The Fodder Dispute for the Kathi Darbars’ Steeds in Vadtal, Brahmanand Swami’s Soulful Kirtan, and Shreehari’s Stay
At one time, Supreme Bhagwan Shreehari, mounted upon His beloved mare Manki, arrived in Vadtal during the winter season accompanied by the heroic Kathi chieftains—Sura Khachar, Dada Khachar, Somla Khachar, Alaiya Khachar, and Moka Khachar. At that time, construction of the monumental Vadtal mandir was progressing in full swing. Sadguru Brahmanand Swami, who supervised the temple construction, warmly arranged suitable lodgings for all the chieftains and welcomed the divine retinue.
During the biting winter chill, the Kathi chieftains maintained the vigor of their thoroughbred horses by feeding them daily ‘ratab’ (nourishing medicinal dumplings enriched with dried fruits and spices) and administering pure ghee through a bamboo horn (naal). Due to the extended stay in Vadtal, a friction arose with the mandir’s head storekeeper (kothari) regarding the adequate supply of grain, ghee, and fodder for the royal horses. Feeling slighted that their horses were not receiving customary hospitality, the proud Kathi chieftains prepared to pack up and ride back to Gadhpur. Being the omniscient Lord, Shreehari perceived their discontent and, assembling the chieftains, agreed to return to Gadhpur with them.
Sadguru Brahmanand Swami was an exceptionally astute, discerning, and visionary satpurush. Reading the expressions of Shreehari and the chieftains, he instantly deduced that if Maharaj and the Kathi patrons departed, the temple construction would lose momentum and a shadow of despondency would fall over the holy project. Being a brilliant improvisational poet, Brahmanand Swami picked up the devotional mood. That afternoon, as Shreehari presided upon the upholstered cushions before the grand assembly, Brahmanand Swami began singing four newly improvised padas in a deep, melancholic Marwadi-Sorath melody with tears flowing from his eyes:
“Jaawa nai deshaanji Nandkumaar, maane thaara darshan-ro chhe ati pyaar..! Taare bina mein keen vidh jeewaan, chatur peeyaho maaro praan-aadhaar..!! Haalun haalun kaan-ee karo chho vaari, Shaamliyaaji sardaar..! Rasiya thaane rokshaan, thaanli kayi karaavo chhoji thai manuwaar..!! Saatheedaa-ne jamaadshaan-ji, dhrut saakar mewa saar..! Ghodlaa-ne ghee dewaadshaan-ji, roodi raatab neeli neeli chaar..! Jo maaro barjyo nahin karo, peeyaan-to maaro aur vichaar..! Brahmanand ra Naathji vaari, aashaa-me thaanki saayanbaan ghoomar laar…!! Jaawa nai deshaanji Nandkumaar…”
(“We will never let You depart, O beloved Son of Nand! Your holy vision is our very lifeline! How can we survive without You, O Lord of our life-breath? Why do You repeatedly speak of leaving, O Supreme Chieftain? We shall hold You back with loving force! We will feast all Your companions with pure ghee, sugar, and the finest fruits; we will feed Your horses abundant ghee, rich spiced ratab, and fresh green grass! If You disregard my plea, my Lord, I have resolved another plan—I shall whirl in devotion behind You forever! We will never let You depart…”)
Hearing these poignant verses drenched in unadulterated divine love, Shreehari’s heart was deeply moved. He rose from His seat, rushed forward, and wrapped Brahmanand Swami in a loving embrace! Shreehari took off the fragrant garland of roses from His own neck, adorned Swami with it, and agreed to stay in Vadtal.
Brahmanand Swami promptly arranged an abundant supply of ghee, green fodder, rich horse-feed, and grain for all the steeds, and personally ensured that the Kathi chieftains were served sumptuous feasts every day. Thus, bound by the cords of supreme devotion, the Lord remained in Vadtal, and the mandir construction proceeded smoothly.
