કુશળકુંવરબાંના ભાવથી સંતો તેડવા માધવદાસ સ્વામી નીકળ્યા અને એક જ દિવસમાં સંતો આવ્યા; વડતાલ પ્રતિષ્ઠા સમયે આમોદમાં પણ સ્વામીએ સંતોને તેડી મહારાજનો રાજીપો મેળવ્યો.
સંવત ૧૮૭૨માં વડતાલ ખાતે કાર્તિકી સમૈયો પૂર્ણ કરી શ્રીહરિ ધરમપુરના મહારાણી કુશળકુંવરબાંના ભાવભર્યા નિમંત્રણને માન આપી થોડાક સંતો-ભક્તો સાથે ધરમપુર પધાર્યા હતા. ધરમપુરના રાજમહેલમાં શ્રીહરિની સેવા-પૂજા કરતાં કરતાં એક દિવસ રાણી કુશળકુંવરબાંએ બે હાથ જોડી નમ્ર પ્રાર્થના કરી: “હે પ્રભુ! આપના આખા સત્સંગના સર્વે સંતોના મંડળોને અહીં ધરમપુર તેડાવો, તો અમને સર્વે પરમહંસોના દર્શન અને પાદપૂજા-સેવાનો પરમ લાભ મળે!”
શ્રીહરિએ સભા સન્મુખ જોઈને કહ્યું: “રાણીબાં! સહુ સંતો તો કચ્છ, કાઠિયાવાડ, દંઢાવ્ય, હાલાર, સોરઠ અને ખાનદેશ જેવા દૂર દૂરના પ્રદેશોમાં સત્સંગ વિચરણ કરી રહ્યા છે; આટલી ઝડપે બધા સંતો અહીં કેવી રીતે આવી શકે?” કુશળકુંવરબાં ગદ્ગદ થઈ બોલ્યાં: “હે પ્રભુ! સમગ્ર બ્રહ્માંડના સર્વ જીવો આપને આધીન વર્તે છે; આપ કરુણા કરો તો શું અશક્ય છે?” ત્યારે શ્રીહરિએ સભામાં પૂછ્યું: “દેશ-દેશાંતરમાં વિચરણ કરતા સંતોને તેડવા કોઈ જાય ખરો?” જેરામ બ્રહ્મચારી બોલ્યા: “મહારાજ! હું જાઉં?” શ્રીહરિએ કહ્યું: “તમારું કામ તો અહીં રસોઈ અને સેવામાં છે, બીજો કોઈ ઉત્સાહી સંત જાય તો મેળ પડે.”
તે સમયે સભામાં બિરાજમાન નવદીક્ષિત માધવદાસ સ્વામી શ્રીહરિની આજ્ઞા પામવા ઊભા થયા. તેમણે શ્રીજીમહારાજને સાષ્ટાંગ દંડવત પ્રણામ કરીને અરજ કરી: “હે પ્રભુ! જો આપની રજા હોય તો હું સંતોને તેડવા જાઉં!” શ્રીહરિ અત્યંત પ્રસન્ન થયા અને માધવદાસ સ્વામીની છાતીમાં પોતાના પાવન ચરણારવિંદનો સ્પર્શ કરાવી મસ્તક પર વરદહસ્ત મૂક્યો. પ્રભુના ચરણારવિંદનું દિવ્ય બળ પામી માધવદાસ સ્વામી વાયુવેગે સંતોના મંડળોને તેડવા નીકળી પડ્યા.
આશ્ચર્યની વાત એ બની કે બીજે જ દિવસે સવારે શ્રીહરિ સભા ભરીને બેઠા હતા, ત્યાં તો માધવદાસ સ્વામી સંતોના આગમનના સમાચાર લઈને પાછા હાજર થઈ ગયા! તેમણે કહ્યું: “મહારાજ! દેશ-પરદેશથી સંતોના મંડળો ધરમપુરની સીમમાં આવી પહોંચ્યા છે!” આ સાંભળી કાઠી દરબારો હસીને બોલ્યા: “આટલા ટૂંકા સમયમાં તો સુરત સુધી પણ ન પહોંચાય! સ્વામી ક્યાંક રસ્તામાંથી જ પાછા વળી આવ્યા લાગે છે!” શ્રીજીમહારાજ મરક મરક હસ્યા અને નાજા જોગીયાને સંબોધીને ગંભીર રહસ્ય પ્રગટ કર્યું: “સાંભળો નાજા જોગીયા! ત્રેતાયુગમાં શ્રી રામચંદ્રજીની આજ્ઞાએ હનુમાનજીએ એક જ દિવસમાં અઢાર પદ્મ વાનરોને સંદેશો પહોંચાડી દીધો હતો; જીવને પરોક્ષ અવતારનું માહાત્મ્ય સમજાય છે, પણ પ્રત્યક્ષ ભગવાન અને તેમના સંતોના પ્રતાપનું માહાત્મ્ય સમજાતું નથી!” અને સાચે જ, બીજે દિવસે હજારો પરમહંસોના મંડળો સામૈયા સાથે ધરમપુરમાં પ્રવેશી શ્રીહરિના ચરણોમાં ઢળી પડ્યા ત્યારે સર્વે દરબારો માધવદાસ સ્વામીની દિવ્ય સ્થિતિ જોઈ સ્તબ્ધ થઈ ગયા!
ત્યારબાદ સંવત ૧૮૮૧માં વડતાલ મંદિરની મૂર્તિપ્રતિષ્ઠા સંપન્ન કરી શ્રીહરિ સુરત પધારતા હતા ત્યારે રસ્તામાં સદગુરુ મુક્તાનંદ સ્વામીએ ઈચ્છા વ્યક્ત કરી: “મહારાજ! સર્વે સંતોને સાથે લીધા હોત તો સમૈયાની શોભા ઔર વધત!” શ્રીહરિએ ફરી માધવદાસ સ્વામીને ચરણારવિંદ આપી સંતોને તેડવા મોકલ્યા: “વડતાલ છે સંત પચાસ, મોકલો તહાં માધવદાસ..! બીજા જ્યાં હોય ત્યાંય સીધાવે, સૌને તેડીને સુરત આવે..! કહ્યું માધવદાસને જ્યારે, ગયા માધવદાસ તે ત્યારે..! ગયા આમોદ શ્રી મહારાજ, ત્યાં તો આવી મળ્યો તે સમાજ..!” શ્રીહરિ આમોદમાં દીનાનાથ ભટ્ટના ઘેર પહોંચ્યા, એટલી વારમાં તો માધવદાસ સ્વામી સમગ્ર સંતસમાજને તેડીને આમોદ હાજર થઈ ગયા!
સંવત ૧૮૮૨-૮૩માં જ્યારે વડતાલમાં ગોમતી તળાવ ઊંડું ગળાવવાનું સેવાકાર્ય ચાલતું હતું, ત્યારે માધવદાસ સ્વામી ગોમતીના કાંઠે નાની ઝૂંપડી બાંધીને રહેતા. શ્રીહરિ અવારનવાર એ પાવન ઝૂંપડીમાં પધારી ભોજન જમતા અને પોઢતા. પાર્ષદ ગુમાનજી (જેઓ પાછળથી વાસુદેવચરણદાસજી થયા) તેમણે નોંધ્યું છે: “કવિ સુંદર માધવદાસ, રહે વ્રતપુરીમાં તે વાસ..! કરે કવિતા શ્રીહરિ તણી, લીલા વર્ણવે ભક્તિથી ઘણી..!!” એક વખત શ્રીહરિએ કીર્તન ગાતા સંતોને પોતાના કંઠના હાર વહેંચ્યા; પરંતુ માધવદાસ સ્વામી સુધી પહોંચતા હાર ખૂટી ગયા. ભક્તવત્સલ શ્રીહરિ પરત આવ્યા અને માધવદાસ સ્વામીને નામથી બોલાવી પોતાના ગળામાં પહેરેલો છેલ્લો દિવ્ય હાર પહેરાવી વિશેષ રાજીપો વરસાવ્યો: “હાર આપી હરિ ચાલ્યા ગયા, તેને પ્રેમાનંદ સ્વામી લઈ..! સહુને વહેંચી આપીયા, અને મને પુગ્યો નઈ..! મહારાજ વળી મારું નામ લઈ, વળી કૃપા કરી કિરતાર..! પાતળીયે પ્રસન્ન થઈ કરી, આપ્યો નિજ અવલ હાર..!!”

संवत १८७२ में वड़ताल में कार्तिकी समैया संपन्न कर श्रीहरि धर्मपुर की महारानी कुशलकुंवरबा के अनन्य प्रेमवश कुछ संतों-भक्तों के साथ धर्मपुर पधारे। राजमहल में सेवा करते हुए एक दिन रानी कुशलकुंवरबा ने करबद्ध प्रार्थना की: “हे प्रभु! आपके संपूर्ण सत्संग के सभी संतों के मंडलों को यहां धर्मपुर बुलवाएं, ताकि हमें सभी परमहंसों के दर्शन एवं पादपूजन का परम लाभ प्राप्त हो सके!”
श्रीहरि ने सभा की ओर देखकर कहा: “रानीबा! सभी संत तो कच्छ, काठियावाड़, डंढाव्य, हालार, सोरठ और खानदेश जैसे दूरस्थ क्षेत्रों में विचरण कर रहे हैं; इतनी शीघ्र वे सब यहां कैसे आ सकते हैं?” कुशलकुंवरबा ने गद्गद होकर कहा: “हे नाथ! संपूर्ण ब्रह्मांड के चर-अचर जीव आपके अधीन हैं; आपकी कृपा हो तो क्या असंभव है?” तब श्रीहरि ने सभा में पूछा: “देश-देशांतर में फैले संतों को बुलाने कौन जाएगा?” जेराम ब्रह्मचारी बोले: “महाराज! क्या मैं जाऊं?” श्रीहरि ने कहा: “आपका कार्य तो यहां रसोई और सेवा का है; कोई अन्य उत्साही संत जाए तो बात बने।”
उस समय सभा में उपस्थित नवदीक्षित माधवदास स्वामी आज्ञा पालन हेतु खड़े हुए और श्रीजी महाराज को साष्टांग दंडवत कर बोले: “हे प्रभु! आपकी आज्ञा हो तो मैं सभी संतों को बुलाने जाऊं!” श्रीहरि ने अत्यंत प्रसन्न होकर माधवदास स्वामी के वक्षस्थल पर अपने चरणारविंद का स्पर्श कराया और मस्तक पर वरदहस्त रखा। प्रभु की दिव्य शक्ति प्राप्त कर माधवदास स्वामी वायुवेग से संतों को बुलाने निकल पड़े।
दूसरे ही दिन प्रातः जब श्रीहरि सभा में विराजमान थे, तभी माधवदास स्वामी संतों के आगमन की सूचना लेकर उपस्थित हो गए! उन्होंने बताया: “महाराज! सभी संत मंडल धर्मपुर की सीमा में आ पहुंचे हैं!” यह सुनकर काठी दरबार हंसे और बोले: “इतने कम समय में तो सूरत भी नहीं पहुंचा जा सकता; स्वामी रास्ते से ही लौट आए लगते हैं!” श्रीजी महाराज मंद-मंद मुस्कुराए और नाजा जोगिया से बोले: “सुनो नाजा जोगिया! त्रेतायुग में श्रीराम की आज्ञा से हनुमानजी ने एक ही दिन में अठारह पद्म वानरों तक संदेश पहुंचाया था; अज्ञानी जीव को परोक्ष का माहात्म्य समझ आता है, किंतु प्रत्यक्ष भगवान और उनके संतों का सामर्थ्य समझ नहीं आता!” और सचमुच, अगले ही दिन विशाल संत समूह धर्मपुर में प्रविष्ट हुआ और श्रीहरि के चरणों में नतमस्तक हो गया। सभी दरबार माधवदास स्वामी की अलौकिक शक्ति देखकर स्तब्ध रह गए!
इसके उपरांत संवत १८८१ में वड़ताल मंदिर की मूर्ति प्रतिष्ठा के बाद जब श्रीहरि सूरत जा रहे थे, तब सद्गुरु मुक्तानंद स्वामी की प्रार्थना पर श्रीहरि ने पुनः माधवदास स्वामी को संतों को बुलाने भेजा। श्रीहरि आमोद में दीनानाथ भट्ट के घर पहुंचे ही थे कि माधवदास स्वामी सभी संतों को लेकर आमोद पहुंच गए! “वडताल छे संत पचास, मोकलो तहां माधवदास..! बीजा ज्यां होय त्यांय सीधावे, सौने तेडीने सूरत आवे..! गया आमोद श्री महाराज, त्यां तो आवी मळ्यो ते समाज..!”
संवत १८८२-८३ में जब वड़ताल में गोमती सरोवर को गहरा करने की सेवा चल रही थी, तब माधवदास स्वामी गोमती तट पर एक कुटिया बनाकर रहते थे। श्रीहरि अनेक बार उस कुटिया में पधारे, भोजन किया और विश्राम किया। एक बार श्रीहरि ने कीर्तनकार संतों को पुष्पहार बांटे; किंतु माधवदास स्वामी को हार नहीं मिला। भक्तवत्सल श्रीहरि ने पुनः लौटकर माधवदास स्वामी का नाम पुकारा और अपने गले का अंतिम अनमोल हार उन्हें पहनाकर परम कृपा बरसाई।

Kushalkunwarba’s Prayer in Dharampur, Madhavdas Swami’s Swift Messenger Service, and Shreehari’s Inscrutable Lila
In Samvat 1872, following the Kartiki festival at Vadtal, Bhagwan Shreehari graced the royal palace of Dharampur upon the loving invitation of Queen Kushalkunwarba, accompanied by a small retinue of sadhus and devotees. One day, while offering devoted service, Queen Kushalkunwarba submitted with folded hands: “O Lord! Kindly summon all the saintly mandals scattered across Satsang to Dharampur, so that we may obtain the divine fortune of their holy darshan and worship their lotus feet!”
Shreehari looked toward the assembly and explained: “Revered Queen! Our sadhus are touring far-flung territories—Kutch, Kathiawad, Dandhavya, Halar, Sorath, and Khandesh; how could they possibly assemble here on such short notice?” Kushalkunwarba pleaded with deep faith: “O Supreme Lord! Every living being in the entire cosmos moves by Your divine decree; when You shower Your grace, what is impossible?” Shreehari addressed the assembly: “Is there anyone here prepared to undertake the arduous task of summoning the ascetics from across distant provinces?” Jeram Brahmachari offered: “Maharaj! Shall I go?” Shreehari replied: “Your primary duty is cooking and service here; if some other zealous saint steps forward, it can be accomplished.”
Hearing this, the newly initiated Madhavdas Swami rose from the assembly, offered prostrations (dandvat pranam) at Shreeji Maharaj’s lotus feet, and prayed: “O Lord! If it pleases You, I shall go and summon all the saintly groups!” Delighted, Shreehari pressed His sanctified footprints (charanarvind) upon Madhavdas Swami’s chest and placed His divine hand upon his head. Infused with supernatural vitality through the Lord’s holy feet, Madhavdas Swami set off at lightning speed.
Astonishingly, early the next morning while Shreehari was presiding over the royal assembly, Madhavdas Swami stood before Him, announcing: “Maharaj! The saintly mandals from various regions are approaching the outskirts of Dharampur!” Hearing this, the Kathi chieftains chuckled skeptically, remarking: “In such a short time, one could barely reach Surat! The Swami must have returned halfway from the road!” Shreeji Maharaj smiled gently and revealed to Naja Jogiya: “Listen, Naja Jogiya! In the Treta Yuga, by Lord Ramachandra’s command, Hanumanji delivered the divine message to eighteen padma vanaras in a single day. Worldly souls easily appreciate the glory of historical avatars, yet fail to comprehend the unfathomable glory of God manifesting in person and the divine potency of His dedicated saints!” True to His words, the very next morning vast columns of ascetic mandals marched into Dharampur and prostrated before Shreehari. Beholding this miracle, all the royal courtiers stood humbled by Madhavdas Swami’s spiritual elevation.
Later, in Samvat 1881 after the grand murti-pratishtha of Vadtal Mandir, when Shreehari was journeying toward Surat, Sadguru Muktanand Swami expressed a desire to have all the sadhus accompany them. Shreehari once again dispatched Madhavdas Swami with His charanarvind: “Vadtal chhe sant pachaas, moklo tahaan Madhavdas..! Beeja jyaan hoy tyaany seedhaave, saune tedine Surat aave..! Gaya Amod Shri Maharaj, tyaan to aavi malyo te samaaj..!” By the time Shreehari arrived at Dinanath Bhatt’s residence in Amod, Madhavdas Swami had assembled the entire holy congregation there!
During Samvat 1882-83, when Gomti Lake in Vadtal was being excavated, Madhavdas Swami resided in a modest hut on its bank. Shreehari often visited that hut to dine and rest. On one occasion, when Shreehari was distributing flower garlands to singing ascetics, none remained when He reached Madhavdas Swami. Sensing His devotee’s silent devotion, Shreehari turned back, called Madhavdas Swami by name, and removed the final sanctified garland from His own neck to drape it around the Swami, showering supreme grace upon him.
