Sadguru Gopalanand Swami’s Forgiveness upon Ravji Koli of Kundani, True Repentance, and the Boon of a Son
In the Jasdan taluka of the Panchal region lies a modest village named Kundani. One evening, a poor farmer named Ravji Koli returned home from his agricultural labour with his dilapidated bullock cart and lean oxen. As soon as he arrived, his wife greeted him with news: “Listen! Holy Swaminarayan ascetics have arrived at our village temple today. Among them is the very saint who was once struck unconscious by a stone thrown from your hand! Go to the temple, seek his forgiveness, and beg for his blessings so that our past sins may be eradicated and our hardship removed!”
The memory of that unfortunate incident flashed vividly before Ravji’s mind. Years earlier, during a heated dispute with a local merchant, Ravji had hurled a stone in anger; the stone accidentally struck Sadguru Gopalanand Swami as he passed by, causing the great saint to collapse unconscious! True to the tenets of the Shikshapatri, which commands ascetics never to harbor ill-will even toward those who abuse or strike them, Swami had instantly forgiven Ravji without a trace of resentment. Overwhelmed by remorse, Ravji had embraced the Swaminarayan faith.
Ravji rushed to the temple and fell prostrate in humble dandvat pranam at Sadguru Gopalanand Swami’s holy feet. Recognizing him instantly, Swami enquired with tender affection, “Well, Ravji Bhagat! Are you well and at peace?” Folding his hands, Ravji wept, “Swami! I am that same unfortunate Ravji. How can a worldly creature who struck an exalted saint ever be truly at peace!”
Swami asked gently, “Ravji Bhagat, are you happy?” Hearing Swami’s compassionate tone, tears poured from Ravji’s eyes like torrential monsoon rain, leaving him choked and speechless. The merciful Gopalanand Swami consoled him: “Ravji Bhagat! Whatever sorrow burdens your heart, speak without hesitation. We sadhus shall pray to Shreeji Maharaj and dispel your misery!”
Encouraged by Swami’s boundless compassion, Ravji confessed, “Swami! Years ago, my hand hurled that stone which injured you in the village bazaar…” Swami smiled warmly and remarked, “Yes, we remember that well! But we are sadhus; forgiveness is our intrinsic spiritual duty. In the Shikshapatri, Shreehari has commanded that even if someone strikes us, we must never wish ill upon them. Moreover, in exchange for that stone, we gained a sincere devotee like you, which brings us immense joy!”
Ravji wept bitterly, “Swami, you are an ocean of saintliness, but the sin of striking an exalted devotee of God has poisoned my existence! Years have passed since my marriage, yet I have no offspring; I remain childless! O merciful master, bless me with a son!”
Moved by Ravji’s heartfelt repentance, Sadguru Gopalanand Swami closed his eyes, meditated upon Bhagwan Swaminarayan, and prayed for the relief of Ravji’s affliction. Opening his eyes, Swami declared: “Ravji Bhagat! Bhagwan Swaminarayan will fulfill your aspiration; go, it is my promise! Shreehari shall bestow all auspiciousness upon you.”
The next day, Swami proceeded on his spiritual itinerancy. Within one year, by the unfailing potency of Swami’s divine boon, a radiant son was born into Ravji Bhagat’s household, filling his home with festive celebration! Two years later, Ravji hitched his bullock cart and brought his wife and child to Gadhpur. After offering devout prayers to Gopinathji Maharaj and visiting the sacred Akshar Ordi, he placed the toddler at Gopalanand Swami’s holy feet: “Swami! By your grace this son was granted; kindly place your blessing hand upon him and bestow his name!”
Gopalanand Swami initiated the child with the sacred vows of Satsang, named him, and imparted spiritual counsel: “Ravji Bhagat! Bhagwan Swaminarayan has fulfilled your desire; now, while carrying out all worldly duties, never forget that Supreme Lord!” Thus, through the sublime forgiveness and divine grace of an enlightened saint, a repentant soul’s sins were dissolved, bestowing eternal spiritual auspiciousness.
