Kantola Feast in Gadhada, Liberation of the Owls, and the Gift of Touchstones from the Tree Hollow
Once, Shreeji Maharaj visited the serene groves of Radhavadi in Gadhpur, returning to the Darbargadh at twilight to reside in His tent. At that time, a faithful devotee named Ganeshbhakta brought fresh spiny gourds (kantola). Following the evening aarti and dhun, Shreehari personally ordered a cooking vessel, added a generous amount of pure desi ghee, and seasoned a delectable vegetable preparation of kantola. Shreehari then relished this preparation with curd and hot rotlas made of fresh green native millet. After rinsing His mouth, Shreeji Maharaj personally served the delicious kantola prasad to all the assembled ascetics and attendants with His own lotus hands.
Later that evening, an assembly gathered in the courtyard as musician saints sang melodious devotional hymns. Nearby, atop a sacred khijado tree, an owl began to hoot. Hearing the sound, Sadguru Brahmanand Swami jested playfully: “O Maharaj! Behold, this owl too is singing kirtans before You!” Darbar Alaiya Khachar remarked, “Swami, many owls dwell in these ravines, frequently engaging in fierce fights amongst themselves.” As they were speaking, two owls engaged in violent combat, screeching and grappling. Sadguru Sacchidanand Swami remarked, “These owls are unfortunate; if only they fought near Maharaj, the Lord’s divine gaze might fall upon them!”
It was a moonlit night. Locked in battle, both owls fluttered and fell onto a rocky ledge nearby, bleeding profusely. Shreeji Maharaj arose and approached the ledge. The moment Shreehari’s compassionate, nectarine glance rested upon them, both owls peacefully discarded their mortal bodies! Brahmanand Swami marveled: “O Lord! What extraordinary spiritual fortune that these creatures beheld the Supreme Lord Purushottam Narayan face to face at their final departure!”
Shreeji Maharaj revealed the divine mystery: “Swami! In their previous births, these two were mighty monarchs. However, they had derided and mocked holy sages, which karmic consequence consigned them to take birth as owls! Yet during their reigns, they had piously arranged the marriages (kanyadaan) of countless impoverished maidens. By the unfailing spiritual merit of that virtuous charity, they attained Our divine darshan at their end and have been liberated to Akshardham! Furthermore, these owls brought Us a rare offering: if you inspect the hollow of their tree, you will discover precious magnetic touchstones (chamakpaan)!”
The next morning, attendants searched the hollow of the tree and unearthed two brilliant chamakpaan stones, placing them reverently into Shreeji Maharaj’s hands. After completing His morning ablutions and bathing in the holy Ghela river, Shreehari had the sanctified owls ritually cremated by His attendants.
Shortly thereafter, Ganeshbhakta brought fresh wild leafy greens and leaves as an offering. Pleased, Shreeji Maharaj adorned Ganeshbhakta with a fragrant garland of white double-jasmine blossoms. At that moment, Rajba, Laduba, and Jivuba arrived carrying the morning meal. While partaking of the feast, Shreehari narrated the wondrous liberation of the two owls to the three ascetic sisters and displayed the radiant chamakpaan stones, filling their hearts with wonder at His boundless divine grace.
