A Farmer Offers Sugarcane on the Road to Jetalpur, and the Lesson of Spiritual Strength via Durlabhram’s Mare
On one occasion, Supreme Bhagwan Shreehari was journeying from Dholka toward Jetalpur accompanied by His ascetics and Kathi chieftains. Passing along the country road, they came upon a flourishing farm filled with tall, luscious white sugarcane, where an ox-driven crushing mill (sinchodo) was actively extracting fresh juice. Beholding the sweet crop, the spirited chieftain Sura Khachar of Loya reflected: ‘If Supreme Lord Shreehari and the holy ascetics partake of this delicious sugarcane, this humble farmer will attain eternal liberation!’ Approaching Shreehari, he requested permission to treat the assembly. Shreehari smiled and granted consent.
Leaving the holy party resting beneath the shade of wayside trees, Sura Khachar approached the farmer: “Patel! I am Darbar Sura Khachar of Loya-Nagadka. Pragat Bhagwan Swaminarayan has graced this road with His saintly retinue. Your sugarcane is exceptionally sweet; name your price and I shall pay in cash, but kindly allow us to cut cane for all!” The pious farmer was overwhelmed with joy: “Darbar! How have I earned such supreme fortune that the Lord of the cosmos has personally graced my fields? Talk not of payment! I shall load an entire bullock cart of prime sugarcane and present it at His holy feet! Pray keep Maharaj resting under the tree; I am right behind you with the cart!” Directing his farmhands, the farmer filled an entire cart with freshly harvested stalks, brought it to Shreehari, and surrendered the offering at the Lord’s lotus feet: “Waadh-waalo bolyo ven saaraan, dhanya bhaagya chhe aaj amaaraan…! Kyaanthi aanhi aave Jagdeesh, bhet sheladi hoon ja kareesh..! Pachhi sheladi-nu gaadu bharyun, jaine Shreehari-ne bhet karyun..! Saanktha Krishne karya angeekaar, venchya nij-jan-ne teh vaar..!” Shreehari personally distributed the sweet stalks to all sadhus, chieftains, and devotees with His own hands, liberating the farmer and his lineage.
Proceeding onward, Shreehari arrived in Jetalpur, partook of consecrated thal prepared by the devout Gangama, and convened a spiritual assembly by the village lake. Just then, a devotee named Durlabhram of Mahemdavad arrived riding a mare. The stubborn mare bolted toward the village, while Durlabhram yanked the bridle desperately to steer her toward the spiritual assembly. Watching the struggle, Shreehari drew a profound metaphysical lesson for the assembly: “Behold, sadhus and devotees! What a timely illustration! If the mare possesses greater strength, she will drag Durlabhram toward the worldly village; but if Durlabhram is stronger, he will pull the mare into this holy assembly! In the exact same manner, if a spiritual aspirant is spiritually strong (baliyo)—fortified by firm discipline, faith, and devotion—he will overpower worldly desires and enter Akshardham! But if his spiritual strength is feeble, the gravitational pull of worldly Maya will drag him away into spiritual ruin!” “Juwo bhakto tamaaso aa kevo, deva yogya chhe drashtaant jevo…! Dwij-ne aavavu chhe to aanheen, ghodi lai jaay chhe gaam maanheen..! Bal Durlabhram-maan hashe, to te aa sabha paas aavashe…! Tem je baliyo jeev hashe, te to Akshardham-maan jashe…! Bal ochhun hashe jeh-maanyi, Maya khenchi jashe tene kyaan-ee..!”
Thus, Shreehari spiritually elevated the generous farmer and bestowed an immortal teaching on the cultivation of soul-strength.
