Bhakta Banesang Gadhvi’s Absolute Surrender in Devrasan, Constructing a Hari Mandir Instead of His Own Home
In the Mehsana district, approximately eight kilometers along the road to Vijapur, lies the serene village of Devrasan. Through the touring visits of Swaminarayan ascetics, a noble soul of the Gadhvi (Charan) community named Banesang embraced Satsang. Renouncing all intoxicating vices and worldly vices, he dedicated himself whole-heartedly to devotion. While other elders of his community routinely gathered at the village square to indulge in opium concoctions (kasumbo), young Banesang found no pleasure in worldly pastimes. Sporting a bright tilak-chandlo upon his forehead, he upheld the five moral disciplines with heroic determination, hosting itinerant sadhus and devotees with genuine warmth.
Banesang sustained his family through farming, residing in a modest mud-and-thatch cottage. One year, his farm yielded an exceptionally bountiful harvest, bringing substantial financial prosperity. Banesang conceived the desire to replace his dilapidated mud dwelling with a sturdy, permanent brick house. He commissioned the local potters to fire an extensive kiln of high-quality bricks right beside his homestead. However, being a devotee of pure conscience, Banesang reflected: ‘Before commencing the foundation of my new home, let me walk to Gadhpur, have darshan of Supreme Lord Shreehari, and obtain His divine permission!’ Packing travel provisions, clean garments, and his daily puja, he walked on foot to Gadhpur. Arriving after several days of travel, he fell prostrate in dandvat pranam at Shreehari’s lotus feet.
The affectionate Lord welcomed His faithful devotee with immense joy, embraced him warmly, and placed His hand upon his head: “Bana Bhagat! What brings you all the way to Gadhpur?” Banesang submitted with folded hands: “O Maharaj! By Your divine grace, my harvest was plentiful this season. I have prepared an entire kiln of kiln-fired bricks to construct a permanent brick-and-lime house. But I have come solely to seek Your holy consent. If it pleases You, I shall build it; otherwise, I shall abandon the idea entirely!” Shreeji Maharaj smiled knowingly and playfully tested his surrender: “Bhagat! You are building a magnificent brick house for your own residence, but have You given any thought to Us? Build a house for Us to dwell in as well!”
For a sharp devotee, a subtle hint is sufficient. Banesang immediately grasped the divine will of the Antaryami Lord! Spending a few blessed days in Gadhpur partaking of spiritual discourses, he returned to Devrasan. Upon returning home, he renounced all thoughts of building a private residence for himself. Utilizing every single brick and mortar mixture from the kiln, he constructed an ornate and beautiful Hari Mandir for Bhagwan Swaminarayan in the heart of the village! Meanwhile, he continued to reside contentedly inside his old, humble mud cottage.
Sometime later, Adi Acharya Shree Ayodhyaprasadji Maharaj personally graced Devrasan with a grand retinue, consecrated the sacred chitra-pratima of Shreehari in the newly built mandir, and performed the formal murti-pratishtha. Acharya Maharaj was deeply moved by Banesang’s absolute surrender and blessed him profusely. The establishment of the mandir catalyzed a spiritual renaissance in Devrasan, leading neighboring Gadhvi families—such as Jetsibhai, Bhagabhai, and Jivabhai—to embrace Ekantik Satsang. To this day, that sacred temple graces Devrasan, and Banesang’s descendants remain devoted followers of the holy fellowship.
