સદ્ગુરુ ગોપાળાનંદ સ્વામીએ બાવાઓને પ્રગટ ભગવાન ભજવાની શીખ આપી અને અધર્મથી રાક્ષસ તથા કાળા નાગ બનેલા મહંતોને ગઢપુર ઘેલા નદીના સ્નાન-દર્શનથી મોક્ષ આપ્યો.
એક વખત સુતાર વલ્લભ નામના પ્રેમી ભક્તે સદ્ગુરુ ગોપાળાનંદ સ્વામીને સંતમંડળ સહિત રામતળાવ પાસે પોતાની વાડીએ ભાવભર્યા ભોજન માટે પધરાવ્યા. ત્યાં બાજુમાં આવેલા ખાખી બાવાઓના અખાડામાંથી દસ-બાર ખાખી બાવાઓ આવીને સ્વામી સમક્ષ બેઠા.
ગોપાળાનંદ સ્વામીએ તેમને પૂછ્યું: “બાવાઓ! તમે કોનું ભજન કરો છો?” બાવાઓએ કહ્યું: “રામ કા, ઔર કૌન કા!” ત્યારે ગોપાળાનંદ સ્વામીએ પ્રેમથી સમજાવતાં કહ્યું: “સાધુરામ! અત્યારે પૃથ્વી પર સાક્ષાત્ પરબ્રહ્મ ભગવાન શ્રીસ્વામિનારાયણ રૂપે પ્રગટ થયા છે. અમે એ પ્રગટ પરમાત્માના સાધુ છીએ. તમે સૌ એ પ્રગટ પ્રભુનું ભજન કરો તો તમારો જન્મ-મરણના ફેરામાંથી સાચો મોક્ષ થાય!”
બાવાઓ અહંકારથી બોલ્યા: “નહીં નહીં સાધુરામ! હમ તો રામ કો છોડકર કિસી ઔર કા ભજન નહીં માનતે. રામ તો દામ ઔર વામ (ધન અને વિલાસ) સબ કુછ દેતે હૈં!” ગોપાળાનંદ સ્વામી હસીને બોલ્યા: “જો દામ અને વામની જ કામના હતી, તો સંસાર છોડીને બાવા શા માટે થયા?” બાવાઓએ કબૂલ્યું: “સંસારમાં બહુ મહેનત કરવી પડે છે છતાં બધું સુખ મળતું નથી; જ્યારે બાવા બનવાથી રામના નામ પર સારો ખોરાક, ધન, બિસ્તર અને માલમિલકત બધું જ સહજ મળે છે!” સ્વામીએ ગંભીરતાથી કહ્યું: “પરંતુ મરણ પછી આવા દંભી જીવનથી ઘોર નરકમાં જવું પડશે!” બાવાઓએ તળાવ કાંઠે ધૂળની સમાધિઓ બતાવી બડાશ મારી: “અમારા અખાડાના પૂર્વ મહંતોનો તો મોક્ષ થઈ ગયો છે, જુઓ આ તેમની સમાધિઓ!” સ્વામીએ ત્રિકાળજ્ઞાનથી કહ્યું: “આમાંથી એકપણ બાવાનો મોક્ષ થયો નથી; કેટલાક યમપુરીમાં સડે છે અને કેટલાક ઝેરી કાળા નાગ બન્યા છે!” બાવાઓએ સ્વામીની વાતને જૂઠી ગણાવી. સ્વામી મંડળ સહિત ભોજન કરી આગળ પધાર્યા.
તે જ રાત્રે બાવાઓના મઠમાં વિશાળ વિકરાળ રાક્ષસો પ્રગટ થયા! તેમણે લોખંડના ચીપિયા મારીને સૂતેલા બાવાઓને જગાડ્યા અને ભયાનક અવાજે કહ્યું: “અમે આ અખાડાના પૂર્વ મહંતો છીએ! જીવનભર પાપકર્મ અને અધર્મ કર્યા તેથી મરીને ભૂત-રાક્ષસ થયા છીએ! તમે અમારો મોક્ષ થયો છે એવું જૂઠું કેમ બોલ્યા? સવારે જઈને પેલા સ્વામિનારાયણ સાધુના ચરણોમાં પડી અમારા મોક્ષની પ્રાર્થના કરો; નહીંતર પેલા પીપળાના પોલાણમાં અમારા જે ત્રણ મહંતો કાળા નાગ બન્યા છે, તે કાલે રાત્રે તમને સૌને ડંખીને મારી નાખશે!”
બીજે દિવસે સવારે ભયભીત થયેલા બાવાઓ દોડતા ગોપાળાનંદ સ્વામી પાસે આવ્યા અને રાત્રિની તમામ ઘટના જણાવી કરગરવા લાગ્યા: “સ્વામી! અમારા પૂર્વ મહંતો રાક્ષસ બન્યા છે, એમનો મોક્ષ કરો; નહીંતર પીપળાના નાગ અમને ડંખી લેશે!” સ્વામીએ કૃપા કરી કહ્યું: “શાંત થાઓ, અમે સર્વનો મોક્ષ કરીશું.” પરંતુ બે બાવાઓ અભિમાનવશ સ્વામી પાસે આવ્યા નહોતા અને ગાંજો પીને સ્વામીની નિંદા કરતા રહ્યા. તે જ રાત્રે પીપળાના નાગે તેમને ડંખ માર્યા અને તેઓ ઝેર ચડતાં બેહોશ થઈ ઢળી પડ્યા.
સવારે બાકીના બાવાઓ તે બંનેને ઊંચકીને સ્વામી પાસે મંદિરે લાવ્યા. દયાળુ ગોપાળાનંદ સ્વામીએ તેમના પર પવિત્ર જળ છાંટ્યું. જળ છંટાતાં જ તે શરીરમાંથી નાગ-રાક્ષસો ધૂણીને બોલ્યા: “હે સ્વામી! અમે જીવનમાં ક્રોધ કરીને લોકોને ડરાવી ધન લૂંટતા, સ્ત્રીઓને સિદ્ધિઓ બતાવી અધર્મ આચરતા; આ ઘોર પાપોથી અમે રાક્ષસ અને સર્પ થયા છીએ. હે સમર્થ સંત! આપ કૃપા કરી અમારો ઉદ્ધાર કરો, અમે આપને શરણે છીએ!”
પરમ કૃપાળુ સદ્ગુરુ ગોપાળાનંદ સ્વામીએ મુક્તિનો માર્ગ બતાવતાં આજ્ઞા કરી: “તમે જેટલા બાવાઓએ અમારા દર્શન કર્યા છે અને ગુણ લીધો છે, તે સર્વે ગઢપુરમાં ઉન્મત્ત ગંગા (ઘેલા નદી) કાંઠે ગુપ્ત રહીને નિત્ય પવિત્ર સ્નાન કરજો. ત્યાં સ્નાન કરવા આવતા બ્રહ્મસ્વરૂપ સંતોના નિત્ય દર્શન કરજો. આ પ્રભાવથી એક વર્ષમાં તમારી રાક્ષસ અને સર્પ યોનિમાંથી મુક્તિ થશે. ત્યારબાદ સત્સંગમાં બે-ત્રણ જન્મ ધરીને તમારા સ્વભાવો ત્યાગી તમે અક્ષરધામના પરમ સુખને પામશો!” આમ સમર્થ સદ્ગુરુની પરમ દયાથી અધર્મી જીવોનો પણ ઉદ્ધાર થયો.

एक समय सुतार वल्लभ नामक निष्ठावान भक्त ने सद्गुरु गोपालानंद स्वामी को संत मंडल सहित रामतालाब के निकट अपने खेत में भावपूर्ण भोजन हेतु आमंत्रित किया। वहां पास ही स्थित खाकी बावाओं के अखाड़े से दस-बारह खाकी बावा आकर स्वामी के सम्मुख बैठ गए।
गोपालानंद स्वामी ने उनसे पूछा: “बावाजी! आप किसका भजन करते हैं?” बावा बोले: “राम का, और किसका!” तब गोपालानंद स्वामी ने स्नेहपूर्वक समझाया: “साधुराम! इस समय संपूर्ण पृथ्वी पर साक्षात परब्रह्म भगवान श्रीस्वामीनारायण रूप में प्रकट हुए हैं। हम उन्हीं प्रकट परमात्मा के साधु हैं। आप सब उन प्रकट प्रभु का भजन कीजिए, जिससे आपका सच्चा मोक्ष हो!”
बावा अहंकार से बोले: “नहीं नहीं साधुराम! हम तो राम को छोड़कर किसी अन्य का भजन नहीं मानते। राम तो दाम और वाम (धन और सांसारिक सुख) सब कुछ देते हैं!” गोपालानंद स्वामी हंसकर बोले: “यदि दाम और वाम की ही अभिलाषा थी, तो बावा बनकर संसार क्यों छोड़ा?” बावाओं ने स्पष्ट कहा: “संसार में बहुत श्रम करना पड़ता है फिर भी सुख नहीं मिलता; जबकि बावा बनने पर राम के नाम से अच्छा भोजन, धन, बिस्तर और संपत्ति सहज ही मिल जाती है!” स्वामी ने गंभीर होकर कहा: “किंतु देहत्याग के पश्चात ऐसे पाखंडी जीवन से घोर नरक में जाना पड़ेगा!” बावाओं ने तालाब किनारे बनी समाधियां दिखाकर कहा: “हमारे अखाड़े के पूर्व महंतों का तो मोक्ष हो गया है, यह देखिए उनकी समाधियां!” स्वामी ने त्रिकालदर्शी ज्ञान से कहा: “इनमें से एक का भी मोक्ष नहीं हुआ; कुछ यमपुरी की यातनाएं भोग रहे हैं और कुछ विषैले काले नाग बने हैं!” बावाओं ने स्वामी के वचनों को असत्य माना। स्वामी मंडल सहित भोजन कर आगे पधार गए।
उसी रात्रि बावाओं के मठ में विशालकाय विकराल राक्षस प्रकट हुए! उन्होंने लोहे के चिमटे मारकर सोते हुए बावाओं को जगाया और गर्जना की: “हम इसी अखाड़े के पूर्व महंत हैं! जीवनभर पापकर्म और अधर्म करने के कारण हम प्रेत-राक्षस बने हैं! तुमने हमारा मोक्ष हुआ है ऐसा असत्य क्यों कहा? प्रातःकाल जाकर उन स्वामीनारायण साधु के चरणों में गिरकर हमारे मोक्ष की प्रार्थना करो; अन्यथा उस पीपल के वृक्ष के खोखल में हमारे जो तीन महंत काले नाग बनकर रहते हैं, वे कल रात तुम्हें डसकर मार डालेंगे!”
अगले दिन प्रातः भयभीत बावा दौड़ते हुए गोपालानंद स्वामी के पास पहुंचे और क्षमा याचना करते हुए बोले: “स्वामी! हमारे पूर्व महंत राक्षस बने हैं, उनका उद्धार कीजिए; अन्यथा वे नाग हमें मार डालेंगे!” स्वामी ने कहा: “धैर्य रखो, हम सबका कल्याण करेंगे।” किंतु दो बावा अहंकारवश स्वामी के पास नहीं आए थे और गांजा पीकर निंदा कर रहे थे। उसी रात्रि पीपल के नाग ने उन्हें डस लिया और वे अचेत होकर गिर पड़े।
प्रातः अन्य बावा उन्हें उठाकर मंदिर में स्वामी के पास लाए। कृपालु गोपालानंद स्वामी ने उन पर पवित्र जल छिड़का। जल स्पर्श होते ही उन शरीरों से नाग-राक्षस बोल उठे: “हे स्वामी! हमने जीवन में क्रोधवश लोगों को डराकर धन लूटा, स्त्रियों को सिद्धियां दिखाकर अधर्म किया; इन पापों से हम राक्षस और सर्प बने हैं। हे समर्थ संत! हम पर दया कर हमारा उद्धार कीजिए!”
सद्गुरु गोपालानंद स्वामी ने कृपापूर्वक मार्ग बताया: “तुम जितने बावाओं ने हमारे दर्शन किए हैं और श्रद्धा रखी है, वे सभी गढ़पुर में उन्मत्त गंगा (घेला नदी) के तट पर गुप्त रहकर नित्य स्नान करना। वहां स्नान करने आने वाले संतों के नित्य दर्शन करना। एक वर्ष में तुम्हारी इन अधम योनियों से मुक्ति होगी। तत्पश्चात सत्संग में दो-तीन जन्म लेकर, अपने स्वभावों को मिटाकर तुम अक्षरधाम के दिव्य सुख को प्राप्त करोगे!” इस प्रकार समर्थ सद्गुरु की परम अनुकंपा से अधम जीवों का भी परम कल्याण हुआ।

Encounter with Khakhi Bawas at Ramtalav, Gopalanand Swami’s Glory of the Manifest Lord, and Liberation from Serpent and Demon Forms
Once, a loving carpenter devotee named Suthar Vallabh invited Sadguru Gopalanand Swami and his accompanying saintly retinue for a sanctified meal at his agricultural farm near Ramtalav. A group of ten to twelve Khakhi bawas (ascetics) from a neighboring monastery (akhada) came and sat before Swami.
Gopalanand Swami enquired gently, “O bawas, whom do you worship?” The bawas replied, “Ram, who else!” Gopalanand Swami lovingly explained, “Sadhuram! At this very moment, the Supreme Lord Parabrahman has visibly manifested upon this earth as Bhagwan Swaminarayan. We are the sadhus of that manifest Supreme Lord. Worship this visibly manifest Lord, and you shall attain genuine spiritual liberation (moksha) from the cycle of births and deaths!”
The bawas retorted insolently, “No, no, Sadhuram! We refuse to worship anyone except Ram. Ram bestows both wealth (daam) and worldly comforts (vaam)!” Gopalanand Swami smiled and asked, “If your desire was merely for wealth and comforts, why did you renounce household life to become ascetics?” The bawas admitted frankly, “In worldly life one must labour hard, yet happiness remains elusive; as ascetics in the name of Ram, delicious meals, wealth, comfortable bedding, and property come effortlessly!” Swami cautioned solemnly, “However, after death, such hypocritical life leads directly to the depths of hell!” The bawas pointed proudly to dirt mounds on the lake shore: “The previous mahants of our akhada have already attained liberation; behold their sacred samadhi shrines!” Through his divine vision, Gopalanand Swami revealed, “Not a single one among them has attained liberation; some suffer in Yamapuri and several have become venomous black serpents!” Dismissing Swami’s words as false, the bawas departed. Swami finished his sanctified meal and proceeded onward.
That very night, monstrous, terrifying demons (rakshasas) manifested inside the bawas’ hermitage! Striking the sleeping bawas with heavy iron tongs (chipiye), they roared in fury: “We are the past mahants of this akhada! Because we committed sinful deeds and hypocrisy in life, we have become tormenting spirits and demons! Why did you utter the falsehood that we attained liberation? Tomorrow morning, prostrate at the holy feet of that Swaminarayan sadhu and beg for our salvation; otherwise, the three past mahants who have become black cobras inside the hollow of the pipal tree will bite you to death tomorrow night!”
The next morning, terror-stricken bawas rushed to Gopalanand Swami, recounted the terrifying apparition, and pleaded for mercy: “Swami! Our past masters have become fiends; deliver them, or the cobras will kill us!” Gopalanand Swami consoled them, “Be at peace; we shall grant liberation to all.” However, two arrogant bawas had refused to visit Swami, remaining behind smoking hemp and speaking ill of the saints. That night, the cobras struck them, and they collapsed unconscious from lethal venom.
The next morning, the other bawas carried the poisoned victims to Swami at the temple. The compassionate Gopalanand Swami sprinkled sanctified water upon them. Instantly regaining consciousness, the spirits spoke through their bodies: “O Swami! In life we terrorized people in anger to extort wealth and used occult powers to commit sin with women; for those grave sins we became demons and cobras. O mighty saint, have mercy upon us; we surrender unto your holy refuge!”
The supremely compassionate Sadguru Gopalanand Swami bestowed the path of redemption: “All of you bawas who have beheld our darshan and harbored sincere reverence shall dwell invisibly along the banks of the Unmat Ganga (Ghela river) in Gadhpur. Bathe daily in its sanctified waters and behold the holy darshan of the pure sadhus who bathe there. Within one year, you shall be delivered from demonic and serpentine forms. Thereafter, taking two or three virtuous births within Satsang to shed all earthly instincts, you shall attain the supreme eternal bliss of Akshardham!” Thus, through the boundless compassion of the enlightened saint, even sinful fallen souls were elevated to transcendental liberation.
