં કરાવી આપ્યાનું તેજોમય ચરિત્ર.
એક સમયે સદગુરુ શ્રી મહાપુરુષદાસ સ્વામી સત્સંગ વિચરણ કરતાં પોતાના સંત મંડળ સાથે અમરેલી પધાર્યા હતા. ત્યાં ઠેબી નદીના કાંઠે સ્વામિનારાયણ મંદિર આવેલું હતું. ચોમાસામાં નદીના પૂરનું પાણી અંદર ન આવે તે માટે મંદિરના દરવાજા પાસે છાતી સમાન ઊંચાઈએ એક ઓરડો બાંધેલો હતો. આ ઓરડામાં જવા માટે આઠ-દસ પગથિયાં કરેલાં, પરંતુ ગાયકવાડી સુધરાઈ (નગરપાલિકા) ખાતાએ પરવાનગી વિનાના ગણી તોડી પડાવેલાં! પરિણામે ઓરડામાં જવા માટે લાકડાની નાની નીસરણી રાખવી પડતી હતી.
સ્વામીએ મોટા ગોખરવાળાના ઠક્કર ભગવાનજી અને નાના ગોખરવાળાના વેલા પટેલને પૂછ્યું, “આ ઓરડાનાં પગથિયાં કેમ ચણાવતા નથી?” તેઓએ વિનંતી કરી કે, “સ્વામી! સુધરાઈ ખાતું કહે છે કે વડોદરા રાજ્યના ગાયકવાડી સુબા સાહેબની મંજૂરી વિના પગથિયાં નહીં ચણાય. આ માટે એક વર્ષથી અરજીઓ કરી છે, પરંતુ કોઈ મંજૂરી મળતી નથી.” સ્વામીએ તુરંત કહ્યું, “ચાલો, આજે જ મંજૂરી મેળવી લઈએ!”
બપોરે ઠાકોરજીને થાળ જમાડી, વચનામૃત વાંચી સ્વામી બે સંતોને સાથે લઈ હાથમાં લાકડી ટેકવતા સીધા સુબાની કચેરીમાં પહોંચ્યા. મોટા મોટા અમલદારોને વટાવી સ્વામી સીધા સુબાની કચેરીના કઠેડા પાસે જઈ ઊભા રહ્યા અને લાકડી ખખડાવી પૂછ્યું, “તું સુબો છે?” સુબાએ તેજોમય સાધુને જોઈ હાથ જોડી કહ્યું, “હા બાપજી! હું સુબો છું, આપનું શું કામ છે?” સ્વામીએ ગર્જના કરી, “તને આ સૂબાગીરી કોણે આપી?” સુબો નમ્ર બની બોલ્યો, “બાપજી! આપ જેવા સંતોની કૃપાથી જ આ પદ મળ્યું છે.” સ્વામી કહે, “તો પછી અમારા મંદિરનું કામ કેમ અટકાવ્યું છે? સુધરાઈવાળા પગથિયાં ચણવા દેતા નથી, હમણાં જ હુકમ લખી આપ કે કોઈ અટકાવે નહીં!”
સુબાએ પોતાનું ચાલુ કામ પડતું મૂકી શિરસ્તેદારને બોલાવી તાબડતોબ સહી-સિક્કા સાથે રજાચિઠ્ઠી તૈયાર કરી સ્વામીના હાથમાં આપી દંડવત કર્યા. સ્વામીએ મંદિરે આવી કાગળ ભગવાનજી ઠક્કર અને વેલા પટેલને આપ્યો. બંને આશ્ચર્યચકિત થઈ ગયા કે જે કામમાં વર્ષો વીતી જાય તે એક જ ક્ષણમાં કેમ થયું!
ત્યારે સદગુરુ મહાપુરુષદાસ સ્વામીએ રહસ્ય ખોલતાં કહ્યું, “ભક્તો! આ સુબો પૂર્વજન્મમાં તાપી નદીના કાંઠે રહેતો દક્ષિણી બ્રાહ્મણ હતો અને ગણેશજીનો પરમ ઉપાસક હતો. અમે તીર્થયાત્રામાં ત્યાં ગયેલા ત્યારે તેણે અમને ભાવપૂર્વક ભોજન કરાવેલું. તે પુણ્યના પ્રતાપે તેને આ જન્મમાં ગાયકવાડનો સુબો બનાવ્યો છે અને તે આજે અમને ઓળખી ગયો!” તે જ દિવસે સ્વામીએ કડિયાઓ બોલાવી પગથિયાં ચણાવી દીધાં.

एक समय सद्गुरु श्री महापुरुषदास स्वामी अपने संत मंडल के साथ अमरेली पधारे। वहाँ ठेबी नदी के तट पर स्वामीनारायण मंदिर स्थित था। वर्षाकाल में बाढ़ से बचाव हेतु मंदिर के द्वार के समीप एक ऊँचा कक्ष बनाया गया था। उस कक्ष में प्रवेश हेतु सीढ़ियाँ बनी थीं, किंतु गायकवाड़ी नगर पालिका विभाग ने बिना अनुमति का बताकर सीढ़ियाँ तुड़वा दी थीं। विवश होकर भक्तों ने एक काष्ठ की सीढ़ी (निसरणी) रखी थी।
स्वामीजी ने गोखरवाला के भक्त भगवानजी ठक्कर और वेला पटेल से पूछा कि सीढ़ियाँ क्यों नहीं बनवाते? भक्तों ने व्यथा बताई कि बड़ौदा राज्य के गायकवाड़ सूबा की अनुमति के बिना निर्माण संभव नहीं है और एक वर्ष से आवेदन करने पर भी अनुमति नहीं मिल रही। स्वामीजी ने कहा, “चलो, आज ही अनुमति ले आते हैं!”
दोपहर में ठाकुरजी को भोग लगाकर और वचनामृत का पाठ कर स्वामीजी हाथ में लाठी लेकर सीधे सूबा के मुख्य कार्यालय पहुँचे। अधिकारियों को पार करते हुए स्वामीजी सूबा के सम्मुख खड़े होकर बोले, “क्या तुम सूबा हो?” सूबा ने दिव्य संत को देखकर हाथ जोड़े, “हाँ बापू! मैं सूबा हूँ, क्या आज्ञा है?” स्वामीजी ने पूछा, “तुम्हें यह सूबा पद किसने दिया है?” सूबा नतमस्तक होकर बोला, “महाराज! आप जैसे संतों की कृपा से ही यह पद मिला है।” स्वामीजी ने कहा, “तो फिर हमारे मंदिर का कार्य क्यों रोक रखा है? तुरंत अनुमति पत्र लिखकर दो!”
सूबा ने तत्काल अपने कर्मचारी को बुलाकर आधिकारिक मुहर के साथ स्वीकृति पत्र तैयार करवाकर स्वामीजी के चरणों में अर्पित किया। जब स्वामीजी ने वह पत्र भक्तों को सौंपा, तो वे स्तब्ध रह गए कि महीनों का कार्य क्षणभर में कैसे हो गया!
तब स्वामीजी ने रहस्योद्घाटन किया: “भक्तों! यह सूबा पूर्वजन्म में तापी नदी के तट पर रहने वाला दक्षिणात्य ब्राह्मण था और गणपति का अनन्य उपासक था। हमारी तीर्थयात्रा के समय इसने हमें प्रेमपूर्वक भोजन कराया था। उसी पुण्य से यह इस जन्म में सूबा बना है और आज इसने हमें पहचान लिया!” उसी दिन कारीगरों को बुलाकर मंदिर की सीढ़ियाँ निर्मित करा दी गईं।

Amreli Mahapurushdas Swami Gaekwad Suba
Once, Sadguru Shree Mahapurushdas Swami arrived in Amreli with his group of traveling sadhus. Situated on the scenic banks of the Thebi River was the Swaminarayan Mandir. To prevent seasonal floodwaters from entering, an elevated room had been constructed near the entrance gate at chest height. Formerly, eight to ten stone steps led up to this room, but the Gaekwad municipal authority had demolished them, decreeing that no permanent steps could be built without prior approval from the regional Governor (Suba). Consequently, devotees had to climb a precarious wooden ladder to access the sanctum.
Noticing this inconvenience, Swami asked the local devotees, Bhagwanji Thakkar and Vela Patel, why permanent steps had not been reconstructed. They lamented, “Swamiji! The municipal office insists on royal clearance from the Gaekwad Suba. We have submitted numerous petitions over the past year, but bureaucratic inertia has yielded nothing.” Swami resolutely replied, “Let us secure the approval this very afternoon!”
After offering the midday meal to Thakorji and reading two chapters of the Vachanamrut, Swami took two sadhus and walked directly to the Suba’s administrative court, leaning upon his wooden staff. Bypassing senior officials, Swami strode right up to the Governor’s inner dais, tapped his staff firmly against the railing, and asked, “Are you the Suba?” Beholding the radiant, august ascetic, the Governor stood up with folded hands, “Yes, holy father! I am the Suba. How may I serve you?” Swami demanded, “Who bestowed this governorship upon you?” Deeply humbled, the Suba bowed, “Revered father, it is solely through the grace of divine saints like you that I hold this office.” Swami declared, “Then why have you obstructed our mandir’s construction? The municipal officers refuse to let us build steps; issue an official decree immediately that none shall hinder the work!”
Halting all official proceedings, the Suba summoned his chief secretary, drafted the official sanction letter with state seals, and presented it at Swami’s holy feet with prostrations. Returning to the mandir, Swami handed the permit to Bhagwanji Thakkar and Vela Patel, who were utterly flabbergasted at how a stagnant year-long petition was resolved in mere minutes.
Sadguru Mahapurushdas Swami then revealed the mystical truth: “Devotees! In his previous birth, this Suba was a pious Brahmin dwelling on the banks of the Tapi River, deeply devoted to Lord Ganapati. When we passed through on pilgrimage, he lovingly served us meals. By the merit of that sacred service, he attained this governorship in his present birth, and his inner consciousness recognized us today!” That very afternoon, masons were summoned, and the permanent stone steps were constructed.
