Bhula Bhagat of Jol and the Divine Power of Gopalanand Swami
Bhula Bhagat, a devout Patidar from the village of Jol near Anand in the Charotar region, came to Vadtal for darshan. After having darshan of the sacred prasadi places sanctified by Shriji Maharaj—such as Gnanbag, Gomti lake, and the historic loft (medi) of Joban Bapa—he stayed to receive the darshan and spiritual communion (samagam) of Sadguru Gopalanand Swami. Observing him, Swami asked with wonder, “Bhula Bhagat, is there no mandir in your village?”
Bhula Bhagat folded his hands and humbly replied, “Yes, Swami! Ours is predominantly a Muslim village. The village chieftain (mukhi) is a Muslim, and he does not permit a Swaminarayan mandir to be built in the village.”
Hearing this, Sadguru Gopalanand Swami smiled and said, “Bhagat, what power does that chieftain have to stop a mandir from being built? When the mandir of Purushottam Narayan is being established, who dare obstruct it? Come, I shall accompany you to your village. Go ahead today and prepare bricks, lime, and all necessary materials.”
Sadguru Gopalanand Swami arrived in Jol accompanied by sixty devoted followers and skilled masons. Taking Bhula Bhagat along, Swami set out to select a suitable site for the mandir. Upon inspecting various plots, Swami chose the prime land belonging to the village chieftain (gamdhani) himself and marked out the foundation of the mandir right there.
Trembling with fear, poor Bhula Bhagat said, “Swami, this land belongs directly to the village chieftain!”
Swami smiled gently and replied, “Why should you worry about that? You only need to do as I tell you!” Following Swami’s command, the devotees began excavating the foundation. When news reached the village chieftain, he immediately rushed there with five to seven women from his family to protest and obstruct Swami’s work.
Just as he drew near, a large serpent suddenly emerged, causing everyone to flee in terror. The venomous black cobra bit the chieftain’s daughter; yet, his obstinacy did not waver. A few days later, the chieftain sent his men once again to halt the construction of the mandir.
At that moment, a massive brown serpent appeared. It chased after the chieftain with flared hood and bit his young son. Stricken by the deadly venom, his son lay at the threshold of death. Overwhelmed with grief and remorse, the chieftain finally realized his grave mistake. In utter despair, he came running to Sadguru Gopalanand Swami, fell at his lotus feet, and pleaded, “Swami! I have made a terrible mistake. I obstructed the divine work of God’s mandir, and hence I have received this punishment. You are an all-powerful, divine saint! Please bestow your grace and bring my son back to life!”
Swami told him, “Chieftain, only if you vow never to cause any disruption to the mandir’s construction and legally transfer the deed of this land for the mandir will your son live.” The chieftain immediately executed the written deed of the land in favor of the mandir. As soon as the document was handed over, Swami mercifully restored the boy to life.
Thus, through the divine spiritual prowess of Sadguru Gopalanand Swami, a mandir was erected in a Muslim village on the chieftain’s own land, and a brown serpent was stationed as a celestial guardian to protect the mandir, remaining ever vigilant around its sacred premises.
