Removal of Vanity of Munim Narsiram of Mansa and Gopalanand Swami’s Blessing of Pure Innocence
Narsirambhai, a devoted follower from the village of Mansa, served as the chief accountant (munim) in the prominent mercantile firm of Sheth Hemabhai Hathibhai in Ahmedabad. On one occasion, he traveled to the sacred pilgrimage site of Vadtal to have the divine darshan of Shree Laxminarayan Dev.
Upon arriving in Vadtal, the worldly notion crossed his mind, ‘Here in Vadtal, no one knows me.’ Entertaining this vanity, he adorned himself in extravagant gold-embroidered (zarkasi) garments, tied an elaborate Amdavadi turban on his head, and put on costly jewelry. Accompanied by two personal attendants carrying two large brass platters filled with crystallized rock sugar (sakar), he entered the spiritual assembly, prostrated flat on the ground, and placed one platter before the seat of Acharya Shree Raghuvirji Maharaj while distributing leaf-bowls of sugar among the senior sadgurus.
Observing this ostentation, Sadguru Gopalanand Swami recognized him immediately and enquired, “Who has arrived—is it Narsiram of Mansa?” Narsirambhai folded his hands respectfully, “Yes, Swami, it is I.” Gopalanand Swami smiled warmly and remarked, “Narsiram! When I first renounced my home in my youth, night overtook me on the road and I spent a night at your house. At that time, your venerable elderly mother lovingly cooked and served me khichdi and kadhi; therefore, you are truly like my own nephew!” Hearing this, Narsiram was deeply moved and astonished that the great yogi remembered his humble household with such tender intimacy.
In the evening, after attending the sandhya aarti of Shree Laxminarayan Dev, Narsiram sat on the veranda beside Gopalanand Swami’s seat. Gopalanand Swami looked directly at him and probed, “Narsiram, are you getting married? Why have you donned such extravagant brocade garments and flashy ornaments?” Looking downward in embarrassment, Narsiram murmured, “No, Swami, there is no marriage.” Gopalanand Swami then offered loving yet penetrating spiritual counsel: “Why then have you staged this show of worldly vanity? Such ostentatious display to impress worldly people does not befit a genuine devotee of God!”
Swami’s words pierced straight to Narsiram’s soul. Realizing the profound truth behind the great saint’s admonition, he immediately retired to his quarters, stripped off all flamboyant garments and jewelry, put on simple white clothing, and returned humbly to sit before Gopalanand Swami.
Swami enquired, “Narsiram, why did you change your attire?” Narsiram touched Swami’s feet with moist eyes, “O Swami, solely to attain your divine grace and pleasure!”
Beholding his pure humility and spiritual sincerity, Sadguru Gopalanand Swami bestowed a supreme benediction: “Go, Narsiram! From this moment onward, throughout your entire life, no worldly fault, passion, or Maya shall ever overcome you!” By Swami’s divine word, all inner worldly blemishes were eradicated instantly, leaving his consciousness as pristine as a mirror. Later in life, Narsiram constructed a beautiful mandir in his village of Mansa, dedicated his resources to the Lord, and ascended to Akshardham as an elevated Ekantik devotee.
