The Pure Devotion of Khetiyo and Bhimo of Kutch in Gadhpur, the Sanctified Laddoo, and Life Restoration of Janbai
One day, Shreeji Maharaj was gracefully seated upon a cot supported by cushions on the veranda of Motiba’s chambers in Dada Khachar’s Darbargadh in Gadhpur. An extensive spiritual assembly of sadhus, devotees, and personal attendants surrounded Him. Sadguru Premanand Swami (Premsakhi) was singing sweet devotional hymns celebrating the Lord’s divine form.
At that moment, two young boys from Kutch, Khetiyo and Bhimo—the sons of Hamir Bhansali and the devout Janbai—entered the assembly for Shreehari’s darshan. According to their daily habit, both boys offered prostrations (dandvat pranam) and stood before Him. Shreehari playfully enquired of Bhimo: “Bhima! Are you crazy, or is your brother Khetiyo crazy?” Bhimo instantly answered, “Maharaj! Khetiyo is crazy, while I am wise!” Maharaj then asked Khetiyo: “Kheta! Are you wise, or is Bhimo wise?” Khetiyo retorted, “Maharaj! I am wise, and Bhimo is crazy!” Hearing their innocent childhood responses, Shreehari and the entire assembly erupted in joyous laughter.
A little later, Sadguru Muktanand Swami submitted with folded hands: “O Maharaj! You are the Sovereign Lord of infinite cosmic realms, yet You lovingly summon these simple, unlettered children; what immense past merits could they have accumulated to receive such divine affection?” Shreeji Maharaj unveiled the truth: “Swami! In their past lives, they had performed tamasic karmas that would have consigned them to take birth as trees; however, they once rendered selfless service to an exalted Satpurush. Delighted by their service, that saint showered profound blessings upon them. By virtue of that saintly grace, both were granted this auspicious human birth in Satsang! Now, both brothers will serve the mandir, the deities, and the sadhus and devotees, and ultimately ascend to Our eternal abode of Akshardham!”
One afternoon, Shreehari was personally serving delicious laddoos from a large platter to the row of seated ascetics in the Darbargadh. Khetiyo and Bhimo were watching the divine scene from a short distance. Shreehari walked over and placed a laddoo directly into each boy’s hands with His own lotus hands. As Shreehari turned back to the serving line, the laddoo slipped from Bhimo’s small hands into the dust! Khetiyo immediately instructed him: “Bhima! Pick up that laddoo immediately, even if it has gathered dust! It is consecrated prasad from Maharaj’s own divine hands; even with dust, whose divine touch does it bear? Pick it up and eat it joyfully; there is not the slightest fault in partaking of it!” Hearing the boy’s profound understanding of divine glory, Shreehari was exceedingly delighted.
Sometime later, their mother Janbai fell critically ill and reached her final moments. Bhimo ran breathless to the Darbargadh, crying, “Maharaj! My mother is departing from this world; please come give her darshan!” Shreehari slipped into His wooden sandals (chakhdi) and hastened toward their home. On the road, a cynical village woman scoffed: “Janbai has already breathed her last; why are You running there as if You can breathe life back into a corpse?” Shreehari replied solemnly: “Besides Us, is there anyone in this universe who possesses the power to bestow life and breath?” Reaching Janbai’s bedside, Shreehari called out her name twice. Astonishing all onlookers, the lifeless Janbai opened her eyes, revived, and sat up! Shreehari blessed Janbai with ten additional years of earthly life, and at the end of that period, personally escorted her to Akshardham.
Acharya Shree Viharilalji Maharaj commemorated this blessed family in the holy scripture Shree Harililamrut: “Haribhakta Hamir Bhansali, Janbai priya dharmavali..! Bhala bhakta Bhimo ane Kheto, bey putra ena kahya e to..!!”
