Vadtal Hathisinhji Budhej Sankalp
During His stay in Vadtal, Shreehari resided in a room opposite the house of Vasanji Suthar. Daily, the Lord held sublime devotional assemblies seated upon a wooden cot beneath an ambla tree on the serene banks of Gomti Lake.
At that time, Darbar Hathisinhji of Budhej village, accompanied by his two sons and Gokal Gadhvi of Moraj, was traveling on foot toward Vadtal. Hathisinhji had not yet embraced Satsang, and out of skepticism, he formulated four distinct mental conditions while walking: “If Swaminarayan is truly God manifest, He must be seated facing north upon the cot, a black woolen blanket (kaali kamli) must be spread beneath Him, a sacred scripture placed on top of it, and He must acknowledge me.”
Upon arriving at Gomti Lake, he beheld Shreehari seated majestically facing north before a large congregation of saints and devotees. Hathisinhji bowed, whispering to himself that two of his conditions were fulfilled, marking Him as ‘half God.’ Omniscient Shreehari discerned his remaining unspoken thoughts instantly. Shreehari instructed His personal attendant, Mulji Brahmachari, “Brahmachariji, please bring our black woolen blanket and the handwritten scripture.” Brahmachariji spread the black blanket upon the cot and placed the holy scripture upon it. Turning its pages, Shreehari remarked to Sadguru Muktanand Swami, “Swamiji, look at how beautifully and calligraphically our sadhus have penned this holy text!”
Witnessing this astounding miracle, Darbar Hathisinhji sprang up from the assembly and fell prostrate at Shreehari’s lotus feet with tearful reverence. Smiling gently, Shreehari asked, “Darbar, you are a discerning gentleman; why do you bow repeatedly?” Hathisinhji replied with folded hands, “O Maharaj! I held four mental doubts on my way here. When two were met, I deemed You half-divine; but now that You have fulfilled all four without a single spoken word, I recognize You as the complete, supreme manifest God! Please grant me spiritual initiation and accept me at Your holy feet.”
Shreehari initiated him with the moral vows (panch vartman) and gently cautioned, “Darbar, one should not test God with rigid mental conditions. The Lord is sovereign; sometimes He fulfills a soul’s desires, and sometimes He does not. Out of sheer compassion, We fulfilled your resolutions today; otherwise, your spiritual liberation would have been jeopardized!” Filled with gratitude, Darbar Hathisinhji sought forgiveness and remained a staunch, exemplary devotee throughout his life.
