The Feast on the Banks of the Ghelo River and the Eggplant Curry in Gadhpur

The construction of the divine temple of Shri Gopinathji Maharaj was progressing in Gadhpur. One day, the gravel-lime (kankari) used in masonry was exhausted. Parshad Nathuji approached Shriji Maharaj, offered prostrations, and submitted, “O Maharaj, the gravel for construction has run out. It is available along the banks of the Ghelo River, so it is necessary to bring it from there!”

Hearing this, Shri Hari exclaimed to everyone, “Come, let us all go!” Immediately, all the revered paramhansas and devotees set out towards the Ghelo River together with the Lord. Shri Hari traveled in a bullock cart. Upon reaching the riverbank near the mounds of limestone gravel, the bullocks were unhitched, and Shri Hari sat comfortably upon the cart frame. Soon, the parshads erected a canopy (boongan) to provide shade for Shri Hari. Shri Hari sat beneath it and commanded all the paramhansas to dig the limestone gravel.

Shri Hari walked around inspecting the area and then returned to sit near the cart. At that moment, Prem-murti Sadguru Satchidanand Swami arrived and offered prostrations to Shri Hari with overwhelming love. Shri Hari asked him, “Satchidanand Swami, how abundant is the eggplant harvest in your vegetable farm?” Swami replied, “Maharaj, I can readily offer two thousand eggplants right now!” Hearing this, Maharaj remarked, “You will provide the eggplants, but what about the flour, ghee, oil, and spices? Who will provide those?”

Naranji Sutar, who was present there, stepped forward and said, “Maharaj, I shall provide as much ghee as required, up to ten maunds!” His brother, Ajaramar, joined in and prayed, “O Maharaj, if You graciously temper and season the curry with Your own hands, I shall supply all the flour, spices, and other ingredients!”

Shriji Maharaj was delighted and had all the cooking provisions brought right there to the riverbank. Placing the eggplants into ten large cauldrons (charu), Maharaj Himself tempered and seasoned the curry in pure ghee with His own sacred hands. Fresh flour batis were prepared and dipped generously in ghee, while fresh curd and milk were brought from the Darbar. First, Shriji Maharaj lovingly sanctified and partook of the meal—relishing the batis, fragrant eggplant curry, and curd. After completing His meal and rinsing His hands and mouth (chalu), Shri Hari bestowed the sanctified remnants (prasad) from His divine plate upon Satchidanand Swami, Naranji Sutar, and Ajaramar.

Seeing this, Shri Hari’s dearest companion, Sadguru Brahmanand Swami, lovingly remarked in good humor with a bright smile, “O Maharaj! What kind of justice is this? We saints are laboring hard to dig out the gravel, yet the sacred prasad is being served to someone else!”

Shri Hari understood Swami’s loving sentiment and chuckled, “He who provides the goods receives the prasad!”

Then, commanding the parshads, Shri Hari had a plate of curry brought from each of the ten large cauldrons. Taking ten batis, He took a single morsel from each plate, thereby sanctifying the entire preparation, and placed the sanctified portions back into each of the ten cauldrons. After performing chalu and having mukhvas, Shriji Maharaj personally served the delicious curry and batis to all the saints and devotees with His own divine lotus hands, affectionately urging each one to eat to their heart’s content.

After everyone had dined, Shri Hari placed His divine lotus feet upon the chests of the devotees, showering them with boundless divine joy and grace. Afterward, Shri Hari rested beneath the canopy’s shade and, in the evening, returned to the Darbar with all the saints and devotees.
