જમતાં જમતાં પાણી માંગતા બાલચંદભાઈ ભાવવિભોર થઈ દૂધની ત્રાંબડી લઈ આવ્યા; શ્રીહરિએ કહ્યું ‘આ સંસારની માથાકૂટ મેલો’, અને ભગત તરત સાધુ થઈ સાથે ચાલી નીકળ્યા.
સંવત ૧૮૬૮માં સર્વાવતારી શ્રીહરિ સંતો અને હરિભક્તોના સંઘ સાથે સૌપ્રથમ વખત નડિયાદ તાલુકાના ટૂંડેલ ગામે પધાર્યા હતા. આ ગામમાં બાલચંદભાઈ નામે એક સમૃદ્ધ પાટીદાર ખેડૂત રહેતા હતા. તેમના ઘરના વિશાળ ફળિયામાં મીઠા પાણીનો કૂવો અને હાથી જેવી ચાર તગડી ભેંસોના દૂઝણાં હતાં. ગામના અગ્રણી પાટીદાર હરિભક્તો—બાલચંદભાઈ પટેલ, ગંગારામ પટેલ, ગણેશભાઈ, ગોપાલભાઈ, વાનાભાઈ વગેરેએ ઢોલ, શરણાઈ અને ત્રાંસાના તાલે વાજતે-ગાજતે ધામધૂમથી સામૈયું કરી શ્રીહરિને બાલચંદભાઈના ઘેર પધરાવ્યા. બાલચંદભાઈએ પોતાની ઘરની દૂઝણી ભેંસોના શુદ્ધ દૂધને ધીમી આંચે ઉકાળીને બનાવેલા સ્વાદિષ્ટ દૂધપાકની રસોઈ તૈયાર કરાવી. શ્રીહરિ તથા સમગ્ર સંતમંડળને પ્રેમપૂર્વક દૂધપાક જમાડી તૃપ્ત કર્યા. શ્રીહરિ બપોરનો થાળ જમી, ફરી પધારવાનું વચન આપીને નંદાસણ તરફ સીધાવ્યા.
ત્યારબાદ સંવત ૧૮૭૬ની સાલમાં શ્રીહરિ સંતો તથા કાઠી દરબારો સાથે રાજપરથી નીકળી, પોતાના પૂર્વે આપેલા વચન પ્રમાણે ફરી ટૂંડેલ પધાર્યા. પૂર્વજન્મના મુમુક્ષુ બાલચંદભાઈ પટેલને શ્રીહરિના દર્શન થતાં જ તત્કાળ અલૌકિક સમાધિ થઈ ગઈ! સમાધિમાં તેમણે શ્રીહરિના દિવ્ય સાકાર સ્વરૂપમાંથી અનંત તેજના ફુવારા છૂટતા અને અક્ષરધામના મુક્તો વચ્ચે બિરાજેલા પ્રત્યક્ષ નિહાળ્યા. સમાધિમાંથી જાગીને બાલચંદભાઈએ શ્રીજીમહારાજનું આરતી, કંકુ-ચંદન અને રેશમી વસ્ત્રોથી ભાવપૂર્વક પૂજન કર્યું. ફળિયામાં મોટી સભા ભરાઈ અને શ્રીહરિએ સહુને અમૃતવાણીનો ઉપદેશ આપ્યો.
ફળિયામાં મોટા ચૂલા સળગાવીને સંતોએ શેર-શેર ઘીના લચપચતા લાડુ, દાળ, ભાત અને શાકની રસોઈ તૈયાર કરી. થાળ તૈયાર થતાં મુળજી (મુકુંદ) બ્રહ્મચારીજીએ શ્રીહરિને બાજોઠ પર બિરાજમાન કરી અતિ સ્નેહથી પીરસીને જમાડ્યા. શ્રીહરિ જમતાં જમતાં બોલ્યા: “બાલચંદભાઈ! જરાક પીવાનું જળ લાવો!” પરંતુ બાલચંદભાઈ તો શ્રીહરિના મનોહર મુખારવિંદના દર્શનમાં એટલા બધા ભાવવિભોર અને તલ્લીન થઈ ગયા હતા કે પાણીને બદલે તાંબાની ત્રાંબડીમાં તાજું મીઠું દૂધ ભરીને લાવ્યા અને શ્રીહરિના હાથમાં દૂધની ધાર કરવા લાગ્યા! શ્રીહરિએ હસીને કહ્યું: “ભગત! અમે તો પાણી માંગ્યું હતું ને તમે આ દૂધ લાવ્યા?” પોતાના ભક્તનો આવો ઉત્કટ પ્રેમ અને નિરુપાધિક ભાવ જોઈ અંતર્યામી શ્રીહરિ બોલ્યા: “બાલચંદભાઈ! તમારો જીવ આ માયિક દૂષિત સંસારનો નથી; તમે તો અમારા અક્ષરધામના મુક્તાત્મા છો! ચાલો, આ સંસારની તમામ માથાકૂટ પડતી મૂકો અને અમારી સાથે ચાલી નીકળો!”
જેમ સર્પ જૂની કાંચળીને ક્ષણવારમાં સહેજે ઉતારી ફેંકે, તેમ શ્રીહરિનો એક જ સાદ સાંભળતાં જ બાલચંદભાઈએ ઘરબાર, ખેતીવાડી, સંપત્તિ અને સંસારના સર્વ બંધનો તત્ક્ષણ ત્યાગી દીધાં અને પ્રભુની પાછળ ચાલી નીકળ્યા! શ્રીહરિએ થોડા સમય પછી તેમને ભાગવતી મહાદીક્ષા આપીને ‘શાંતાનંદ સ્વામી’ નામ પાડ્યું. આમ, બાલચંદભાઈના અનન્ય ત્યાગ અને ભક્તિથી ટૂંડેલ ગામ સત્સંગના ઇતિહાસમાં સદાને માટે અમર થઈ ગયું.

संवत १८६८ में सर्वावतारी श्रीहरि संतों एवं भक्तों के संघ सहित प्रथम बार नडियाद तहसील के टूंडेल गांव पधारे। इस गांव में बालचंदभाई नामक एक संपन्न पाटीदार कृषक रहते थे। उनके घर के विशाल आंगन में मीठे जल का कुआं और चार हष्ट-पुष्ट भैंसों का दूध-घी प्रचुर मात्रा में था। गांव के प्रमुख पाटीदार भक्तों—बालचंदभाई, गंगाराम पटेल, गणेशभाई, गोपालभाई आदि ने ढोल-नगाड़ों के साथ भव्य सामैया कर श्रीहरि को बालचंदभाई के घर पधराया। बालचंदभाई ने अपनी भैंसों के गाढ़े दूध की खीर (दूधपाक) तैयार करवाई और श्रीहरि तथा संतों को प्रेमपूर्वक जिमाया। दोपहर का भोजन कर श्रीजी महाराज पुनः पधारने का वचन देकर प्रस्थान कर गए।
संवत १८७६ में श्रीहरि संतों और काठी दरबारों के साथ अपने वचन के अनुसार पुनः टूंडेल पधारे। पूर्वजन्म के संस्कारवान बालचंदभाई को श्रीहरि के दर्शन होते ही समाधि लग गई! समाधि में उन्होंने श्रीहरि के दिव्य विग्रह से निकलते हुए करोड़ों सूर्यों के समान प्रकाश पुंज और अक्षरधाम के दर्शन किए। समाधि से जागकर उन्होंने श्रीहरि का आरती और रेशमी वस्त्रों से पूजन किया। आंगन में संतों ने शुद्ध घी के चूरमा के लड्डू, दाल-भात का भोजन बनाया। मुकुंद ब्रह्मचारी ने श्रीहरि को पाट पर बैठाकर प्रेम से भोजन कराया। भोजन करते हुए श्रीहरि ने जल मांगा: “बालचंदभाई! थोड़ा पीने का पानी लाइए!” किंतु बालचंदभाई श्रीहरि की मोहिनी मूरत के दर्शन में इतने तल्लीन थे कि जल के स्थान पर तांबे के पात्र (त्रांबड़ी) में ताजा दूध भरकर ले आए और प्रभु के हाथों पर दूध की धार करने लगे! श्रीहरि मुस्कुराए: “भगत! हमने तो पानी मांगा था, आप दूध ले आए?” भक्त का अनन्य प्रेम देखकर श्रीहरि बोले: “बालचंदभाई! आपका जीव इस नश्वर संसार का नहीं है; आप तो हमारे अक्षरधाम के मुक्त हैं! इस संसार के प्रपंच को छोड़िए और हमारे साथ चलिए!”
जैसे सर्प अपनी केंचुली त्याग देता है, वैसे ही श्रीहरि का वचन सुनते ही बालचंदभाई ने घर-बार, खेत, परिवार सब कुछ तत्काल त्याग दिया और प्रभु के पीछे चल पड़े! कुछ समय पश्चात श्रीहरि ने उन्हें साधु दीक्षा देकर ‘शांतानंद स्वामी’ नाम दिया।

Balchandbhai Patel Welcomes Shreehari with Doodhpak in Tundel, the Milk Pitcher, and Initiation as Shantanand Swami
In Samvat 1868, Supreme Lord Shreehari, accompanied by an extensive congregation of ascetics and devotees, arrived in the village of Tundel in the Nadiad district for the first time. Residing in this prosperous village was a devout and affluent Patidar farmer named Balchandbhai Patel. Within his spacious courtyard stood a freshwater well and four fine milch buffaloes providing abundant dairy. Leading Patidar devotees—including Balchandbhai Patel, Gangaram Patel, Ganeshbhai, and Gopalbhai—welcomed Shreehari with ceremonial drums, clarinets, and brass cymbals, escorting the divine party to Balchandbhai’s home. Balchandbhai had rich, thickened rice-pudding (doodhpak) prepared using pure, sweet buffalo milk, serving Shreehari and the holy ascetics with boundless hospitality. After partaking of lunch, Shreehari promised to visit again and proceeded toward Nandasan.
True to His promise, in Samvat 1876, Shreehari revisited Tundel while traveling from Rajpar alongside His ascetics and Kathi chieftains. The moment Balchandbhai laid eyes upon Shreehari, he was instantly propelled into divine samadhi! In that transcendental state, he beheld luminous fountains of divine light radiating from Shreehari’s sacred form, revealing Him enthroned in Akshardham amidst innumerable Muktas. Upon returning to normal consciousness, Balchandbhai performed Aarti, applied fragrant sandalwood paste, and offered silk garments to the Lord. A massive congregation assembled in the courtyard, where Shreehari delivered nectarine spiritual discourses.
Setting up clay hearths in the open courtyard, the sadhus cooked a sumptuous meal featuring laddoos dripping with pure ghee, lentils, rice, and fresh vegetables. Mulji (Mukund) Brahmachari seated Shreehari upon an ornate wooden stool and served Him lovingly. While dining, Shreehari requested: “Balchandbhai! Please bring some drinking water!” However, Balchandbhai was so deeply enraptured by the mesmerizing beauty of Shreehari’s face that instead of water, he rushed inside, filled a polished copper pitcher (tambdi) with fresh milk, and began pouring milk over Shreehari’s hands! Shreehari chuckled: “Bhagat! We asked for water, and you brought milk?” Beholding the unalloyed love of His devotee, the omniscient Lord remarked: “Balchandbhai! Your soul does not belong to this impure, mundane world; you are an eternal liberated soul (Mukta) of Our Akshardham! Cast aside the entanglements of this fleeting existence and come along with Us!”
Just as a serpent effortlessly casts off its worn-out skin, Balchandbhai abandoned home, family, farms, and worldly attachments without a second thought upon hearing the Lord’s call, and walked right behind Shreehari! Soon afterward, Shreehari initiated him into the highest ascetic order, conferring the name ‘Shantanand Swami’. Thus, through Balchandbhai’s heroic renunciation, Tundel was immortalized in the annals of Satsang history.
