The Arrogant Patel of Bholad, Desecration of the Sacred Kanthi, Gopalanand Swami’s Warning, and Retribution by Yamadutas
Once, Sadguru Shree Gopalanand Swami graced the village of Bholad in the Bhal region. In that village, an austere, pious Brahmin was narrating sacred scriptural discourses at the home of a wealthy village chief (Patel). The Brahmin devoutly wore the double-stranded tulsi kanthi of Bhagwan Swaminarayan around his neck.
Noticing this, the arrogant Patel threatened the Brahmin narrator, “Gor Maharaj! If you wish to recite sacred discourses in my household, snap that Swaminarayan kanthi of the new faith and cast it away!” The steadfast Brahmin replied fearlessly with resolute conviction, “Mukhibapa! This sacred kanthi of my Ishtadev Bhagwan Swaminarayan is dearer to me than my very life! Even if my head were severed from my shoulders, I would never break the sacred garland of my Lord!” Enraged by this defiance, the haughty Patel retorted, “Then we refuse to have you recite scriptures in our home!” and insolently dismissed the Brahmin on the spot.
Later, a devotee reported this entire episode to Sadguru Gopalanand Swami while the proud Patel was seated directly in the assembly before Swami. The spiritually formidable Gopalanand Swami looked at the Patel and addressed him in a solemn tone: “Patel! A Brahmin narrating sacred scriptures represents Maharshi Vyasji himself! By dishonoring this pious reciter, you have insulted the sacred Vyasapeetha and Sage Vyasji himself! For this grave transgression, a messenger of death (Yamaduta) will come to claim your soul!”
Blinded by pride, the insolent Patel sneered, “If one Yamaduta dares to come, I will beat him to death with my staff!” Swami replied calmly, “Then two Yamadutas shall come!” The arrogant Patel boasted further, “I will slay one, and my brother will slay the other!”
A few days later, the Patel’s destined hour of death arrived. At that time, village women were drawing water at the local pond. From a distance, they beheld two colossal, terrifying Yamadutas striding forward. Horrified by the grim apparitions, their waterpots slipped and shattered, and they screamed in terror before collapsing unconscious.
The fearsome messengers marched straight into the Patel’s residence and thundered, “We have arrived to fetch you! Strike us if you dare!” Beholding the terrifying Yamadutas face to face, all of the Patel’s arrogance evaporated, and he trembled violently in speechless horror. The Yamadutas bound him in their subtle cords and dragged him bodily for nearly two miles (one gau) in plain sight of the entire village! Casting his lifeless corpse at the village boundary, they dragged his soul away to endure the severe torments of Yamapuri.
Thus, insulting a pure devotee of God and disrespecting an enlightened spiritual master leads an arrogant soul to devastating retribution in the realms of Yamaraj.
