Diyor Mulji Bhavsar Nilkanth Varni Chophal
During His arduous forest travels as a young ascetic, Shree Nilkanth Varni arrived at the village of Diyor in Bhavnagar district and rested upon a flat stone at the village square (choro). At that time, a young boy named Mulji Bhavsar had the blessed fortune of beholding the radiant teenage yogi, quenching His thirst with cool water and touching His sacred feet.
Years passed, and as Mulji grew into adulthood, he received spiritual initiation into the Swaminarayan Sampradaya, observing the moral precepts with unwavering integrity. He regularly attended grand devotional festivals in Gadhpur. On one pilgrimage to Gadhpur, Mulji passed through a mango grove. Seeing lusciously ripe mangoes, he purchased them with a silver coin exclusively for Shreehari. Upon presenting them at Gadhada, Shreehari lovingly tasted the sweet fruit, as did Dada Khachar. Extremely pleased, Shreehari offered, “Mulji Bhagat, ask for any boon!” Mulji devoutly replied, “O Maharaj! Please grace my offering by partaking of one mango daily with your meal until they are finished.” Shreehari fulfilled this affectionate request, cherishing the devotee’s love just as Bhagwan Ram treasured Shabari’s wild berries: “He gave His word with firm resolve, partaking of one fruit each day, Praising its sweet nectar, knowing the deep love within; Just as Shabari’s wild berries were dear to Lord Ram, So did Shreehari treasure Mulji’s offered fruit.”
Later, an earnest desire arose in Mulji’s heart to present Shreehari with a magnificent garment. He commissioned master weavers in Diyor to weave an exquisite chophal (ceremonial shawl) interwoven with pure golden threads and brocade borders. He encouraged the weavers, saying, “Craft this with utmost mastery to delight the Supreme Lord; you shall partake in the inexhaustible merit of His divine pleasure.” Bringing the resplendent golden shawl to Gadhpur, Mulji reverently draped it around Shreehari during a grand assembly of thousands of saints and Kathi chieftains.
Awestruck by its divine beauty, the entire court marveled at the craftsmanship. Tears of ecstatic devotion flowed from Mulji’s eyes. Overwhelmed by His devotee’s pure love, Shreehari instantly absorbed Mulji into divine trance (samadhi), revealing the eternal realm of Akshardham where Shreehari reigns supreme on a golden throne amidst infinite liberated souls (muktas). Upon awakening, Shreehari affectionately embraced Mulji. Both the sanctified golden chophal and the sacred stone upon which Nilkanth Varni rested are preserved and venerated to this day at the Diyor mandir.
