The Mandal of Twenty Sadhus in Vaso, the Opposition of Mukhi Kasiyaji, and Tulsibhai’s Fearless Defense of the Saints

At one time, an itinerant assembly of twenty renounced sadhus belonging to the Swaminarayan Sampradaya arrived in the village of Vaso in Charotar during their spiritual tour. The ascetics strictly maintained the discipline of partaking of food only once a day through alms (bhikshavritti), devoting the remainder of their time to meditation, bhajan, and preaching. Someone poisoned the mind of the influential village chieftain, Mukhi Kasiyaji, claiming that “Swaminarayan mundiyas (shaven-headed monks)” had entered the village. Agitated, Kasiyaji ordered his police guards: “Drive them out of the village immediately!”

A village constable approached the sadhus and commanded sternly: “Hurry up with your begging and clear out of this village at once!” Hearing this, one of the sadhus enquired with serene gentleness: “Brother! Various other bawas, fakirs, and wandering mendicants beg freely in this village; what fault have we committed that you forbid only us?” Beholding the unblemished saintliness and tranquil countenance of the ascetics, the constable’s heart softened. He reflected: ‘These are genuine men of God, not charlatans! Even if I lose my employment or salary, I will never cause distress to such exalted saints!’ He hurried back to Mukhi Kasiyaji’s mansion and argued: “Bapu! When all sorts of mendicants beg in our village, what harm have these Swaminarayan sadhus done that they should be expelled?” Hearing the guard’s earnest appeal, Kasiyaji relented: “Very well, let them beg; return to your post.”

The following morning, the sadhus walked down the street for bhiksha and paused before the prominent multi-storied residence (medi) of Tulsibhai, calling out melodiously: “Narayan Hare… Sachchidanand Prabho..!” At that moment, Tulsibhai had just finished his bath and was seated for the daily worship of his Thakorji. As the sacred chant resonated, a brilliant divine radiance suddenly illuminated his prayer room! Startled by this auspicious sign, Tulsibhai asked his attendant: “Who called out ‘Narayan Hare’?” The servant replied, “Bapu! Some ascetics are standing below seeking alms.” Tulsibhai commanded, “Bring them upstairs with utmost respect!” The sadhus ascended to the upper chambers. Tulsibhai enquired: “O holy sages! Who are you and how many are in your group?” The sadhus answered: “We are disciples of Bhagwan Shree Swaminarayan. We beg alms only once a day, and there are twenty of us in this mandal.”

The moment Tulsibhai beheld the sacred gathering of saints, all worldly anxieties vanished from his mind, replaced by sublime spiritual peace. He immediately hired a pious Brahmin cook to prepare a sumptuous feast for all twenty ascetics. Meanwhile, Mukhi Kasiyaji sent his servant to check on the whereabouts of the sadhus. The servant returned and reported: “Bapu! All those sadhus are gathered at Tulsibhai’s residence, singing sweet kirtans!” Burning with spite, Kasiyaji dispatched his servant with a warning: “Tell Tulsibhai to dismiss those monks immediately!” The messenger arrived and delivered the dictate: “Mukhi Kasiyaji commands that you expel these sadhus from your home at once!”

Hearing this insult, Tulsibhai erupted in righteous fury like a roaring lion: “Go back and tell Kasiyaji that these Swaminarayan saints are my very head! If the elder has an ache in his stomach over this, let him come up here and face me personally!” Stunned by Tulsibhai’s fearless resolve and unconditional allegiance to the holy saints, Mukhi Kasiyaji backed down completely, telling his men: “Say nothing more to them; do not obstruct the sadhus. We want no quarrel with Tulsibhai.”

Thus, Tulsibhai courageously championed the cause of the righteous, served the twenty sadhus with boundless affection, and earned the everlasting pleasure and grace of the saintly assembly.
