Sea Pirates Attack Jivram Vipra of Wankaner, Shreehari’s Direct Intervention at Sea, and a Mother’s Unshakable Faith

In the historic town of Wankaner in Saurashtra lived Jivram Vipra, a deeply devoted and principled follower of Bhagwan Swaminarayan who observed the five moral disciplines with unflinching valor. While executing his professional mercantile duties, his consciousness remained perpetually attuned to divine remembrance. On one occasion, he traveled to the province of Sindh for grain trade, loaded an entire ship with premium rice, and commenced his return voyage across the Arabian Sea.

Midway across the sea, sea pirates suddenly intercepted the vessel, lashed their craft to Jivram’s ship, and boarded brandishing lethal blades. Fearing for their lives, the frightened crew leaped into the waves and swam to safety. Abandoned alone, Jivram was captured; the ruthless brigands tightly bound his arms behind his back, delivered five to six brutal dagger blows to his head, and threw him overboard into the deep ocean waters! Though severely wounded and bleeding profusely, Jivram miraculously floated atop the ocean swell without sinking. Enduring acute agony, he reflected in prayer: ‘I have tasted the utmost limits of worldly suffering; why does this body not submerge and breath not depart?’ He prayed with soul-stirring earnestness: “O Supreme Lord! I harbor no further desires for this fleeting earthly existence; pray take me into Your eternal Akshardham!”

The merciful Lord Shreehari heard His devotee’s cry of distress and manifested instantly in physical form upon the water! With His divine hands, Shreehari lifted Jivram out of the surging waves back onto a boat, severed his bonds, fed him sweet water and nourishing food, and gently stroked his wounded head with His divine palm. In an instant, every wound sealed and all physical torment evaporated! Steering the vessel safely to the shoreline, Shreehari instructed Jivram to return home and vanished.

Meanwhile, the sailors who had escaped reached Wankaner and prematurely announced that pirates had murdered Jivram at sea. The orthodox village Brahmins gathered at Jivram’s home and demanded of his elderly mother: “Your son is dead; you must immediately conduct the ritual breaking of bangles (chuda-karma) for your daughter-in-law!” The mother replied with unshakable conviction: “My Jivram is not dead; I have implicit faith in Shreehari; do not torment us needlessly!” When the caste elders insisted sternly, the mother wept in distress and prayed fervently to Bhagwan Swaminarayan. The Lord manifested before her in a divine vision and comforted her: “Revered mother! Grieve not in the least! Declare fearlessly to the elders that your son is alive and will return home safely before tomorrow noon!” Reassured by the Lord’s pledge, the mother turned the Brahmins away. Miraculously, the very next afternoon, Jivram Vipra walked through the door alive and completely sound in body, sending a wave of awe throughout Wankaner!
